Had a great experience here! 10 stars for the staff (seriously such nice and knowledgable humans), but not so many stars for smelling like a sweaty gym. The restrooms were very clean though! So it's been about 15 years since I've done any belaying and ~nearly 10 years since I've done any bouldering! Basically a newbie all over again. Both rooms (one side is belaying, top roping and the other for only bouldering and competition bouldering) were PACKED on a Sunday afternoon. I'll be back to do a starter package sometime, and I'l have to find a time that's a little less crowded. It did start to clear out around ~5pm-ish. People are very respectful of others' space and move quickly so I felt like I always had something to try. Lots of kiddos here too so fairly family friendly place. They have staff around the rooms too in case you need anything. Ethan was great! It's also pretty sweet that they have a full coffee shop set up in there too. Some people were just sitting, reading, chatting, etc. The offerings look tasty! read more

Amazing facility with a lot of wasted potential. The staff on the belay side are a bunch of assholes. They are waiting and watching you like a hawk for any type of mistake or misstep, whether is mattered for safety or not, to revoke your belay tags. Really crazy sensitive to procedure and BS that any experienced climber would shrug off as a minor insignificant mistake. Smug as hell when they do it too. Also route setting is very lazy, they rarely change routes even though there's tons of staff sitting around. Usually about 50-80% of the routes are ungraded too which is pretty annoying and lazy. It's a shame it's run so poorly hope it gets better because the facility is amazing and huge. read more

Very mediocre gym. I've been climbing here for a while and they really need to step it up if they don't want to get outpaced by DYNO. The grading is inconsistent and overall very soft, all of their V4s are remarkably easy. They have V4s here that would be a V2 at DYNO. Every set they seem to set a jugg-ladder V4, I don't know who keeps setting these easy V4s but they're not qualified to set routes. If another rock climbing gym opened in Ann Arbor, nobody would come here anymore. I know several people who live very close to Planet Rock and still choose to drive all the way to the other side of town to go to DYNO. Frankly DYNO is a better gym. A newer, cleaner, safer, more creative and professional gym. Pros: Cool staff, excellent lead routes, good slab climbing, new and expanded bouldering area, spacious facility Cons: Very old and overused holds from the 90s (though they've been slowly incorporating new ones), bouldering overall sucks outside of their slab, (especially comp, EVERYONE agrees the comp boulders here are deplorable) GRADE THE BLACK BOULDERS FOR ONCE! They never, ever grade black boulders and use the awful excuse that they can't get a white/grey sharpie??? Seriously? Office Max is 5 minutes up the street. Absolute Laziness. I will continue to climb here purely since I care about training and sometimes it's convenient when I'm on this side of town, but overall I'm unimpressed with this gym and may switch to DYNO permanently if they don't get it together. read more

I'm a long-time member and growing increasingly frustrated and disappointed. The route-setting is super inconsistent in its grading. Not only that, but the route-setting is generally poor, with climbs being uncomfortable and not having any flow, regardless of grade. Of course, they also leave routes up for months on end without changing them. The staff are also frequently rude and unpleasant to members. They make non-stop announcements about how the gym is closing in 1 hour...30 minutes...10 minutes...8 minutes...etc. These announcements drone on and on and leave me with an impression that the staff genuinely do not like their jobs or the people they interact with. The gym is also straight-up dirty. Feels like it hasn't been vacuumed in years. Planer Rock thinks it can get away with its shenanigans because it has a monopoly in Ann Arbor, but if another climbing gym were to open nearby it would be curtains for PR. The quality is just so poor compared to every other climbing gym I've climbed at. read more

Edit: I'd like to update that the management team was attentive and professional in resolving this. Hope they'd offer better communications in the future. I've climbed here regularly for two years. Their lead guidelines are unclear and staff are undertrained. Many of my international/non-native speaking friends had been targeted by the staff while lead climbing here. One former staff named Lorenzo had multiple complaints against him before he left. Yesterday their staff Kevin watched our lead climb for a prolonged time, did not call for action while we're on the wall, but decided to take our lead tags after hours when we were leaving. This is not normal procedure. Kevin seemed to be paying extra attention because we weren't speaking English in our group. Even attempted to take our 3rd member's lead tag for her being around. He had a record of refusing to give lead and belay certificates to qualified climbers from my background before. The mistake that Kevin called us out for was not covered as part of their lead training and his behavior was not acceptable. read more

Spacious - two rooms with lots of surfaces to tackle at all skill levels along with training areas. The crew was setting up new climbing patterns on one wall when my guy and I visited. New patterns to provide more challenge are never a bad thing. Popped in for a quick visit, so no idea about the actual experience, though there are a good number of guests present in the rooms when we dropped in. Staff was friendly and informative. Decent selection of gear in the lobby for purchase, as well as retired rental gear on and under side tables in the café for purchase at a discount. Started bouldering in January of this year. Planet Rock was my starter gym. Really enjoyed bouldering here up until March/April. They stopped grading the bouldering walls. I could understand waiting a week to grade to get people to try something new, but sometimes I won't even know what I climbed at all after the set has been replaced. Spoke to staff about it. They said they wanted to get people to try new things. Only way I could find out what I was climbing is if a setter was available to go over it. Funny thing is, it's only bouldering they don't grade, everything else is graded. I wish staff would have talked to their climbers about this before they made this decision. I used to pay the monthly rate, and for what, to not know what I'm climbing? I even got desperate enough to email staff asking what I was climbing on the slab and they never replied. Getting people to try new things just feels like an excuse. I've been to multiple gyms which all grade differently, but at least it's a basis. You could at least put a range like Terrafirma does. Glad I moved so that I don't have to deal with this anymore. Don't come here if you wanna know what you are climbing when you boulder. read more

The facility is actually terrible. I'm genuinely confused how this place doesn't have a worse average rating. I think if this was the only climbing gym i've ever been to, i'd think it was good. The hand and foot holds friction is worn down, the bathrooms aren't stocked, the lock on the bathroom doesn't work, the only place to wash your hands is in a single person bathroom. so you have to put on your shoes with dirty hands in order to wash them, your required to know how to belay just to climb, even just for bouldering, the list goes on. How can there be this many problems? One upside is that they have campus boards. Thanks for that. read more

This place is excellent!! We were visiting from California for Thanksgiving break and looking for something fun to do while the rest of the family still had work and school during the earlier part of the week. Auto belays for beginners and kids let me strap my 5.10b six year old in to show off without me having to rent a harness (score). For veteran climbers we just had to pass a quick belay test to get our day pass without a lesson. Lots of different and interesting bouldering spots sprinkled throughout the gym. They made good use of the space in the center of the gym as most places will line up big wall climbing around the perimeter leaving dead space through the middle. A little ingenious ramp with a traversing walled tunnel up to a rope bridge adds interest and lots of interesting spaces to climb if you want to work a problem out on your own away from crowds. One night we grabbed a gaggle of family members after a family photo shoot for an impromptu jaunt to planet rock - and they accommodated us with a group belay lesson and starter package. (There was 12 of us.). We climbed here four days straight because we couldn't get enough and managed to take home memories to last a lifetime with the extended family that came along with. read more

Don't go here if you value safety in a climbing gym, at least until they change their practices. On my first visit, I went with two friends who had just taken their top roping course here, and one of them dropped me while lowering me at the end of a top rope climb. Fortunately I wasn't seriously injured. It would be easy to say it was her fault, but I've heard a former employee joke that drops are pretty common here, and when I was dropped, the employee who talked to me said she was dropped a few weeks before. But I've spoken to more avid climbers who have said that they have never seen someone get dropped at a gym, ever, in their life. And in the last few months, I've had the chance to visit a few different climbing gyms around the country, and other gyms employ safety practices, instruction, and equipment that Planet Rock does not. I hope they fix these things, so I want to outline all the things that I saw wrong here, even though I only went for a single visit. 1. For top rope routes, rather than passing the rope over a pulley or a large mounted cylinder at the top of the climb, they simply pass them through a carabiner! You can even see this in photos posted online. There are a bunch of things wrong with this. One of the big issues is that this provides considerably less friction on the rope, which directly contributed to my partner dropping me. Another issue is that it may not take as much weight off the belayer. At Planet Rock, they have clips all over the ground for belayers to clip into, and even top roping with a partner who is 70% of my weight, she needed to clip into the ground to belay me. 2. In the top roping introduction, they didn't teach communication or partner checks. My belay partners had no idea what I meant when I said "On belay?", and were surprised when I asked to check their harnesses (and one of them had failed to lock her carabiner). 3. Tangentially from the last point, when you rent a belay device, they use carabiners which need to be screwed to be locked. This isn't a huge deal IF you teach partner checks, but either way I think it's better to rent out auto-locking carabiners. 4. When I was took my belay test, they never watched me lower anybody, and I don't know if they covered lowering in the belay instruction. I believe part of the reason I was dropped is because my partner was lowering me by loosening her grip on the rope and letting it slip, rather than always maintaining a firm grip with at least one hand and using your arms to lower. I know some places would say this was okay, but for beginners, I don't think so. Before I was dropped my partner was lowering me too quickly, which heated up the rope near her belay device, and it got too hot so she let go without thinking about it. 5. This gym gets CROWDED, and the climbers here aren't taught that not interfering with others is part of safety, and no one enforces it. In one day I saw multiple people walk under each other's ropes, including one person get lowered onto the head of another passing underneath (slowly, fortunately, so no injury), and I had to stop at the crux on one of my routes because a fast climber came up behind me on an adjacent and overlapping route. Most gyms don't instruct on these things explicitly, but do warn people when they see it happen, and foster a culture of safety and looking out for each other. I've also never seen a gym get as crowded as this place in the evenings, which is where this culture is most necessary. 6. This last one is more of a medical comment, but after I was dropped, the employee asked me a bunch of questions about how I felt, while I was still sitting on the ground where I fell. She did ask whether I thought I could stand, and I think she had good intentions to not make me get up. But now I've done a little bit of medical training myself, and I think that an employee should probably do a spine assessment after a drop, or at the very minimum, ask the person to get up and walk around, to verify that there isn't a spinal injury. read more

OMG... this is a good/horrible way to find out if you really trust a person. 1st first-timer -- The was the best and worst experience ever. Lol! Only because I didn't trust the person holding it at the other end. You had to go to a 30 min training which including safety checks, knotting, and what to do if someone offs. Your first session will cost about $42 (includes equipment, safety class, shoes, and entrance fee) and after your first session than it's like $20 or $25. ***The only bad thing they didn't let the group experienc was actually falling a little. I am proud of myself because I gotten like 12ft off the floor and I wasn't scared of looking down (Of course i'm good in that department) but because the other was talking and looking around. (OMG I just about sh#tty my pants - woo I'm glad I wear black) Lol! There's a lot kids around but everything is well organized and supervised. I have no idea why I agreed to come here, but it looks like I've been sucked into the world of rock climbing. My boyfriend brought me for a fun date activity. He has already climbed a few times so he hung around while I went through the intro class. The startup package includes all the equipment you need for your first day, a one hour training session and a free day pass for your second visit. The training session was incredibly helpful and our trainer was extremely patient with us newbies. I didn't think I would be so scared to tie a knot... but when your life depends on it, it's kind of a big deal. For those who are less athletic (like me) and slightly terrified of falling from heights (like me) this is not an easy place to stomach. However, the staff will give you additional help if you aren't confident setting out on your own. And they have staff all throughout the center to help you if you need it. Yes, it smells like a gym. Mmmm chalk and sweat! Yes, there are people who are crazy good. No, I am not one of those people. Yes, I will be back! read more

Mark was super patient with us during our beginner lesson! He was a very good teacher adapting to our different learning styles, and we felt confident in ourselves safety and function wise by the end. Nice facilities with plenty of lockers and different training spaces. Only wish there were more easy/super beginner belay courses/paths because I am a baby and have no hand or upper body strength. In the past year or so that I've been a member, Planet Rock Ann Arbor has really been renovated. New flooring in the main section, completely new bouldering section opened up, AC installed for the summer, lots of newer holds, and they've been changing up top rope and lead routes more consistently. Oh, plus they've started yoga and aerial silks classes! I've been to a number of gyms in the west coast (Cliffs of Id, Mission Cliffs, Seattle Bouldering, and Phoenix Rock Gym) and I have to say, I prefer Planet Rock to the Touchstone gyms. Sure, some of the holds aren't as new and grippy, but there is always a lot of friendly staff members roaming the floor making sure people are being safe, and the route setting is a lot more interesting than what I've found elsewhere. Two random tips: Thursday nights are "crank nights" so entry is cheaper ($10). They price match online stores on their gear and shoes. Only downside... parking blows and it can get packed since this is one of the only gyms in the area. read more

Oh Planet Rock, what can I say? I've been coming here for quite some time and really the only reason I keep coming back is because it's the only place in town (a fact I'm sure they know). Compared to every other gym I've been to in CO, UT, CA, and even the Planet Rock in Madison Heights, PR-AA really needs a few improvements. 1). Old equipment and bad floors: They recently replaced some of the flooring (maybe about 20%) but the remaining flooring here is abysmal. Not only is it majorly inconvenient and kind of ghetto, but downright dangerous! The old foam flooring has holes in it all over the place and there are huge gaps between pieces, which is a broken leg or sprained ankle waiting to happen. Equipment such as ropes and holds also need to be replaced very badly as well since some of them are in pretty dire straights - we'll get to that in a bit. 2). I can't stress this enough, Planet Rock, you seriously need to CHANGE YOUR ROUTES!!!! 2 routes every few months is not good enough for people who are paying over $1000 a year for a couples pass, seeing how most gyms in the world update new routes every few weeks and never leave any given route up for longer than 2-3 months maximum. I'm writing this review at the end of Nov and there still some routes up on the wall that have been there since Feb / March! That's appalling. 3). Clean your holds: When you leave routes up for long periods of time, they get very very grimy and it makes them very difficult to climb (not to mention downright disgusting). So if you're not going to change your routes at least clean the darned things. Plus when the cadence of route changing is slower, everybody in the gym flocks to the new routes to celebrate that rare occasion so they're immediately chalked up & grimy after day 1. 4). Facilities upgrades: The last time I was here there was water trickling down the wall from a roof leak. In all fairness this is a pretty new issue for PR AA, but I find it's a good illustration to show the need for some building upgrades. This facility also gets super cold in the winter so I feel like it could use some updates. It kinda smells in the summer time too so maybe a new HVAC system is in order? And the bathrooms....oh my the gag factor in the bathrooms... 5). Kids: I'm all for teaching kids to climb and getting them into the sport, that really is awesome. What isn't awesome is when parents for some reason think PR is some kind of daycare or playscape and they can just let their kids run wild. I think I need to remind everybody that this is a GYM. When there's a children's birthday party (and let's face it, there's always a children's birthday party here), it gets downright annoying to have children running around, bouncing on the floors, rolling down the ramps, screaming when you're trying to concentrate...etc. etc. I think a regular "adult's night" would be a really great idea to give the more hardcore climbers a break since it feels like PR has been catering more to families than the 5.11+ climbers recently (because of the kids everywhere and the routes they set). 6). Music: Not really a huge deal, but who sets the music in this place? Do they have an album specifically for boring go-to-sleep music? We don't need a DJ but anything with more than 30bpm or anything that doesn't make you want to curl up and take a nap would be greatly appreciated. Anyways, PR-AA is what it is... read more

So there's this thing I like to do when I go indoor rock climbing. Okay, well two things but I'll rule out climbing since that should essentially be a given. Not to sound all pervy and what not, but climbers have amazing back muscles. I admit it. I stare at people's rippling back muscles when they're on their +5.11's and what not. It's almost like there's a weird spell over you where you can't look away. "Taking a break" (after a few successful climbs) usually involves me sipping on a bottle of water, laying on the blue bouncy mat, staring at muscles in a dreamy way. I suppose you want something useful to read besides my eccentricities. Well, come on Thursdays (Crank Night!) when everything is 1/2 off. Make sure you've got lots of chalk to climb with, an experienced belayer and significant amount of confidence. Even though it's relatively cheap to rent, it's worth it in the long run to buy your own harness and shoes (if you plan on coming here frequently). The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because of the loose holds you'll encounter every now and then. P.S. Do your pull-ups. read more

Got to come out and visit the other location of Planet Rock usually climb Madison Heights. This place is huge! The belay walls wrap around everywhere! Plenty of route and room! About maybe 10 auto belays as well little trickier than the MH ones. Loved having that cool cave to climb in! The bouldering area was interesting how it was spread out. Huge boulder in the middle and walls wrapped around as well. Friendly and helpful staff here. Hopefully will be making more trips here soon! read more

I have a membership at Planet Rock. It has plenty of top rope and lead climbing routes to work on as well as three different areas for bouldering. They also have a number of auto-belay routes for times when you don't have a climbing partner. There really are no other climbing gyms in the area, so this review in some ways doesn't serve a purpose! I just wanted to give three criticisms. The lockers for holding personal belongings are terrible. It's difficult to open them, and many of them are broken such that you can't lock them. Another complaint is that it often takes a long time to check into the climbing gym, especially during peak-use times. The staff, although friendly and helpful, seem to take their time checking people in. I get the sense that they don't respond very quickly to customers when they first come in. I think this can be off-putting to new climbers and first-timers at Planet Rock. My final criticism is that it can be hard to find parking at the gym. I'm not sure how this issue can be addressed, though. Despite these complaints, I enjoy climbing at Planet Rock. The routes are fun, and there are a lot of them to try at different difficulty levels. read more

People who have never been rock climbing before tend to think of it as an exclusive and extreme sport, reserved for people who swallow swords at the circus and walk on hot coals. Not so. When you're at Planet Rock, you see that it's a very family-friendly sport that's embraces climbers of all levels. This winter, I got into indoor rock climbing to ward off cabin fever and have become an addict ever since. There's a nice starter package for beginners where a staff member does a hands-on explanation of how to operate your gear and belay your partner. The starter package includes all your rental gear for the day, basic instruction, and a free day pass for the next time you visit the gym. All the staff are pretty friendly and make sure you feel comfortable and know all your safety checks. For those who are already advanced climbers, there are lead routes available, some going up to 5.12d. (They do have 5.13s at the gym in Pontiac, though.) There's plenty of bouldering space, too, so it's hard to get bored. It's a great bonding group activity, whether you're hanging with friends, entertaining your kids, or on a date. Even if your own friends suck and don't want to come with you, there's a forum on the Planet Rock website on which several people have found new partners. Been here several times and every time it's the same. Very very rude staff, very focused on money making, very chain-feel. The pros: Lots of routes, pretty large gym. The cons: Expensive. Comparable climbing locales in Grand Rapids are more affordable. Liable to run out of stuff (belay devices, etc.). Require you to be trained in belaying and top rope even if you just want to Boulder. Massive let down for people who want to introduce friends who would just want to jump on a rock wall for a bit. If you do decide to go through the lesson, it's an hour and a half long, and it's soooo boring. Basically your whole trip is spent learning information that someone who wants to Boulder wouldn't really care about. They say it's an insurance thing, but then you have to sign a waiver claiming liability, so that's confusing. Also, If you actually know how to belay and are just refreshing your memory on the figure 8 knot, they will not let you use the ropes in the facility and force you to take their class. Basically they just want to make money, I've never been to a place that requires you to learn to top rope in order to Boulder. Personally think it's a pity there is no other rock climbing locales in the area. If you have the time, all 3 of the locales in Grand Rapids are overall a better experience. read more

This was my first time climbing, and I came with my husband. His first time, too. So, when you first walk in, you are almost knocked over by the locker room smell. They had the doors open, but it was a hot, humid day. I mentioned something about the lack of AC, and the staff said the owner doesn't turn it on anymore. That's unfortunate! That said, I had an amazing time! Fantastic workout! The first hour is spent training, then they let you loose. We tried the easy walls and the hard ones, and everything in between. The staff were roaming around and checked on us newbies several times throughout our 3.5 hour stay. I give this four stars because of the climate in there. Otherwise, it was wicked! We'll be back. As my old barber used to tell me, climbers are going to Hell because it's a sin against God to risk your life in pursuit of selfish adrenaline thrills. But, I don't think that the punishment of eternal torture and damnation applies to gym climbing, since it's extremely safe and wholesome. Planet Rock is great because it has such a large variety of climbing terrain, tall routes, lots of bouldering area, and a friendly vibe that makes even n00bs feel at ease. Nick, the owner, is also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Planet Rock is a vertical oasis in the middle of Flat Land and helps keep Michiganders on the climbing map by giving them a place to stay strong. read more

I've been here once so far, and can understand why people are so into climbing. The staff here is super nice, and the belaying lesson that they make you take as a first timer is very useful and well taught. My instructor went over the knots and the concepts several times so that we all felt fairly confident in going off on our own. I was really worried that I would forget everything the second I started climbing, and found this fear to be unfounded. Instead, I got to concentrate all my energy on being scared of falling, but that's neither here nor there. I took off two stars b/c 1) there isn't good signage to direct you to their parking lot. I made a weird turn before I was able to find the right place. 2) the organization could be a little better. it was a little confusing to figure out where we should go at first, and then we found the climbing routes a little poorly labeled. I would definitely come back (in fact I'm looking forward to it). And that's saying a lot, considering I am terrified of heights. read more

People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that one of my favorite hobbies is rock climbing. See, I live in Northwestern Ohio, land of farm-fields, suburbs, and no rock-outcroppings or cliffs to speak of. However, a bit of respite from the overwhelmingly table-top topography of these parts can be found at Planet Rock climbing gym. Never put a harness on before? No problem. Wouldn't know a V2 from a V6, or even what they means? No problem. Afraid of looking like an idiot while climbing the 80 foot walls of the gym? Well.....that's your problem. I went to Planet Rock a year ago, a complete newbie, as they say. I left after my first time with the ability to properly and safely put on a harness, tie the necessary knots to connect myself to the belay line, and safely belay my partner when it is their turn to climb. A year later, although I haven't been climbing in entirely too long, I've gained strength and stamina through my newest hobby. Planet Rock is an ideal place to learn the basics of climbing and belaying, and is also a great place to move up in the grades and become that kick ass climber you know you can be. With something like 20,000 square feet of climbing terrain, it is hard to get bored here. There are three caves for bouldering, plenty of top-rope routes, and some impressive looking lead-climbing routes. This place is a joke of a gym. The staff is rude, unhelpful, likely high (can they do drug tests???) and does not take care of the gym. The bathrooms are disgusting and there are piles of chalk on top of the walls that haven't been cleaned in years. I wouldn't recommend this place for kids unless you come during non-busy hours. Good luck finding times when it's not busy because they open late on weekdays and close early weekends and holidays. I hope this place shapes up or another competing gym opens up read more

I asked about a child lesson and was strongly recommended the Parent + Child Starter Package. First we were asked to wait for the lesson - actually you waited for another 10 people to show up for the lesson. We waited for almost an hour! Then when the lesson finally started, the instructor kept asking people to back up because there was not enough space. 5 minutes into the lesson, I realize there was no room for my 6 year old at all and there was nothing for her to do either! I could not watch for her safety (I worried she might get hit by elbows) and learn how to tie knots at the same time. I asked her to sit on a bench nearby. When I finally thought I managed the knots and asked her to come over so I could show her (just so she would not be only sitting there), the instructor asked her to STAY ASIDE! I could not imagine my child sitting there for another hour and just left the lesson and she did some climbing on her own. This is my first ever review in my life. I hope people with kids who might consider taking the Starter Package can all see this before they go to Planet Rock Ann Arbor site so they don't waste their precious time. read more

Huge gym, tons of routes. Bouldering is graded pretty hard compared to California gyms, but that can be a good thing. Interesting sets, and they change frequently enough to not get bored with the bouldering. Staff is friendly. So why 3 stars? 1) Pricy. More expensive than Touchstone Climbing gyms in the Bay. 2) Bringing guests is a hassle because of their insurance policy that requires testing. They charge either a ton of money for a class (though it does include 2 climbing sessions and shoes), or charge to check you on belay safety, even if you're only bouldering. 3) Checking in can take a long time. They're getting a new system so hopefully it'll get more streamlined with swipable cards or something. 4) No guest passes for members. Every gym I've even been to in my life has given at least 1-2 guest passes per month to their members. They say it has to do with their insurance policy, even if your guests have passed their test. 5) No topping out on bouldering routes. 6) Thin padding in bouldering cave and no easy built-in downclimbing. So if you do a route that ends up high, and you're short, it's a long way down. Have definitely sprained things after finishing routes here. 7) Hot as sin in the summer. I still like this place, but with some changes it would really be awesome. read more
