I've seen a lot of reviews bashing PC for its buying regulations but I will say that PC in all areas and states is pretty bad when it comes to buying items. The company is ran very loosely in this regard, and they don't ever do more than a glance at most items. I've both sold with them and bought from them for many years in different parts of the USA, but always struggled to get may of my items approved despite quality branding and usage... this is just expected ‍ One time awhile back in a different state I put a bunch of earrings I didn't want anymore on various earring packaging that I had kept from stores despite them being from all different brands and places, didn't even clean them, but every single one was accepted, so who knows what happens behind that counter... However, while I have consistently seen SHEIN and other fast fashion brands overrun thrift stores, I'm happy to say that I typically only see, at most, Walmart branded clothing here. But this is usually very cheap and even the SHEIN clothing they do have is priced low accordingly, so I'm glad they recognize the actual worth of what they accept of those items! I went in today and found a lot of really nice items which is rare for me, I seldom buy clothes in big quantities because it's hard for me to find stuff that works but I'm always trying to pinch my penny's where I can as well! The only sad thing is that the nicer clothing was a bit more on the expensive side, but their selection was pretty good in my opinion for both adults and the youth. A mother in the changing stall next to me was raving to her daughter about how happy she was to find so many jeans that fit her, so I wouldn't discredit her experience! The only complaint I do have is that the employees, as many other reviews have mentioned, are very cold shouldered. I did see a lot of them rushing around to keep the store clean and stay on top of go backs so I respect the hustle! However, both times I interacted with an employee, (I believe it was the same girl both times but I can't remember) at the fitting rooms and at the register, I was spoken to very coldly and curt throughout the interactions. When I checked out I had about $200 worth of items I had found, I usually always look forward to talking to the employees at the register, but the woman who checked me out seemed very annoyed by my presence and being there in general. I tried my best to remove as many hangers as possible before placing my items on the counter, but when a few on the bottom of my basket still had them on and I placed them on the top of my pile that she was going through, she audibly sighed. No conversation was made throughout the entirety of the interaction, despite it being longer due to my purchases. While I thanked her twice for taking the time to fold my clothes and help me with my large purchase, she dismissed me pretty quickly these times as well. As someone who has worked in retail for over 5 years now, I'm very mindful of my presence as a customer and the exhaustion working such a job can have on you. But this should not be an issue when interacting with customers, as that is a core part of working in a retail setting, barely acknowledging customers, is not acceptable. If the employees in a store cannot get behind the fact of providing good service in a service oriented industry, then they are simply not cut out for the job. I'm not saying employees should bend over backwards for customers, because there's only so much we should expect in society regarding quality of work when paying our workers a barely livable wage... but making small talk like, "how has your day been?" Or "did you find everything okay?" Is the bare minimum. If you can't be bothered to look another human in the eyes when speaking to you, even when they're kind and respectful, then you should consider working elsewhere. If you're looking for a quality experience in regard to customer service, don't expect that from this location, as many employees are under-experienced and uninterested in the company. But their selection of items has always been one of my favorite aspects of the location, even if prices can be high sometimes... I would give this zero stars if I could. My sister went here a while back to pick out some new jeans. She asked an employee if she could pay for the jeans and change into them there. They told her that she could and that she could change now and bring up the price tag up to pay for it. The employee at the register was extremely rude to her because of this. I am incredibly disappointed and frankly confused by my recent experience attempting to sell items here. I brought in two full 40-gallon totes of shoes--a substantial volume consisting primarily of running shoes and sneakers. Many of these pairs were brand new, and many others I had purchased from this very location and wore only once or twice, or not at all. As a frequent shopper, I know their standards, and I took the time to individually examine every pair to ensure they met the "good condition/light wear" expectation. I dropped off the totes and didn't even make it three miles down the road before I received a call saying the buy was complete. This was, at most, a 15-20 minute turnaround for two massive totes of shoes. Upon returning, they handed back both totes, stating they would not purchase a single pair, citing "condition" and "wear and tear." This is unacceptable and demonstrates a significant flaw in their evaluation process. My main concerns: * The incredibly short processing time strongly suggests a quick skim rather than a careful evaluation. There is no way two full 40-gallon totes could be properly reviewed in under 20 minutes. * They refused multiple brand-new pairs and at least 5-6 pairs that I purchased directly from Plato's Closet Chesapeake and never wore. If these shoes were in suitable condition for them to buy and sell initially, and their condition has not changed (or they are literally new), why are they now being rejected? This inconsistency suggests their current buying standards are arbitrary or applied unfairly. * Rejecting items that are in impeccable, like-new condition indicates that the staff may be overworked or unwilling to take the time required for a proper assessment. I am left with a car full of high-quality items and a deep sense of frustration. The process felt botched and a waste of my time. More importantly, because of this experience, I no longer trust their buying standards, and I won't be comfortable purchasing anything here again. If their criteria are so inconsistent when buying, I don't know what quality standard they truly uphold for selling. I cannot recommend this location. I would give less than one star if I could just by looking at the photos below it's clear to see that these shoes are lightly worn. They didn't accept a single pair, not one.!!! read more

I consider myself a consignment guru as I've been selling and purchasing from consignment stores since I was in high school. I will infrequently venture the aisles of Plato's Closet, hoping for a rare find. I am not a tween or teen and will never pretend to be, but you may find the hidden diamond in jeans or workout wear at PC. The store is organized by type of clothing and size with women's dominating the front, men's & late season at the back. Near the registers & fitting rooms, it's chaos. There are bins of clothing stacked everywhere, no discernable lines to check out and cheap knick-knacks they hope you grab while waiting to make a purchase. On weekends, the store is busy and the aisles are tight, so I recommend mid-week shopping. On my visits, the staff (all teens) have been flippant, rude and seemingly couldn't care less about their work. I started working in retail & the service industry at 15 years old and it was ingrained in me that highly-engaging, quality service was a must. You won't get that here, so don't expect it. I will still come in once in a blue moon when I need new jeans or fitness apparel, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation. As for tween/teen clothes, you may find some good deals, but overall it seems really overpriced for low-quality fashion. read more

On our previous visit, there were clothes everywhere on the floor, probably a dozen garbage bags full of clothes looked like they'd exploded behind the register, and all the teen employees were either bickering or on their phones. It was NOT a good experience. HOWEVER, I was here yesterday, and had considerably better service than I did last time. One specific worker is very rude. She does not know how to talk to customers, and she needs to fix her face when she's looking at people.

I was in this store last week and was very uncomfortable. I regularly stop in to sell and buy clothes and usually the staff is super nice and helpful. During my checkout this time, there was an employee behind the counter visibly angry. She was glaring at everyone, staff and customers, and throwing around people's bags and slamming things down on the counter. Ehh. Not planning to return to buy or sell. My first visit was to sell unwanted clothing I had low expectations as I'm not very hip or in the young/teen demographic. The staff doesn't try to explain the process and makes no effort to offer info despite knowing you are a first time seller. If selling -no plastic bags are allowed! Do not bring your items in a plastic bag. Handwritten signs in the door say NO plastic bags. You must bring your items in a reusable bag or tote due to bags breaking and items being lost (not because they love the environment). Sellers can purchase a reusable bag or tote. Most similar stores have a tote system in place and don't force you to buy an item you don't need. Be prepared to leave with exactly what you are trying to sell as they want current young styles. Lightly worn of course. No stains or rips. They pay cash but not a great deal for items purchased based on what' other reviewers said. If you do not pick up your items by closing time they will force you to take a store credit and not cash according to paper you sign before drop off. Again. Not one explains the policy. I was told I was signing off on allowing them to look at my items. If a seller fails to come back in 48 hours they will donate or trash your items. The store is well organized by size and item. Prices seemed decent and older stock is clearanced to make room for newer items. They sell shoe and purses. Signage could be better showing customers where men vs women's are located. My favorite thing about Platos Closet is that it gives people the opportunity to bring in their clothes and shoes and other items for money. Its a quick way to get rid of your items that you no longer want in exchange for a few bucks. You need to bring in your clothes in a container, laundry bin, or luggage and they then will sort through it and determine which items they would like pay you for. It took about 30 minutes for them to sort through my items. In the meanwhile while they were sorting - I walked around the store. Its a variety of gently used items that are definitely worth purchasing. Once the workers were finished going through my items - they gave me an explanation for why they did not choose some of the items - which I loved ! I made exactly $40.55 from the items that they did decide to keep. Good bargain deal! FYI - they are currently in need of tanks, tees, denim and summer wear. They do not accept items that are older than 12 months or stained, heavily worn items. Also, less crowded days to bring in your items is usually the week days read more

Trying to sell here is not fun. They'll take like one or two items, say everything else is "out of style" and then proceed to offer like $5. I've heard lots of complaints from people about them hardly taking anything and I can say that still stands. One aspect I do like is their bag selection. They have tons of bags, more than any Plato's I've been to. Haven't really bought much from here because ironic enough, everything on their racks is cheap or just not appealing to me. Don't pay full retail! What I love about Plato's is its organization. They have guy stuff on the left and lady stuff on the right. Everything is organized by size of course, but they take the added step of categorizing them by short and long-sleeve shirts AND they arrange them by color. I've never seen any other place do the latter. Join their "rewards" program, save your points and earn %-off coupons to use for larger purchases. They buy gently used clothing as well, but don't expect to get a lot for your stuff. Worth a look. read more

Do not even waste your time. They didn't even go through my stuff. I watched the girl empty the bag into a dirty black bin to be returned to me. IThere was lululemon and other name brand stuff that I have now sold on Poshmark for over $150. I looked around and they look grossly over full with out of season, over priced stuff. I recommend going to Encore down the road. You'll at least get a few bucks and they have better stuff to buy. read more

I always bring in name brand clothing and they always tell me my items are "not current" or don't sell but yet find the same things I'm selling on their clothing racks. Great for buying, bad for selling They are bad for selling because they are picky with what they take and they spend 30-40 minutes going through everything. (You don't have to wait they let you know when they are done). So you end up getting back some clothes to take to goodwill or whatever. Waste of time. Took my clothes to Plato's Closet for the first time in over 10 years because I could really use the extra cash for the holidays. We decided to go right when they opened and let me tell you... we weren't the only ones who had this idea. The SECOND they opened there were already 4 people in line wanting to sell their clothes. I was first up, and once they looked at my ID and got my phone number, I was off to look around the store. Here's the thing, their store is PACKED with clothes, and for the 15 minutes I was there, the only other people who were looking around were others waiting while their clothes were being inspected. To me, it looked like they have a TON of merchandise with no one *actually* wanting to buy anything in the store. Overall, they took 5 items for $14 dollars. Amazing? No. But the fact they were otherwise going to be donated? It's a quick way to make a few bucks. Because let's face it, I don't want to take the time to list each item individually online. Before they gave me the cash, they let me know that they're currently looking for outerwear and athletic shoes. I'm sure if you call the store ahead of time, they'll let you know what they're currently buying and you can adjust your pile to sell accordingly. They also took all of my husband's items, so do with that information what you will. read more

Out of about 300 pieces of clothing/shoes (good quality/ name brand stuff the same exact stuff they had on the racks and selling) they took 4 items and one of them was a plain grey fruit of the loom T-shirt. If you want to spend more then you would at the goodwill with the frustrations of being at the DMV this is the spot for you!! read more

Went to this location recently just to sell clothes. I typically don't shop at Plato's because they always seemed overpriced when I know the amount they are buying my clothes for. This location is medium sized but it is filled with racks upon racks of clothing and such. When I went in the employees were kind, but were more interested in taking amongst themselves than focusing on the customers. They said my wait would be about 20 minutes and it was that or a little less. They bought about 13 of my items to include shoes. Wouldn't buy many items that were nice, semi-new, and clean but had MANY disgustingly stained and ripped items for sale. The Chesapeake location is such a rip off! I just did the litmus test I turned in a lamb skin leather Bebe purse and a Victoria's Secret winter coat from last season. I walked out with $16.00 lol.... Is this real life???? The only reason THIS store is getting 2 stars is because the cashier was friendly even though I got some stiffed and I have a little more space in my closet. Super long wait and disappointed with the cashier who was taking clothes. A customer came in and pushed me away from the counter with her purse and I told the customer I wasn't done yet and the cashier did nothing but just watch. I told the customer I hadn't finished and the cashier was in the middle of talking to me and the lady cut me and started handing her clothes in when I wasn't done. It's sad that the cashier didn't speak up and watched/allowed the customer to treat another customer like garbage. Now I get to wait 1+ hours for about 8 items of clothing on a MONDAY. I'd expect this wait on a Saturday or Sunday, but not a Monday! Ridiculous. read more

Do not go there. the employee with curly black hair just stared at me like I didn't belong there When i came in to drop off some clothes. She saidbit would be 45 minutes. so I walked to chipotle and ate and ate and when I came back she said I was supposed to give her my ID. she said she said that, but no she didn't. So I get a text an hour later saying "come pick up your items and payment." so when I show up, the boy working beside her said I had to get in this long line. I shopped at Plato's Closet back when they were still on Greenbrier Pkwy. The store itself was organized and mostly neat. The staff members seemed nice. There was lots of inventory ranging from inexpensive to expensive. They even have a loyalty program via a hole punch card they give you at checkout. I knocked off two stars because at the time of my visit, I was visibly pregnant and they didn't have the greatest selection of maternity clothes and I have long feet and I was disappointed they didn't really have a good selection of shoes in my size. Bad parts aside, I'd still shop here if I lived in the area as I love shopping thrift/consignment stores and supporting the local economy. read more

Unless you are selling them an item of clothing that you quite literally JUST bought and a day later want to sell, you are SOL. I tried selling them some 5-inch heels I used to wear in my single days when I'd go bar hopping and clubbing. They were worn maybe once or twice and were still within fashion, and after an hour of waiting, they didn't buy ANY of the 20 pairs I brought in. Then the sales rep told me these were "old".
