I was in town visiting family still in the Greenwood area and didn't think I'd be able to find any gym nearby with good bags to train on. I'm coming from the old Fairtex camps out of NorCal and was happy to see they had a Fairtex banana bag and similar heavy bags setup to hit on. They even had 3 separate speed bag stations (for varying heights) with the smaller, quicker speed bags which are great to use. Kru Ian was very hospitable. Took time to even chat it up a bit on top of giving pointer (and reminder!) on my "lazy" teep! If you want to get in shape and learn 1 of the best martial arts for self-defense and/or be a competitive fighter, Muay Thai with a supplemental foundation in Western Boxing is where it's at IMHO. You are NEVER too old. I'm 52 and even new members I meet think I'm in my 30s. Kru Ian is in his mid-40s and could easily pass for 30! Thank you Sir. I am very grateful for your time and use of your facility! -Edgar https://www.beatsbysiredgar.love/ Yelp's #1 Ranked DJ for Napa Yelp's #1 Ranked DJ for Calistoga Yelp's #1 Ranked DJ for St. Helena Yelp's #1 Ranked DJ for Yountville Yelp's #1 Ranked DJ for San Francisco Yelp's #1 Ranked DJ for Palo Alto Training out of KOA Fitness, Newark CA

UPDATED Review--…read more After a year away from Indianapolis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I decided to give the revised format for initiating new students a try. And I have to say it made a huge difference in my experience. Last year I tried Indy BJJ and wound up with a bruised rib and feeling pretty lousy for a couple weeks while that healed. Prof. Eldred reached out to me earlier this year to let me know that they'd changed how they introduce new students to the system and invited me back when I was ready. In the interim, I trained heavily at Title Boxing in Glendale. Getting into much better shape there was probably a good start for this. The new system for initiating first-time students helps a lot, too. And this system brought back the missing stars from my previous review. The new system starts first with private instruction with Prof Eldred before joining a group class. That way when you get tossed into the group class, you're not totally at a loss as to what's being discussed. It doesn't mean the first class won't be confusing, it just means that you won't be going in totally blind. It really helped me to have more confidence. Grappling is one of my least favorite things. If, God forbid, I were ever in a real fight, I'd much prefer to rely on my boxing background. That said, BJJ is a proven defense system employed everywhere from police to military to combat sports. And it's a great work out that tests some very different muscles from boxing. So I feel like it's worth trying to learn. But it's intimidating as all get out! Those private primer classes directly from Prof. Eldred really took the sting off in jumping into group classes. If you're looking for a BJJ school that focuses on self-defense and has a rock-solid lineage back to the Gracies, this would be the right fit for you. I'll probably never be a good grappler, or even really enjoy it. But I've got some faith that under this school's tutelage, I'll at least be sufficient enough to have an idea of what I'm doing if I were ever in a grappling situation.

After my first month, I feel like I've made large improvements in my grappling ability, cardio, and -frankly- confidence outside of the gym. It takes about a week to get the swing of how practice works and you might not understand how much you're improving at first until you start rolling - which can be within the first couple weeks of consistent attendance and effort. If you're as new to the sport as I am, all you'll need to do is bring a respectful but positive attitude to practice and trust what they're teaching you in class, the tempo and dope submissions will slowly accumulate as you work through the more cornerstone principles they focus on in class. Be ready to sweat, too- it's a great total body workout!
