After a week in Playa del Carmen and being met with culinary disappointment at every turn, we found Plank. Plank is fine dining in an open air restaurant. The waitress was friendly, upbeat, focused and just perfect. We didn't get appetizers to save room for dessert (the desserts were amazing, btw, you should do this.) I had the beef wellington and curried cauliflower and roasted vegetables as side dishes. The wellington was delicious - the perfect amount of duxelles and dijon. I really enjoyed dining here. The restaurant is beautiful and the food was great. Shortly after being seated you are given a small little welcome cocktail and on the night we went it their Moscow mule. I ordered the salmon which is cooked on a large slate of Himalayan salt and we shared starters of asparagus and portobello mushrooms- we asked for the mixed veggies, but they mixed up our order and the mushrooms looked so good that we decided to keep them. I wanted to order an appetizer, but I'm glad we didn't because they serve complimentary flat bread with three delicious sauces. Glad we came back to Plank again. It's one of my favorite restaurants here and since I just moved here I hope I will be there more often! Service was great, thanks to Diego and Ricardo. Food was delicious ( again my favorite is seared tuna on a salt rock and jumbo shrimps). Smoked meat sampler I heard from my parents were tasty too. Not very impressed with salmon as a main but it is just good simple dish ( which I normally cook at home myself). Mash with lobster was ok ( more lobster please). We visited Playa del Carmen for New Year's Eve and tried to make a reservation at Plank. We went to the website and requested a reservation according to the instructions. We had limited access to email and were only checking messages once each day in the morning. The day after we made the reservation online, we received an email in the afternoon from Christine telling us we must visit the restaurant in person to make the reservation. By the time we were able to get into the restaurant on the third day, Christine had given our reservation to someone else and it was booked solid. We were told we could be given a table at an overflow restaurant a couple of blocks away. No, thank you. So instead we went to Le Chique, a molecular gastronomy restaurant in Quintana Roo, which we highly recommend. I don't care how good the food might be, and I'll never know. Went here for Saturday brunch - highly recommended! We had delicious huevos rancheros and chicken enchiladas. The included breakfast bar and breads were also very good. The menu is very extensive. Service was very friendly. We returned for dinner, and the meal was fantastic. Highly recommend the jumbo shrimp entree and the mushroom+leek flatbread. I wanted to try Plank after seeing it across the street from my balcony and after looking over their menu. It reminded me of places I would eat back in LA. The dish and appetizers I tried: +Lobster Tail 4 grilled baby lobster tails, every bite is like heaven, except maybe that last one because you're so full and satisfied. +Himalayan Scallops mm delish! Perfect balance of flavors and texture, these came wrapped in bacon and served with an apple puree. +Smoked Oyster Rockefeller On the heavier side for appetizers, can't go wrong with oyster rockefeller. +Grilled Asparagus +Grasshopper (drink) I recommend downing your chilled drinks cause this was delicious up until it got all warm due to the heat and humidity. +White Wine (can't remember which) Must've been good cause the two others I was with each pretty much had a bottle for themselves. This was by far the best food we have had in Playa. We have been to this beautiful town twice and PLANK is one of the only places we have been to more than once because it is THAT good. It's down a side street and if it weren't for Trip Advisor we wouldn't have even known it was there. From the second we walked up we were amazed at how perfect everything was. The atmosphere, music, service, decor. Spot on!! The food just takes things to the next level. Free flat bread appetizer starts odd your experience. They brought me carrots since I can't have where. The knowledge of gluten sensitivity (I have celiac) was a plus!! We are here twice. I had the pork belly, shrimp and filet dish. My husband had beef Wellington. We shared asparagus. My husband had apple pie for dessert. I tasted the homemade vanilla ice cream --- oh my. It was heavenly!!!! Portions were VERY plentiful and the food was the best we had while in town. Our second trip we shared the kabobs and mashed potatoes and ended our meal with a espresso martini -- W O W!!! The smoke infused drinks also sounded delish. But we did not have one. Let me start by saying that I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys outstanding food with excellent service. My wife and I, along with two of our friends, recently vacationed in Playa del Carmen and had one of the most amazing dining experiences ever at PLANK. The one word that best describes the entire night, from the food to the service to the venue and overall "vibe" itself is...Wow! What made it even better was that we were able to enjoy this fine-dining experience in an upscale casual setting...perfect for our vacation mindset. We were there for two weeks and dined out for every meal and without a doubt, this is the best restaurant in Playa. I don't know how these folks found such a talented chef, but they did and we were the beneficiaries of his talent. Every dish was creative, beautifully presented and most importantly, delicious. Being from the Dallas/Fort Worth area and frequent visitors to New York and San Francisco, we have learned over the years how to appreciate fine-dining; but we were pleasantly surprised to find such a gem in, of all places, Playa del Carmen Mexico. We started out with the Seafood Sampler which contained Scallops, Oysters Rockefeller, Shrimp and Ahi Tuna (perfectly cooked)...all served on a hot Himalayan Salt Block. Next, we enjoyed the goat cheese and fig flat bread. For our entrees, my wife had the Duck Breast with a maple and pineapple puree (she is still talking about this), our guests chose the 5-course tasting menu which gave them a broad tasting from the menu. And for me, I chose the Beef Wellington which was uniquely presented and extremely delicious (again, perfectly cooked). All of this was accompanied by a side order of the Parmesan Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus. For desert, we split the Desert Sampler which contained chocolate mouse, key lime pie and an apple crumb. We ended up eating there three times. Once for the big meal described above and two other times with just my wife and me for a lighter meal (Cedar Plank Salmon for me and the Duck again for my wife) and once for late night deserts (New York Cheesecake and Warm Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream). The bottom line is, if you are visiting Playa del Carmen, do yourself a favor and spend at least one evening enjoying "the best restaurant in Playa".... I'm confident you will agree...Wow! read more

M and I had an awesome time at Plank. We walked in on a Saturday night and were immediately seated. The host standing at the front desk wasn't pushy at all like some other restaurants on 5th ave. We had a great table outside in the corner. As an app we ordered the assorted dips with flatbread. Dips were great, especially the hummus. For my main I had the mixed grill, and M ordered the smoked sampler. We also ordered parmesan potatoes and grilled vegetables for our sides. All I can say is that is was an awesome meal. All the meat was prepared really well and it was very tasty. We loved the portion size of the grilled vegetables and it was plenty for 2. The potatoes were sliced, and covered in a layer of parmesan cheese. We both expected it to be different but we still liked it. Because we both ordered a mix of different meats it felt as if we were at a bbq party. Staff was great, so welcoming and attentive. They also have a great wine list. Was expecting more. 9 of us dined here tonight. The service was VERY slow. Asked by hostess if we wanted sparkling or tap water. Asked for tap thinking bottled water and waiter brought glass bottles of still water. I refused it bc I'm not getting suckered into paying for it especially when upon asking It was confirmed there was a charge. Right. The plank mule sample was delicious. It's a drink that is similar to a mojito. That was a nice gesture. They automatically brought it out to our table upon arrival. Beautiful mini copper Mule. Salmon was cooked at an acceptable temperature and the dill sauce was very tasty. Salmon didn't really need anything it was cooked well on its own and brought out on a salt rock. Because of this restaurants location to our accommodations and the discount brunch card that we had (difference of $125.00 mxn pesos) and it is our last day -Saturday we thought we would give it a shot again. We had ordered the salmon, the chicken, and the steak and onion bagel. Salmon and chicken were wrapped in cedar paper. Salmon extremely extremely extremely dry. The chicken was ok. The quality of the chicken wasn't up to par, some pieces were acceptable some were not, think rubberish. Sampled the steak and onion on ciabatta and the sauce was pretty good on the sandwich. Best of all 3. Ordered a full-size plank mule. Didn't disappoint, reminds me of a Brazilian caipirinha with mint. The buffet included consisted of fruit and oatmeal- boring. I get it Americans in Mexico for vacation and most of us don't speak Spanish. But the server that helped me and my friends basically lied about everything on the menu. Everything we ordered we couldn't eat because they lied about how it was made or what was in the meal. Also how she asked me how I wanted my steak! I asked for well done and she gave me medium. Service is excellent. It's pricey but it's an upscale experience. It's off of 5th so you don't get hassled by the mariachi or the salespersons, which is nice. Ambience is relaxed with uptempo easy listening/jazz. I ordered the lobster which was a little tough for my liking - I also had to peel it out of the shell. My husband ordered the Chilean sea bass which was fantastic! It came on a Himalayan sea salt plank and melted in your mouth, as it should. We ordered the stuffed portobello for an appetizer which was excellent! And as a side, we ordered spinach - so-so. They have an excellent wine selection, which is rare in this area. We ordered a NZ Sauv Blanc (Matua) for almost $45 USD for a bottle (it's $12 back home) but worth it considering the lack of options in the area. Overall, a good experience. Very expensive. So glad we visited this restaurant! We had spent the afternoon on Cozumel for my father's birthday and were pretty wiped out. We had yet to have birthday cake so we decided to walk up the street from our condo to Plank for drinks and dessert. We sat near the bar and had an excellent experience. The servers were great at explaining the dessert options. When we ordered a birthday shot for international tequila day, Francesca (I think that was her name) guided us toward Mezcal instead, with a great recommendation. The wine (a Mexican Organic) was one of the better glasses I've had in Playa. At the end, the servers came out and sang Mananitas, and seemed genuinely enthusiastic to celebrate with us. Really enjoyed the Brunch today. The A/C in our hotel went out (Acanto), so the hotel gave us a free brunch voucher to use while they moved our stuff to a new room. Brunch was excellent and included a fresh cooked meal of your choice, free alcoholic drink, coffee, tea, fruits, desserts- everything! Price would have been $275 pesos (around $18 dollars). With so many above average options for food in this town, Plank stands out among the top 3 places we tried during our 2 week stay. If you are looking for a romantic or special occasion dining experience, don't pass this one up. Portions are on the small side however the extras that accompany result in a well rounded meal. Not a good experience. Would not recommend. My meal (the chicken pot pie) arrived barely warm, my sons salmon seemed under cooked. My daughter got the vegetarian menu. My wife had the beet salad was OK, but lacked any type of dressing and was quite bland. My son had the shrimp which had a very odd citrus sauce. My daughter had the ribs which were very mediocre. Was excellent when it first opened last year. Not as good this year. We had the tower of seafood which was the most expensive item on the menu. Much of the seafood seemed frozen and not fresh. The flat bread appetizer with three dips is very good and so are the drinks. I was introduced to the caipirinha which was very refreshing. The tuna didn't seem to be sushi quality and the tempura was somewhat greasy. I hope they can up their game and we will come back. read more

I went here with a group for a birthday. The service was *excellent*. The flatbreads were delicious--and I'm usually not a fan of flatbread. Two people in my group said their steaks were underdone--cooked less than they requested--but the server took the meat back to fix it. Prices are definitely on the high end for Playa but it's great for a nice night. It seemed like a restaurant that would fit in back home in SoCal. We told the server it was a birthday and they impressed us so much--they brought out a dessert, sang a song, and even stuck a firecracker in the dessert!! It was funny and awesome. read more

If you're looking for a romantic dinner for two this is the place. We got a table straight away and got handed a menu that will seem very pricey but it's absolutely worthy. The fish carpaccio is absolutely delicious, it tastes like one of the best sashimis of Japan. We then got the baby lobster and rib eye. Beware! The portions are huge. We were warned by the waiter but badly advices by our hunger. The side orders of Mac and cheese and roasted veggies were very nice, the Parmesan potatoes not so much.
