Edited to add: My original statement stands - I love this place and the staff!!
After this review (which was not negative! and I had no hard feelings at all) the owner reached out and we had a wonderful, respectful conversation about it & he was so open to feedback and learning. Dino and all of the staff have always been wonderful but this was truly above and beyond customer service (coming from a supervisor in customer service).
My climbing experience has always been great, the staff are so kind and always willing to teach or help, etc. I always have and always will say nice things about Dyno Detroit! My girlfriend and I consistently drive to Detroit just to climb here (45 mins from Ann Arbor) instead of climbing at gyms in Ann Arbor & will continue to do so. :)
Original review (4 stars!!):
Love this place! Staff is always friendly and helpful and they make starting really easy. I have been here probably 5-10 times and it's always great.
Only two things: Gym can be crowded which is sometimes scary for newer climbers, to have so many people sitting and watching. Not the fault of Dyno, it's great so many people come to climb! Just something to look out for. Second thing, while visiting with my girlfriend (I am a lesbian) for her birthday, along with her sister and parents, we were doing the auto-belay course and kept calling all of us "sisters". Repeatedly. And listen - I'm a feminine woman. I'm used to people assuming I'm straight (and her sister lol). but after seeing tons of pride stuff in the gym (stickers, flag, etc) and being called sisters for the 9th time (after we hinted that wasn't the case), I corrected them and said (pointing to my girlfriend and I), "we're girlfriends, actually!" and they kinda laughed and one of them said "or sistahhhs". Again, I'm not usually put off by this kind of thing and I just laugh it off but I think going into the gym expecting more lgbtq+ awareness was what threw me a little bit!!
Not mad at all by the situation but I think it may just be something to consider when you work with a diverse crowd and support the lgbtq+ community via apparel and stickers!
Love this place and the atmosphere you continue to create. read more
