I wanted to add some interest so that I wouldn't have just rock everywhere, but this south side of the house has no drip line. Perhaps some cacti and other southwestern plants would be appropriate? I made my way down to the local nursery and found this cute potato cactus. Rather than the typical plastic stick with planting instructions, the plastic stick found in the little plant casing said www.coldhardycactus.com. I went to this website to see how to plant and care for this cutie, and lo and behold--an entire cactus website run out of a location right down the road in Lakewood, Colorado! They sell quite a variety of cacti, yucca, agave, all the southwestern plants you might find in a desert environment, carefully studied and developed to be cold hardy for Colorado. I promptly scheduled an in-person tour of the plants, which you can do online. When I arrived, Kelly, a horticulturalist, showed me around the yard and greenhouses and told me about all the plants that he grows. He knows absolutely everything about them, and loves to convey his knowledge about their origination, hybridizations, and ability to withstand our environs in planting zones 4, 5, 6, etc. My house resides in zone 5. Based on Kelly's guidance and my own taste in plants, I walked away with a combination of cacti and succulents; from your traditional spiny cacti to beautiful flowering gentle varieties with smoother paddles. With my brown thumb, and the little 1.5-2" pots, I was wary about their outcome. However, you can see below the pictures that I took in May, 2025. They survived beautifully, and in fact are thriving! I have to admit that the succulents did not make it through the winter. I suspect I did not provide enough water for them after planting, or maybe the site just isn't right, but I couldn't be more happy and proud of the many cacti that are happy in my yard. In one year, some have at least doubled in size! I recently paid Kelly another visit this fall, and purchased some yuccas and agaves this time to fill in some holes in my landscape. I have some pictures below of these babies. I'm excited about the prospect of a southwestern cactus garden in my south yard! If you have want to add a little bit of interest to your yard with an unusual touch, or even just want to create an indoor cactus/succulent arrangement, I highly highly recommend visiting ColdHardyCactus.com. I live in Austin, TX which is nearly perfect for all types of cacti, but we do experience the occasional freeze (like this week ), but these cacti are one less worry I have when protecting all my cold-tender plants. I planted my selections around November and they had plenty of time to root since we stay pretty warm until January. Excited to see what the spring holds for new growth and I'll certainly be adding to my in-ground collections!

Nathan was fantastic, giving me and my friends lots of plant advice, offering to accept photos of other plants at home to help troubleshoot. I took him and Anna up on this - they told me how to save one of my yellowing plants! They're such wonderful people and clearly passionate about what they do. I'll be back for more plants, as well as many of the stylish pots.

Pointed out the low maintenance plants to me, POTTED them for me (wow amazing) and even attached little tags that gave info about each plant. Services include delivery, planting, and a team of plant doctors expert in identification, disease, and pests. The Web site is, unfortunately, very dated and only formatted for a large-screen device. It does not contain a full stock inventory, but only general information. This facility is large, well-stocked and well-organized. There's a very nice parking lot with lots of room. The staff is helpful. I would say, after some comparative shopping, that the prices are generally very high.

We are from out of town visiting and wanted to visit local shops with succulents. We were blown away by Luke's helpful and positive attitude when we walked into his shop. It's clear he knows what he is talking about and very passionate about his craft. I especially appreciated his advice about each plant and how to care for them properly. He took the time to write down names of them and look up on his computer to show us how they would bloom. He also took time to drill holes in our planters for drainage to keep our purchases happy. We will definitely be ordering some of his creations from the midwest. Highly recommend checking out his shop with a great mission. read more

This awesome plant shop just opened in our neighborhood! It is loaded with healthy house plants and very creative plant designs. The plant selection is really great, and so are the choices of containers, some of which the owner makes himself from reclaimed wood. There is so much to look at and learn about in this great store. I have bought several of his living gifts for Christmas this year. All are different and unique. Really want to see this shop stay, it is such a great addition to our area. I am a resident of the Sloan's Lake area, and I have seen this location be a couple of different businesses. I was so happy when I saw this converted to a store I want to shop at! Ever since my first stop at this store, Luke the stores owner has been very friendly and a huge wealth of information as to what types of plants he offers as well as tips to keep them thriving after I take them home. Once upon a time Denver was the world's Carnation Capital and City Floral a major producer of…read moreminiature carnations (and other cut flowers) for the wholesale market. An employee in the mid-1950s had the idea of selling the lower grade flowers to the public. Cheap carnations ($1 a dozen) soon led to lots of foot traffic to the greenhouses which motivated adding additional plants and other retail items. South American competition led to the decline of U.S. cut flower production and City Floral sold the last carnation in 1985, adapting to become a full retail garden center with a landscaping design/build operation. The greenhouses date back to the original cut flower facility built in 1911. This was expanded for retail sales in 1976. The office and warehouse facilities on the west side were added in 1990. This is the oldest remaining greenhouse in Denver. The current facility is packed with every possible goodie for the gardener/landscaper including flowers, fruits, vegetables, plants, trees, shrubs, a huge variety of containers, statuary, tools, and supplies. There's a large succulent section and a good collection of bonsai. Services include tips and education on plant care, pest and disease diagnosis, plant identification, custom container potting, delivery, in-store repotting, plant rentals, an interior design partnership program, and comprehensive landscaping design and construction. I've had the past notion that City Floral was a bit pricy, but I found them very competitive on price in 2026. The products are top quality and the staff is exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. This is a fantastic facility and very convenient for those of us who live in central Denver.
