They have recently renamed to Barks and Wildlife Retreat, but the great service and friendly staff remains the same. I love my senior dog Bryn like my child and she is very particular with who/what she likes, however I never have to worry when I drop her off for extended boarding and they take very good care of her. They have gone a great job at giving her medication, vitamins, and one-on-one playtime, since she's a feisty girl that doesn't like other big dogs. I have boarded her at this location countless times over the years and she actually really gets excited when arriving. For added peace of mind, all of the suites come with cameras at no extra cost, that can be accessed through an app so that you can check in on your fur baby at any time while you're away. They also do a fantastic job at sending me photos of her during playtime so I never question whether she's getting individualized attention. The staff will gladly give new owners a tour when visiting for the first time, and likewise allow pet owners to walk their dogs in to the suites when dropping off for boarding to ensure pets are comfortable and know how to use the doggy doors. Overall, I feel you get what you pay for at this location given other locations will nickel and dime you for playtime, cameras, AC controlled kennels, medication administration, or have restrictions on bringing in personal items. I am able to bring her big comfy bed for her to lay on in case she's not feeling the provided hammock style beds. They have also recently added grooming services, so you can pick up your pet freshly groomed or bathed, since they do tend to get a bit dirty running around and playing in the courtyards. I will continue to use Barks and Wildlife for however much longer Bryn is with us, so don't hesitate to trust them with your pets on your next getaway.

So we made the difficult decision to have her euthanized. Trying to make her as comfortable as possible. We made the appointment. With the assumption it would quick and painless. Instead they made my family wait an hour in the exam room. Even then we had to ask someone to come in and help us. At that point the Vet came in as arrogant POS. Then proceeded to try and charge us $400 to put my dog down. $65 for the exam that wasn't necessary and $100 for the meds. So where did the extra $235 come from? I feel they just want to take advantage of a grieving family. Trying to get every dollar they can while you're obviously upset. All of that said, your pets deserve better. Don't take them here for anything.

It has been a long time since I've used this kennel, but I have nothing but great memories of…read moretalking with Mr. Schomer, who has helped me with two different dogs I've had over the years. Schomer is located near Conroe. Despite living in Southwest Houston, I felt this kennel was worth the drive for the services I used. The first time I used his services was back in 1998, with my boxer/pitbull mix named Bailey. Bailey was a jackass before introduced to Schomer. I was told it would take about a month, and given the reasonable fee structure at the time. As we approached the end of the month he was there, I got a call with an update from Mr. Schomer who told me about Bailey's progress. While my dog had definitely made some accomplishments, Schomer felt I would be happier if he kept him for another month. This was not a negative thing AT ALL. Read the second sentence of this paragraph again. In fact, Schomer insisted that I come up to see how things were going for myself. We watched from indoors as Schomer brought Bailey out and demonstrated the newly learned behaviors. I was in tears and absolutely amazed. Once Bailey graduated from the program after the second month, he truly was a different dog. He went from being a problem child to being an obedient dog. As a bonus, my smaller dog, Noah (English pointer), had picked up on Bailey's training and began mimicking Bailey. I had very good success walking Bailey and maintaining control around other dogs. Interestingly, Noah did not require a leash moving forward and became an even more amazing dog. Fast forward later in Noah's life to 2012, I had moved to the Woodlands and it became more convenient to use this kennel for boarding. There were some times I was traveling extensively and had turned to Schomer for help. Noah was much older at this time, and Schomer was very helpful in diagnosing an issue for me. She lost her hair so he send her to a Dermatologist who said she was allergic to soy. And, had mites she was certain. Dr. Salazar's staff did the lime baths, changed the food again and she no longer is on meds and is a chub. All her hair is back. Due to Dr. Salazar's expertise, I have a healthy cat. We brought our 8 year old australian…read moreshepherd mix in for having a cough and a swollen left paw, and in two weeks time our animal was euthanized. They could not diagnose anything and left it to cancer as the cause. Before we took him in, he was running in the backyard, running and jumping on the couches knowing that he was going somewhere fun to barely moving, laying down and not having the energy to do anything in just two short weeks. Initially, he went the first four days without any treatment except we could give him a cough pill. Then he was given carprofen which did very little while the vet determined whether it could be a fungal infection. When that test came back negative, it was determined to put the dog on prednisone and Augmentin. I don't know if they did that because I questioned to whether or not he had a bacterial infection. A few days later, he was given doxycycline and that is when the throwing up, panting and lethargy set in. That first day, Hilo had a temperature of 103.8. It wasn't until the last time we took him in that his temperature was normal. Two days later we had to put him down because we thought he was suffering. I am writing this because I am grieving the loss of dog. I do not understand in that short bit of time and almost three thousand dollars later that I am without him and I have this huge hole in my heart. That two thousand dollars paid for a couple of x-rays and a couple of blood draws to rule out things, but they never confirmed cancer. Mrs. Coleman just thought if it wasn't fungal then it had to have been cancer. I can't accept that. I think more should have been done to try and diagnose what was wrong with my dog. Maybe, I should have taken him to get a second opinion and paid another two to three thousand dollars for no answers, but that even scared me too.
