A woman walked all the way over to ask whether I was looking for the store. When I explained that I wasn't a customer and was simply a neighbor looking for my dog's ball and leaving, she immediately told me that the property was private and my dog needed to be leashed. I was barely on the property and had no intention of staying. While I understand that private property should be respected, the interaction felt unnecessarily unwelcoming. It's disappointing to experience this kind of attitude from a business in your own neighborhood. This definitely left a bad impression. A little kindness goes a long way.

I'm not sure if that was on purpose or he didn't realize, but it was getting a little crowded in the store for me anyway so probably would have been ready to leave regardless. There are lots of plants, and my understanding is that not everything is on display since they're short on space in the main area of the shop. They have a nice collection of orchids, too; I actually considered getting one, but changed my mind. For some reason I think of them as being somewhat... difficult, or needing more attention (whether that's true or not I'm not sure), and I have enough responsibilities with the plants I already own (especially one of my calatheas that's being a bit of a drama queen at the moment!). I may have to try my hand at an orchid sometime, though. The aforementioned shopkeep gave me a huge boost of confidence that I could. In our discussion he mentioned the crucial point that orchids are just plants that flower more often than other botanical houseplants folks might keep, even though many green houseplants may flower under the right conditions. Once an orchid stops flowering, they're still plants without the flowers for you to care for. Food for thought! They also have a shop pet, which was a surprise! I don't like lizards, but luckily this one was in an enclosure. I was a bit startled, though, so be forewarned that the little guy is hanging out in his plexiglass home--he won't hurt you, since you won't be able to touch him, but I as I said, I was surprised! They don't have a huge collection of pots, but the plants all looked lovely and healthy. They have some popular favorites, but it also seemed they had some more unusual and harder to find plants. They have displays for live plant walls for which you can consult with them to install in your home or office, too, if you wish. Parking on this stretch of Damen is touch and go, and it's paid, so plan accordingly.

Darrel in particular went above and beyond. I was looking for flowers and plants for my balcony, and he took the time to walk me through everything: which plants would be safe for my dog (non-toxic was a must!), what would actually thrive given my balcony's sun exposure, and which options would be low-maintenance when it comes to bugs. It honestly felt like a mini plant class, and I left feeling so much more confident about what I was buying. On top of that, I brought in my orchid that I genuinely thought was a goner. Darrel and the team took a look at it that same day and managed to revive it! I was shocked and so grateful. After years of buying plants from the big box stores, I'm never going back. Fertile Garden Center actually cares about helping you succeed with your plants, not just making a sale. Highly recommend, and I'll definitely be coming back. And the speak Spanish!!

The parking situation is questionable. There's street parking in some areas along Western and probably on Grace as well. The large parking lot is for the pizza place next door which maybe won't get mad at you when they're not open? Not sure, but you can live on the wild side! There is a step up to get into the shop so bear that in mind if it's helpful. The shop is small, not overcrowded at all, but doesn't feel empty either. I'm not sure if I'd call it a plant shop or a florist... there's a bit of a difference there. I would say this shop is equal parts both. There are a good selection of plants, not an overwhelming number, and some varying plant accessories (books, pruners, watering cans, etc.). They have some dried flowers, dried bouquets, and various floral accompaniments; they also have an overflowing flower bar where you can create your own bouquet. They'll arrange one for you for an additional price, too. I asked if they have classes or workshops and the woman said they do, which I'll be notified of because I'd signed up for their mailing list. The flowers they had were beautiful and they had some unique ones that will make some beautiful arrangements. I bought a pre-arranged mini bouquet that has brightened my weekend! Oh, and possibly my favorite part of the shop: Percy the pup! (Now I'm wondering, was it Percy or Perry? I think the former.) As I was browsing near the entrance, a small little friend trotted out to greet me and was so friendly. He let me pet him immediately, tail wagging and ready to show me some love. I'm a cat person and don't have any pets at the moment but now I'm thinking, should I get a little puppy AND a cat??
