At my first class, the instructor reviewed the basic punches with me and helped me to wrap my hands. I had to ask another time how to wrap my hands again but it was fine- the instructors are all super nice. Recently I had a question about a technique and I felt comfortable asking as well. I try to learn a little from each class and each instructor switches it up so you are not repeating the same exercises over and over. The general format is 15 min HIIT warmup, 15 min boxing, 15 min abs. It goes by quickly. The instructors come around and see how you are doing. There are plenty of lockers and punching bags so space has not been an issue. There are two showers in the women's locker room but I haven't taken an early AM class so I can't speak to whether or not they are typically in use. This gym has become a regular part of my routine. It does not have a close knit feeling- the classes are large and I could probably come and go each day without anyone knowing my name but all the staff are very approachable, friendly, and provide great workouts.

I cannot believe it myself. This place is amazing. The most important thing you need to know is…read morethis: the people, both staff and students are what makes this place the life changing community that it is. I am NOT A GYM person. However, I was hooked to kickboxing and boxing the minute I finished the first class. Sure, I was sore like nobody's business and in places where nobody has business being sore. But let me tell you, you will want more. You will come back and you will ask for more of that pain that feels so good. Trust me. My heart has never beat so fast, nor hard and I have not sweat this much at Bikram yoga. I seriously had an adrenaline rush and a bit of an urge to lay down on the floor for a breather....um, you know, a rest. I wish they had a pool or hot tub because that would ensure that I would never leave (That and obviously work and stuff). The trainers are positive motivators who are passionate about perseverance in fitness and give you personal attention. (Kick Ass, SeaBass) Nothing beats punching out your aggression, getting a great, total body workout all while improving your life.

The trainers seriously love what they do and the owner, Michael, takes the time to make sure you are hitting the bag correctly so that you do not get injured. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. When I had a problem with my wraps, Michael took the time to figure out what worked best for me so that I was comfortable. You can take as many classes as you want and they have great times. I was taking 2 classes in the morning before work because they open early enough to accommodate the early risers. If you want a class that will get you into shape if you take it seriously and push yourself, this is the class.

Your first class will be tough -- the warmup is probably the hardest part. But over time, after taking more classes, you'll find that you can actually make it through the whole warmup without taking breaks! That's always been a point of pride for me. But this was years ago. I am no longer as athletic as I once was! So coming to this Title was scary, lol. Took the 8:15 class, and we had maybe 5-6 people in it. The trainer was able to pay attention to ALL of us. He corrected my form and motivated me when he saw me slack off (hehe). I felt a little out of place coming at first, especially since it can definitely be intimidating seeing people with boxing gloves looking all intense, but turns out a lot of the folks are actually not frequent boxers or totally new too. One girl next to me -- who looked like she KNEW what she was doing -- was also brand new trying it out on ClassPass. Turns out it was her first time! There are two locker rooms -- one for men, one for women -- and there are actual lockers where you can put your stuff. No locks on the lockers, but I'm sure you can either bring one or just go without since you can visibly see the lockers in front of you. Clean facility, motivating instructors, solid workout!

They have a variety of weights, and you get your own bench with an alcove for the boxing gloves. I'm obsessed with how nice the facility is. I've taken two classes with Ally and I'm obsessed with her. The staff working are super kind and helpful. The studio is very clean, has lots of amenities like towels and a nice water filler, and it's huge with lots of space to hang out. They have cute and relatively affordable merch compared to other boutique fitness studios. I love it because everyone does their own thing and is focused on themselves. The girls lift heavy here, which is inspiring! It's a good mix of genders and personalities attending class, which is kind of nice coming from a spin class/pilates background. I mainly focus on mid-weight lifting and stretching, not a big cardio head. Having an open studio space is a plus too. Mid-city fulfills most of these criteria. The gym is location at a great location, albeit a bit busy due to tourists. The underground and dark nature will be a pro or con depending on the person; I find it nice as it mentally isolates one into the "gym mindset" without external distractions. Plenty of squat, deadlift, and bench press spots, and the typical strength training machines that other NYSC/Crunch gyms would have. NO studio space with is a downside for me, but otherwise is perfect for the price. They run constant promotions so don't be afraid to ask or go on instagram! I joined JKD and was immediately hooked. Their approach to self-defense is always practical and Chris seems to always be thinking "does this really work", which was extremely important to me. I didn't want to join a gym that only does forms and light drills as this typically does not apply to real world scenarios. In NYC, even if you are the type of person to never pick a fight, you should be prepared for anything to happen and it is important to be capable of defending yourself. JKD NYC will teach you just that. I feel it is a welcoming place for all ages and has a strong sense of community. Chris truly believes in what he is teaching and will personally dedicate time to every individual student who is dedicated to learning and willing to put the time in. Chris as well as his Senior Instructors are extremely nice and patient, but will always push you to better yourself both in and outside of the gym.
