I was told several years ago by a Plan Member financial advisor that "4% is a great return on your 403b." This is a horrible return. I switched to self-managed and got 12% return on my own. In trying to transfer my 403b to another financial institution, they gave me incorrect forms, incorrect information from their 1-800 number twice, and a dead end/non functioning fax number. This company is despicable. They are a bunch of crooks! They took advantage of me as a single woman with weak financial literacy. I believe they altered my 403b agreement papers, raising my advisor fees to an absolutely excessive rate. For over twelve years, I never received an annual review or routine check-in. The little communication I had was through my own outreach. During this communication, I expressed my concern for the lack of growth in my account and my financial future. I was merely told to contribute more. I have since moved my funds snd filed complaints with FINRA and The SEC. read more

If you scan the other one-star reviews, you'll find that stalling, making up rules, and ignoring customers appears to be PlanMember's regular way of doing business. I inherited my mother's retirement account after her death in June 2023. It's now May of 2024, and PlanMember still hasn't rolled over that money to my inheritance account. They throw up barriers (I need a medallion signature guarantee, but they won't provide info I need to obtain the MSG), they appear to simply disregard correspondences I've sent them (pro tip: their fax doesn't work, and if you say this on the phone, the rep will give you an email to which you can send unencrypted personal data like your SSN), and most horrifyingly, the communication I have had from them is almost entirely people trying to sell me financial products. Like, my dudes: my mom died, I don't want to talk about investing strategies. PlanMember's behavior has had real financial consequences for me, as I've been unable to distribute the tax burden of this inheritance to the full 10 years we have to do so. I will also have to pay maximum tax on an unnecessary minimum annual withdraw, because they continue to stall. I advise you have a lawyer on speed-dial. This institution has been absolutely rotten to me. Run, don't walk, far away from them. read more

This company is THE WORST. It's been over two months since I requested a full distribution. I've had 5 conversations with three different people and they keep throwing the words "compliance department" around and requesting more forms and documents. Do not EVER let them manage your money. I had a small account with PlanMember, only $157. When I tried to close the account in October 2023, I submitted my paperwork through my broker as listed on the PlanMember website. I signed the forms (as can be seen in the email correspondence attachments to my broker), but PlanMember says the forms were not signed. That is inaccurate, and even if they believed it to be the case, they had a fiduciary duty to contact me to resolve any such matters. Presently, the account is worth $0.23 (twenty-three cents), with all of the money going to fees. I have not benefited one penny from this account, but PlanMember has lied and taken every penny, save for $0.23. I have the signed form in my email account so there can be no doubt the form was properly filled out and signed. Also, my broker was excellent, and I had no problems with him.
