I was going to planet fitness the other day after a long day at work, when something with my membership wasn't working no one was at the counter for a good 5 minutes when this young man walks around the corner barley acknowledges me when I have to wave at him. It's been several years since visiting a PF, but I've had great experiences with their gyms before. I'm a travel nurse from Oregon & this location in Dover, NH is very clean & I feel safe there. They're strict with mask wearing (though you're allowed to remove during workouts if you so choose) which at this time in our lives is truly important. I've had great help with new equipment & always with a smile. Though it's further away from my hotel home in Portsmouth, I prefer the clean & friendly PF in Dover over the Portsmouth location. read more

This location is staffed by the not so brightest. I'm a black card member through another city and move around for work. The kid couldn't find my number and was a bit of a jerk about it. He had to call the host city, then didn't like that my address was different. I can only change locations once every three months, and I'm not going to be here for over 3 months. Update your system. I'm supposed to be able to go everywhere. Motivating in 0 degree weather is difficult enough when I don't have to wait 10 minutes to check in. I had high hopes. I read a lot about PF and the CEO. Impressed it started with this facility and the millions made. Living in Dover, I was proud of the accomplishments. But, it is unusable for me. I want to go and workout and then go straight to work without needing to drive back to my house to shower. It's impossible to do that, as the men's lockerroom is a stench bowl 24hrs a day. I did perform sports in school so I have some tolerance (or did) for stinky locker rooms. This is beyond that. So if Chris Rondeau wants to get everyone off the couch, the part that is preventing people like me who prefer to run on the street or work out at home is the stench of the locker rooms (and showers). The air quality in the gym is actually good, no complaints. but the design is not appropriate for locker room. It needs high CFM (Cubic Feet / Minute) air flow and de-humidifiers. The toilet area is connected and every time I have showed up there is someone unloading a weeks worth in the toilet. I travel a lot and use toilets in airports. The rate of traffic is much higher and those toilets don't stink like they do at PF. It tells me its a solvable problem with proper air flow engineering. The changing area is no better. At 4AM, I thought I would avoid the stench, but no. The sweat and humidity like a skunk in a Louisianna hot house with just one person in it. An air handler should have changed the air in that locker room (the entire lockerroom) several times in the last 30 minutes. Maybe $10/mo is too low. or have separate bIack card shower area. I think for PF to be appealing, it has to engineer the locker rooms with high CFM air handlers and de-humidifiers with charcoal filters. That air should circulate at a higher rate then the equipment area. Staff appears to acknowledge it when i speak to them about when to come in to avoid it. It's viewed as not a problem but a "ha ha" or "rite of passage" I have to put up with. It reminds me of the 60s/70s where dirty restrooms and burnt coffee were the norms at greasy gas station until businesses started attracting customers by doing better. What can I say that's not wrong with the place, last week for an hour there was nobody even working in the gym. A girl came in around 6 but that's still not ok. Where are the managers in this gym. Now on to that problem, that male manger, is a creep I checked in with my friend and as I was walking away I saw he looked and was talking about my age to the other cow worker, saying something about being over 18.. like what the actual fuck is that. I'd that how you hire you mangers? If so you just lost a member. You need to actually be watching what these guys are saying. I've been going to this gym for awhile, but if something doesn't change with the manager you'll be dealing with a bigger problem. If you are a female in your 20s or younger don't go to the gym unless you want the manger to make you feel so uncomfortable that you have to go cause why would you want to enjoy your workout.. read more

Also, when someone goes to tan, don't forget to turn the beds on... that's pretty annoying to have to get dressed, tell the dude behind the counter who's chit-chatting with other employees to turn it on... every damn time. Recently this place got all new equipment. It is very clean and "fancy" for a gym. Planet Fitness is okay for the regular gym-goer. Lots of cardio machines and some neat strength training machines as well. One thing very recently which has left myself and several other frequent customers a little upset is their removal of three basic compound exercises. At Planet Fitness in Dover, NH, you can no longer do a regular flat bench, a regular squat, and deadlifts ( you were never allowed to do deadlifts there anyway, but I always did them and saw others doing them as well.) I'll repeat: no bench, no squat, no deadlift. The three basic compound exercises...can't do them here LOL. They took out the flat benches completely and the two power racks. If you want to try to bench/squat, you now can only do it with the assistance of the smith press. Anyway, the price is good, the facility is pretty nice/fancy, and it is always open in a convenient location. It is suited well for novice - moderate gym goers. If you want to do any sort of serious lifting routine though, do not come here as there are limitations. I'm really torn if I will stay or not after the removal of bench/squat/deadlift. Well, here's the deal. I am just looking to get my ordinary rear on an ordinary treadmill, for cheap. I like Planet Fitness because it suits me. I'm not interested in taking a group class, I'm not interested in bulking up and I'm not interested in spending all the do-dah day there showering and chatting. I enjoy this gym because I've always been able to go in and find a free machine, and have never been treated rudely by the staff. They could use a bit more parking, and I think they could kick up the air circulation in the gym as I do start to get a bit overheated at times and not all machines have fans. Please enjoy this gym if you are looking for a place to work out cheap and solo, and you don't need special equipment! read more

I can't believe this place has 2 stars! It's definitely one of the better Planet Fitness facilities out there! I think people are confusing a couple of things here. Planet Fitness is a $10/month gym ($22 for all-gym use), and so you need to level set your expectations. Yes, from an amenities standpoint, the entire PF brand is a 2-star gym, just like how a Comfort Inn is a 2-star hotel. BUT- there are good Comfort Inns, and there are bad Comfort Inns; and likewise there are good PF's, and there are bad PF's. This is a good Planet FItness!! It's definitely one of the biggest in the area, has machines available during peak hours, good-sized stretching area out back, working showers and bubblers, doubles of a lot of popular machines, more squat racks (or whatever your supposed to call them here) than most PF's, etc. TLDR- 5 star on Yelp = "as good as it gets". It's a Planet Fitness, and it's as good as Planet Fitness can get. read more

I like Planet Fitness. The concept is great! Show up and feel comfortable doing whatever you define as a workout, at your own level, for as long as you wish... and feel absolutely no shame or pressure to keep up with anyone's expectations other than your own. All good! This PF location has all the good I've mentioned. Unfortunately, there are little things that prevent it from being amazing... one example - lockers that actually latch closed. No matter where you are starting, (first day, or getting competition ready) I think pf is great at catering to different types of people. I go to this location almost every day for about two hours a day, and I have to admit, yes it may get busy around (5-7pm), its not any other time of the day. I usually go around 7:30pm everyday and I'm always able to find treadmills, squat machines, benches, as i walk in. Service wise- I think the staff is extremely nice and always willing to help. They are not "meatheads" (like other reviews are saying) haha. They always greet me upon entering and leaving. Although they do not have free weight squat and benches (which my bf really wished they had) , I think this is a great place for anyone to start and not feel intimidated. There is a variety of different types of people with the same goal, and road to a healthier lifestyle. And for $10-20 with no down payment per month depending on your card, it easily beats $60 w/down payments at other gyms. read more

It's not flashy but it's fairly clean and there is generally enough equipment and space to do the trick. The staff is friendly and the price is right! If I'm gonna pay $65-$75 a month I'd expect someone to exercise for me. The other customers crack me up too. You got to love the 70 year old dude who trims the hedges "downtown" before heading out for a hot date in plain view in the men's locker room. Not exactly a judgment free zone when you see that. I need to knock this one down a couple of pegs. This place put some kind of blocking software in which hampers ability to watch Netflix on wi fi. Been going to planet fitness for three weeks and I like it. The atmosphere seems friendly enough. Most people just working out minding their business. Place is clean and I always see workers walking around dusting equipment, cleaning floors, filling paper and spray cleaner. Used the personal trainer for advice and was happy for Michaels help. I don't have much to compare to because I haven't belonged to a gym prior to this one however it seems pretty decent to me. If you go at the not so busy times (which I do) you can always get a machine and use the equipment you desire. The bathrooms are always clean and since I don't shower there I can't vouch for any of that sort of stuff. The staff seems snotty to me which was a big part of bringing down the stars. The two (a heavier guy and a girl who looks like she thinks she is cooler than a polar bear's toenails) are CLEARLY not there to be helpful to everyone. They give sharp quick answers and don't offer much help and the looks the girl gives to her non-friends make me want to scream in her face. I wanted to use a personal trainer and was told that they don't have one now (even though it is on their schedule) which was another big bummer to me because I'd like to learn specifically what I should be doing for my goals. This is more a criticism of the franchise than this location. It is clean, accessible, and has plenty of equipment. As long as you don't want a free weight bench or squat rack. Got to have machines for that. Want to deadlift? Sorry not happening. I asked them if they had scales to track weight loss. Was told they were taken out since they intimidated members. The same day they were serving pizza. Not a joke. Then all you see is lunk alarms and "gymtimidation" propaganda everywhere. This review is specifically for the Dover location. Management is rude and continually ignores requests to repair broken equipment. The manager's verbatim response was "we have other equipment besides the broken one for you to use". Excuse me, why am I paying a monthly fee for a facility with equipment that is broken for months on end? Poor customer service is frequent at this location, with no apology from the manager. I disagree with what the reviewer is saying below. I have been a member of this gym since September (used to be a member in Malden, MA) and I must say the people here are the complete opposite of judgmental. The whole lunk alarm thing is just a joke that uses irony to prove their main point, which is that this is not the gym for people who judge. Never once have any of the staff pushed or pressured me to purchase any of their equipment or products. What I love about the Dover gym specifically (other than 24 hours and new equipment) is that the staff is so uplifting and friendly, especially the guy who works late afternoon to night, Brandon. He addresses you by name and engages in conversation. He is also a great resource if you have any questions! I recommend this gym by all means! read more

Planet Fitness works for me. I have simple gym needs - just a treadmill for an hour a day. I'm not looking to do CrossFit - if you are, go to Portsmouth. I'm not looking to take Zumba - if you are, go to Kenneybunk. I'm not looking for a track or four pools or three levels of machines - if you are join The Works or Seacoast Sports Club. Planet Fitness in Dover is large, it's simple, the crowd is diverse, I always find a machine, even when it's busy, it's cheap, and it's close enough to home so I'm still motivated to go there. read more

Cheap but... you get what you pay for. Lots of machines, and open all hours make it convenient and easy to get a workout in. But don't plan on showering there. The locker rooms, while spacious, just aren't that comfortable. The showers in particular, at least in the women's locker room, are a little bizarre. They are PVC lined cubbies with low ceilings. You have to be under 5' 10" to actually fit into them and under 5' 6" to be comfortable. read more

I had a membership with this location that I wasn't using so I made the decision to cancel. I went physically into the location to cancel, physically signed the cancellation paperwork and was told I was all set by the guy working the counter. Two months later I was going through my bank statements and noticed I had still been charged the past two months for a membership! I immediately called and was informed that in order for them to do anything for me I would need to bring my signed cancellation contract (thankfully I still had it) and copies of my bank statements for the past two months that I was charged and that I would also have to wait to come in at a time that a certain manager was there. Upon going in now to cancel for the SECOND time I was told that the guy who had helped me previously had mishandled my cancelling process and had not fully canceled out my account. Plainly: They could see on their end that I had requested to cancel and signed the form but still made me jump through the hoops of coming back in with paperwork that they already had record of in their system. I was also told that they would have to send my request out and that I would get a reimbursement check for the two months in the mail. About a month later I finally received this reimbursement check and was only reimbursed for one month!! At this point I just gave up, granted it was only $20 at that point, but it amazes me that a company would be so careless. I may have been cancelling my account but I would NEVER consider going back after this experience. read more

I join this particular Planet Fitness at the end of February 2017 and I was never impressed. Recently, due to the construction, I have been going to the Durham location by the Lee traffic circle. I will never return to this location. The way the construction was handled was appalling. NO NOTIFICATION was ever given that construction was going to start and while it was going on, it was quite simply dangerous to be there!!!! Management should be ashamed of themselves! This place has certainly gone down hill in the last few years. It's far too busy, the work staff appear to be more interested in wasting time talking to each other than helping you, and broken machines don't seem to get fixed, or at the very least they do not check them. Cancelling was however by far the worst. You have to mail something in or show up in person, which of course I couldn't do since we had moved out of state. We ended up mailing in cancellation forms yet only one was processed. Despite filling out all of the information they never actually processed my form. They processed my boyfriend's form but that was it. They never bothered to contact me about it, yet were more than happy to bill me another month. I called to complain and they told me that I had two accounts. Why? I guess they were transferred but not properly, despite my boyfriend's going through fine they tried to make it my problem. I had to get very upset and fight with the manager just to get it cancelled over the phone, acting like he was doing me a big favor. Despite all of this the manager (who lacks soft skills I might add) didn't really care that they billed me. Once again it was my problem. No matter what I did they still wouldn't refund my money. I'm glad to be done with planet fitness and I hope people steer away from this one. If you want endless billing with a difficult at best cancellation policy then have at it. read more

Judged in the judgement free zone..... Planet Fitness is founded on a shame based philosophy that openly judges those who do not conform to their "model member" norm. The "shame alarm" is the most obvious symbol of the hypocrisy promoted at their facilities. Bad. Been going here for 7 years, and has been going downhill the past couple. First it started with the "Judgement Free" zone employees hovering over you and criticizing certain exercises you do. Yes, exactly what you want from a gym. (I even got told not to do pullups any more, pullups!? They then got rid of half the free weights, leaving only dumbbells. Planet Fitness apparently has a goal of being a place to go walk on a treadmill (I am sure before too long, running will be banned!) Planet Fitness is a great place to get a solid workout at an affordable price. I pay $10 per month, which is considerably less than what I was paying at a nearby fitness club. I'm not interested in taking any special classes, so PF works well for me. I never have a problem finding an open machine, and I really like the arc trainers they have. The facilities here are usually pretty clean, and the staff is very nice. When I walk in, they remember my name, and I appreciate that! I enjoy working out here! read more

Planet Fitness, or PF, as I like to call it, is a rare specimen of a gym. Let me explain. I thoroughly enjoy their "judgement-free zone" statement, which has extreme potential. However, something tells me that if I were to waltz onto a treadmill dressed in nothing both Mardi Gras beads, a harsh judgement would be made and I would be forced to leave my supposed safe zone. I've never tested this theory, but feel free. Either way, they're the only gym I've known that essentially trumpets "Come one, come all! Every fatty, every oldie, every weenie, every scantily-clad elder gentleman!" Which brings me to my second point. The reason I left PF was because of the amount of elderly male brautwurst at which I was inadvertantly exposed. Several times a day I'd stroll by a machine, and BAM, there would be a sweaty, puffing older gent, laying on his back, heaving dumbells into the air, his manhood on display for all to see. Even some of the older males on the treadmill would bob up and down in place, their teeny gym shorts failing to hide the slithering serpent. Quite frankly, it was terrifying. I decided that my innocence had been ruined, and I simply could not allow myself to continue seeing all of those meaty delicacies. PF's motto ended up being a curse - seemingly innocent, it drew to it the very worst of society's gym-goers. Not the grunters, not the sweaters, not the snobs - but rather the hidden evil that lays in every elderly man's pants. As for myself, I'll stick with my ancient treadmill in my basement. I am not complaining about the gym but about the wifi. Ever since I joined, the wifi is intermittent as best. The manager is doing her best but she doesn't have the power to fix it. It's like Planet Fitness doesn't care and in 2012, if you don't have wireless, then the gym is worthless. read more

I have been a member for 3 years and Planet Fitness has definitely gone downhill. I am sure it has something to do with being a publicly traded company now. Dover is overcrowded, getting rundown and the staff could care less about anything. If you can get a machine hopefully after your workout you can get a hot shower. I hope to change the number of stars soon, but this location did a giant renovation at a huge cost and now it seems that they do not have the capital to staff the place. Yesterday, the men's locker room was a filthy dump. 2 pair of dirty underwear on the floor, lots of soap suds all over the countertops by the sinks, empty water bottles on the counter snd on the floors, coat hangers, rags and paper towels on the floor. The locker room was like that when I arrived and when I left over an hour later. I am SURE it took more than an hour from the time the first pair of undies hit the floor till the time I left, so it is clear to me that general, simple housekeeping is not happening as often as it should be. Last, there was a pretty big shampoo spill by the showers that I slipped on. Were I not a hockey player used to slipping and regaining my balance, I may have cracked my head on the floor. I like the gym overall, and I will rerate the place if it stays clean more regularly: In response to the canned form letter below: I find your response insulting. There was one, singular female working during the time I was there. I cannot imagine for a second that she had dirty men's underwear duty on her to-do list. As I wrote above, I like the gym overall and will change the review once the gym deserves it. Last, the Stratham location was recently similarly staffed by a single female worker who needed to get to a hospital, but was not able to leave until her replacement arrived. Similar to another review on here, I am displeased with their recent removal of the squat racks, flat and incline benches, any form of barbells (although they did add a rack of barbells, but the weight is fixed and ranges from 10-60 lbs.). This gym was a great deal when they did have that equipment, and I could deal with the crowds of people and the fools that go to the gym, perform a set, and then hang around and check out Facebook on their phones, or chat with other gym rats. I've recently cancelled my membership and joined The Works, which is just up the street. More expensive, but its a real health club, not just a bunch of cardio and assisted weight machines for novices. Just my .02. Thanks for reading! read more

I like this gym better than others in the area. For 19.99 I get to use all the equipment, message chairs after working out, tanning and I get to bring a guest. I'm not looking for some flashy gym with multi levels, tons of classes, and "meat heads". I'm looking for a place to go to lose weight. I like going early in the morning (8am) during the week. You have a good pick of machines, it's not too busy and mostly older people are here at that time. I'm a bit self conscience. I'm on the much bigger side. I don't feel out of place here though. The staff is willing to explain and show how to use certain machines, the 30 minute circuit room is great. I honestly would recommend this gym over their over prices competitor in Somersworth on 108. You don't need all the bells and whistles. read more
