Plato's Closet... I have been WAITING to visit! I have been obsessed with thrifting the last few years and Plato's is always a place that is recommended online, just never had the chance to swing by. Bright in Abercrombie lululemon gap and more and all items got the criteria of what they were looking for. Offered me way under value like 5$ for lululemon leggings and when I asked if I could take out stuff from the sell like and only do half of what was in there the owner shoved my clothes at me and told me I was "at the wrong store" I have never written a review but was actually appalled by how rude he was. I've been cleaning out my closet and visited Plato's Closet 3 excact times, since decluttering isn't a one-time process for me. I had some items with tags that I never got around to wearing. On each visit, I brought only 3-5 items at most. I wasn't impressed with the payout, but I figured it was better than nothing. On my 3d visit, I registered as usual and was told to come back in 40 minutes. When I returned, I was informed that they wouldn't accept my items because, according to their system, I visit too often!!! and I should wait two months before bringing more items. I asked to see their policy, but was directed to check their website. However, there is nothing on their website about how often you can sell items. No more Plato s closet for me for sure. read more

I live near this place and have been a few times. I will say, some of the girls are very nice but others are cold and do not address your existence. I have sold here before and this month I sold twice (two weeks back to back). I was told the third time I came in that I have to wait 2 months. They said this has been going on for a bit now. Interesting because no one stopped me when I came in twice in 1 month already. I have been purging my apartment so I brought in 2 bags and they took 10-25% of what I brought. This stuff was gently used with no stains. It included known nice brands and they turned it away. The selection is okay but like others have mentioned, the value they put on used items is crazy sometimes. I walked in and walked out in less than 5 minutes. $63 for used vans sneakers? $28 for a top? This is used clothing right? It's all average brands. I can buy madewell on sale for $25, why would I spend $25 for used madewell? I'll stick with savers. I find these brands every single day for under $10 at savers. Or hell, even poshmark and Mercari! I've bought about $20 pairs of vans to resell for $8 at savers. I sell them for $12 to make a small profit. These people are selling them for new prices. That's makes no sense why anyone would buy it. It doesn't explain why the place was empty. read more

This was my first time at Plato's Closet so I was unsure how the process worked. I was curious to see what I could get for a few name brand purses and clothes, some with tags still attached. The employee at the front offered me $40 for everything. I was surprised by the offer and said no thank you and he immediately became frustrated. He proceeded to ask me what I was expecting, reminded me that it was a thrift shop, and basically said I wasted their time. That of course was not my intention and if I had known, I would not have gone there. Terrible first impression and overall experience. Would not recommend. read more

Heard that Plato's accepted more than Buffalo Exchange. Brought in trending pieces in great condition (omighty, banana republic, kitten heels, Harley Davidson, etc.). They took less than a tenth of what I brought in and only gave me $20 for like 7 items. We're also gonna give me $10 for a brand new with tags piece from Anthropologie.. the tag literally says $160. Would definitely not recommend this location it was a waste of time. read more

The store itself is decently organized and clean. The clothing racks are labeled well and it's relatively easy to find what you are looking for. The prices are reasonable too, but it varies a lot. Though I've only visited a few times, I've always left with at least one article of clothing that I felt was a good find. My current favorite pair of jeans was a Plato find! I've also tried their trade-in system. You need to schedule an appointment in advance and then when you get there, you lay all your clothing into a box for an employee to look through. While they look, you can browse the store. You will get a slight discount for anything you purchase that day as well. I felt like I brought in some really nice clothing/shoes and was disappointed that only a few items were accepted, including ones I was surprised about. However, I respect that the employees are likely looking for very specific items at various times of the year. Overall, the trade-in process is pretty straightforward but definitely don't expect everything you bring in to be accepted! read more

This was my first time at Plato's Closet. Prices were ok, great brands and lots of fashion choices. When you look at videos that say you finds lots of high end items at this store, I was not impressed. Sales staff did not ask me if I needed help! Some prices were on point , others were high! After a much-needed closet clean-out, I visited Plato's Closet with moderate expectations. My sister had recommended it, as my original plan was to donate the clothes I no longer needed. The scheduling technique is ONLINE ONLY and not too mobile friendly. Expect frustrations there especially with very limited time to pick a slot for the day. The check-in process was a bit frustrating too as it took a few tries to get it right, but once that hurdle was cleared, things went smoothly. I received a text indicating it would take about 30 minutes to evaluate my clothes. During this time, I had the option to explore the store or come back after the allotted time. I decided to go wait in my car and from where I was parked, I could see the workers going through each item. Ultimately, they accepted all items with tags and a few lightly worn pieces, which was exactly as I expected. When they were finished, I got another text to come back in. I was informed they would offer $35 for the 11 items they selected. While this was a pleasant surprise, I couldn't help but reflect on the fact that some of those items, particularly the jeans, had originally cost $60 each. Nevertheless, I was grateful for the offer. I decided to keep the cash instead of the items, as my original intention was to donate. I didn't get a chance to browse much, but the store itself was impressively clean and devoid of any thrift store odors. Just moved to area and have NEVER had to book an appointment to sell clothes. When I walked in the management was rude and said I had to come back with an appointment - fine , I didn't know, my fault. I went to book an appointment the next 3 days with no times available -- so i called to ask if i was doing this whole appointment system right or if they were really just that booked and i was pretty much called stupid and illiterate. said i needed to re-read the website (although i had done that before calling to avoid further confusion). "I don't know where you come from but we run our store like this and that's how it is so book an appointment or go somewhere else. it's on the website." i was simply asking if i had the process correct??? I worked in retail - i understand the frustration of silly questions from people, but you don't have to be a jerk about it. Some people simply don't know and like i said before, I just moved here. I have no idea how this works yet so some patience and kindness could go a long way. read more

I would give this store 2.5 stars. It wasn't good but I didn't leave crying. There are a lot of negative reviews and for only being in the store for 2 minutes I could tell the reviews were correct; they are not warm and welcoming. If you're selling, make an appointment on their store website. They got everything back to me in less than 20 minutes. You will be disappointed in the amount you get back. For 8 great items (including lulu lemon joggers worn once) I received $25. I told myself I wasn't going to be disappointed and went in knowing I would be low balled and STILL I was shocked. Can I even buy a shirt for $25 anymore? I don't know. If you're looking to sell and are going to get rid of the clothes anyways, it doesn't hurt to go in and see if they take something for spare change. read more

Extremely overpriced for the condition of the clothing and accessories. You're better off buying brand new items on sale. I've been trying to buy second hand to be less wasteful and more environmental, but this store isn't the place to do that. Bought a belt that literally broke the next day. Add me to the list of yuppies who thought their selling experience wouldn't be as bad as everyone else. I arrived at 2:50 for a 3:00 selling appointment. They told me it would be 35 minutes, and it actually took around 2.5 hours. Everyone working there was 14-16 and they totally mixed up my clothes with someone else's--huge mess, even more time wasted. I really hoped Plato's could be a slightly better selling experience than Buffalo Exchange, but at least at Buffalo they reject you quickly. read more

I brought in a full bag of brand new items, 90% still with tags. 12 brand new items were purchased for $31- got completely ripped off to say the least. The reason for not purchasing all the other items? Pet hair. After looking through the bag of all the things they didn't purchase, there's probably 3 visible pieces of dog hair. So, you'll have a store full of dirty disgusting shoes and ripped clothing but won't purchase brand new items that can be lint rolled for 3 pieces of dog hair? Makes sense. While I stood around the store for an hour waiting for the 15 year olds that were working with zero adult supervision, I got to hear a little insight into the buying process. They picked up one of the dresses and had an open conversation about how it was "too much and too extra" and that "he said after 10 items we shouldn't really do more but all her stuff is new." So, instead of listing on the website that you have a 1 bag limit, you should save everybody some time and say you'll probably only buy 10 items. As another note, you shouldn't have 15 year olds working if they don't understand they shouldn't be saying "fuck" every other word with a store full of customers. Got to listen to one of them tell the other one "fuck you" and to "fuck off because you're pissing me the fuck off." Plato's Closet is a scam. read more

I recently moved here and sold/bought things at my old neighborhood Plato's all the time. Brought in a large collection of barely-worn, good quality things. Was told it would be a 45 minute wait. I didn't mind so much, because I like browsing the racks at Plato's. So I'm looking around the store and was surprised at how worn/in very so-so used condition some of the items were. After browsing for a while, I sat down near the counter and was waiting for my stuff to be sorted. The two women at the counter had a fairly loud conversation about how they weren't taking any my stuff right in front of me (identified to me by the type of container my clothes were in). I mean, of course they didn't realize I was there. But I found this to be pretty rude, and something they should know not to do. Then when they did call me up, I asked them why they weren't taking any of my stuff. I'm not a Plato's newb, so I found their choice surprising. They gave me some lines about how when people are looking to sell very high quality brands, the stuff has to be in *really* excellent condition. This also rubbed me the wrong way, considering that I take really good care of my things as a frequent buyer/seller of secondhand stuff AND many items in the store were not actually in such excellent shape at all. Taking into account the rudeness of the employees, the pretty meh selection of clothes and accessories, and the way this Plato's compares to others I've frequented, I won't be returning. It's a shame that this store will lose good buyers/sellers because of its careless employees. read more

Oh boy, I thought maybe over the years this place would have improved but my oh my was I wrong. I've been in a handful of times to buy some things with zero problem. I'm always courteous to the staff (despite them being unbelievably rude more often than not) and tend to drop a good chunk of change there. I went in last month to sell some things and when I went in, some younger employee and an older one told me that I had been "flagged in the system" and that they "had the right to refuse service to anyone." Now, that is totally fine. I can respect that rule, many businesses are the same. However, I cannot and will not accept being told that I am to "leave the store or the cops will be called" and then not be told why. The only explanation I received was that I allegedly had "spoken to the manager in a rude manner and was threatening and caused a scene". IMMEDIATELY I looked at the woman (who at this point had moved from behind the counter towards me (in an effort to intimidate me I would imagine ?) and told her she had made a mistake. I have NEVER spoken to anyone like that in all the years I've been coming here. She shrugged it off continuously and told me that she "trusts the managers word because he's her son in law". I reiterated that I have never behaved that way and I don't think I've ever even spoken to a man in that store (most of the employees are young women). I even told her that I wasn't even rude when an employee a few years ago basically commented on my weight to my face (I brought in jeans to sell and she looked at me in the face and said "Um we don't sell big sizes like that here." The jeans were a size 7.) Of course when I mentioned THAT incident, she didn't say a word. I finally asked when this supposedly happened and she said august 2020. My jaw hit the floor seeing as how not only had I never done what I was accused of, but I had been in that store a few times since then, have put my number in the system every-time I check out (meaning whoever was checking me out could see my name) and no "red flag" was ever brought to my attention. (Interesting how they had no problem taking my money this whole time but big problems with me when I tried to sell to them.) She also asked if I ever "used a fake name because it also said in the notes that the woman also went by Samantha Clark". Like, what on earth...??? After a lot of back and forth , the woman I spoke to told me that she would "personally" look into it (I was assured her son in law had the "memory of an elephant" so he would remember every detail about the incident) and then claimed she was going to "personally" look at the cameras. Let me tell ya, if Platos saves all their video footage all the way back to august 2020 I will be absolutely shocked. I asked if I could have the managers name and number (barely got his name out of her) and instead she asked for my name and number and told me to "expect a phone call from her tomorrow". Tomorrow came and no phone call. So for the week following I called the store no less than four times looking for her. I asked whoever was working to have her call me immediately. Still waiting on that call. Because I could care less if I could never go to Plato's again, but I will not tolerate being threatened , intimidated, and humiliated in a store (with other customers in it mind you) for something that I did not do. It also begged a lot of questions like was someone using my name? Did someone just make an error in the system? Stuff like that was another reason I wanted this dealt with. I also just don't appreciate having my name dragged through the mud. Long story short, this place is just embarrassing. I generally wouldn't care too much, but you would've thought I had come in and held the place up at gunpoint with how this woman behaved when I first got there. Unbelievable. They should do what every other place on the planet does and scan ID when someone sells there. Don't waste your time here. Don't give them any money. They're condescending and unprofessional and corporates gonna hear it. Better off at Buffalo Exchange. read more

After all of these negative reviews, I thought I'd chime in with a positive one. I've only brought stuff in to sell once, but had a good experience. That said, I primarily come here to shop. Seriously, I find the best shoes at this place and the prices are reasonable. I've never left the store without buying a bag full of goods. I've never had issues with the staff, either. I've found the people working to be friendly and helpful. Perhaps the experience is different as a buyer vs a seller? I was shopping in the store on a Sunday last month (around the time everyone is gearing up for back-to-school) and noticed many people stopping in to drop off clothes to sell. I think it just goes with the territory that you're going to have longer waits on weekends at an extremely busy time of year. Probably best to stop in on a weekday to avoid long wait times, JMHO. read more

They like to pick and choose which items they take which is obviously fine because that's the point of a consignment shop. BUT this specific location is the worst!! They only take like 2 items of clothing even though most of the clothes I brought in if not all were never worn and STILL HAD TAGS ON THEM. Then they want to make up a BS excuse saying some of the clothes I brought in "weren't in season" even though I called and gave the lady a full description of the items I was bringing in before I even made my appointment because I already heard mixed reviews about this location and after bringing in everything I described over the phone they only took a few items... i don't know what type of timing y'all are on but I do not!! Recommend this location!! 0/10!!! I lived in Texas and went to the one out there for yearssss and NEVER EVER experienced such poor customer service. read more

I think it's the worst store I've been to since the way the place is organized and the employees, who are mostly from 14 to 16 years old, look tired and overworked with the things they carry, many say it's just clothes but as the owner I'll take care more to my employees by treating them better and helping them. I wish I could choose 0 stars. I have multiple complaints regarding my experience here. I stopped by one afternoon with a bag full of clothes I wanted to sell. When I approached the counter, two teenagers who seemed to be utterly spaced out were standing there folding clothes and were exceptionally rude, lacking any inkling of interest to greet me or speak with me - the customer! I stood at the counter for what felt like an entire minute before I finally said "Hello?" Yes, they did know I was at the counter the entire time waiting to be helped. They checked me in, took my clothes, and said it would be about an hour for them to sort through my clothes. They have a texting system set up so you receive a text when you are in checked in and when it is complete. You can also check the progress online in which there are four parts to the process (checked in, queued, sorting, complete). So after I checked in I left the store, hung out in Waltham randomly walking around waiting for my clothes to be sorted through. An hour passed. Then an hour and a half. I called Plato's Closet and asked for the status of them sorting my clothes (online it said my order was still being queued... 1.5 hours after check-in). She responded "Oh yes that's done" with a tone that suggested my order had been done for at least an hour now, but yet I had received no text confirmation saying my order was complete. I wasted 1.5 hours of my afternoon wasting around in Waltham while they most likely finished sorting through my clothes in probably 10 minutes. When I returned to the store, again I saw three surly (and possibly high?) teenagers behind the counter who failed to acknowledge my existence while I stood at the counter waiting to be helped. Let me make it clear also that the store was not busy. After again what felt like a dreadful minute of silence, I finally said "hello?" and one of the teenagers finally acknowledged a customer was there. She told me they were unable to take any of my clothing (which they had haphazardly thrown back into my bag) due to wear and my clothes being out of season/style. I wasted nearly two hours of my afternoon with this place to find out in the end they couldn't take any of my clothes. Worst Plato's closet ever, they barely take anything. I brought flannels, jeans , jean jacket and jean shorts and leggings and they said the clothes are out of style; which all are in style. They had the worst selection of stuff in store as well, maybe staff with a better sense of fashion would help. I brought a large shopping bag of excellent condition, in-style, juniors size clothing to sell, and she only said they would take one item, and offered a low ball price of $6. It was brand new with $60 tag. I declined. As I was looking through the store, the items I brought were so much nicer than 90% of what they had! I think this store is going to go out of business soon. They're probably doing poorly, so are not looking to buy more stuff. I've been there previous years and the selection was much better. I would love to support local consignment shops, but have to say don't waste your time. read more

This place is great for selling clothes. Went there for the first time & was so delighted to walk away with $90 when I was just going to donate my stuff. Staff was very friendly & helpful. Selection was pretty good from my quick browse. Prices are also very decent, aside from their new items which are slightly pricier. Definitely reccomend coming here to sell or buy. read more

Drove 30 min to try to sell clothes, no mention on the website that you NEED an appointment to sell. Got there and apparently you do. Next appointment available was for 4 hours later so just had to leave. They only open up same day appointments so you can't schedule in advance. read more

Giving 1 star because 0 isn't an option. First time here employees told me everything was too worn and out of style. Went home to find about $30 of items had been taken out. Had to message the manager and have her review security footage to then be only offered store credit. Second time here just the other day the girl behind the counter looked at 3 out of probably 20 items and returned my entire bag- whatever it's her job to pick what will be profitable. But she didn't even look at everything. It was in the exact order and unfolded as I had put it. She took maybe 30 seconds to return my large bag. Even the gentleman working was shocked she'd come to this conclusion so quickly. She stated it was all too worn and out of style- with an attitude. There was a new with tags $75 fleece lined rain coat at the very bottom among a few other new things and new Guess heels. And after a quick walk around the store there were many items in much worse condition (stained, faded, stretched out) and less expensive brands that were being sold. So glad I didn't bring in the Doc Martens and Timberland boots I'd debated selling. So just know the employees are half heartedly doing their job and probably losing out on possible profit for the store. And if they do take things from you don't be surprised if they offer you an insulting amount or just flat out steal from you. Don't waste your time. You're better off donating and getting the tax slip. Or better yet doing a swap with your friends. Spend a few more dollars and get the same things brand new at TJ.Maxx/Marshalls without the attitude. read more

Came here yesterday with clothes and was told it was a 4 hour wait, we left for lunch and not even a half hour later they were done. I definitely think they were just hoping we would say forget it and leave if it entailed a 4 hour wait. They took some stuff but what really annoyed me were the exceptionally rude and unfriendly staff working there, so obnoxiously full of themselves. I have visited this store a couple of times, but it has been a few years. I've been trying to make an appointment to sell some unneeded clothing for a couple of months. Even though I followed their websites directions, logging on exactly when told to, I was unable to score an appointment for weeks on end! When I finally got in, I noted that their email confirmation said they were accepting spring/summer stuff but their website said sweaters, hoodies, long sleeves, coats...hmm. Glad I double checked! Upon entering the store, about 5 minutes before my appointment time, I was not greeted by the two young women at the counter. In fact, although I hovered there for a few minutes, they did not say a word to me, and seemed to purposefully avoid eye contact. Finally, I got their attention. "Hello!" I said, cheerfully. Stony silence. Then: "Do you have an appointment?" I swear, she seemed disappointed that I did indeed have one! "Okay, it will be 30 minutes, we will text you when we are done." I looked around, sure that I could find something to buy with my earnings from my bags. Since the store was empty and I had an appointment, I assumed she would begin to look at my things right away. NOPE! She looked at me, almost staring me down as in a dare, and turned and walked off. My bags sat on the counter for 25 minutes...while the store remained empty--maybe 1-2 other people came in during the entire time I was in the store. I looked at every possible rack, twice in some cases. Still no progress on my things, the bags just sat there forlorn. I kept checking my phone to see if I possibly missed a text telling me to come to the counter. NOPE! The store smells absolutely terrible, like a combination of sweat and filth and spoiled milk, but mostly sweat and sour milk, and I wasn't finding anything at all that I was interested in purchasing. I was sooooo close to going up and telling them to just keep the clothing, I had to go out side to breathe and it wasn't worth it. But when I approached the counter, they miraculously finally finished up. They took 95% of what I brought in, and I got about the $ I expected so this is not at all a revenge review, but oh my god, I will never step foot in here again. I actually would rather donate my clothing. It is too bad, because the store concept is great and there is no reason why shopping here shouldn't be a totally fun and pleasant experience. To be able to get money back right away for things you were going to donate is a win-win. The funny thing is they took things I didn't think they would take and left things out that I thought they would. This is the first consignment store that has mostly casual clothes etc. No button down shirts, etc. No youth sizes,etc. To the woman who posted she felt discriminated because she is gay and Indian is ridiculous.
