I've been welcomed into a world that isn't just about guitars but seems to be intrinsically about the life. This shop is a classic example of people living the guitar playing life. Most well known for their selection of vintage guitars this is a fine place to hold onto some truly beautiful pieces of work and utter "she will be mine" straight out of Wayne's World. For those serious on buying a guitar these guys have a wide choice and a clearly high level of expertise to guide you through the process. With lessons to boot this seems to be a very good guitar one stop.

This is a good supplier of both big name brands, and smaller lesser well known models. The best thing, though, are the vintage guitars, which are purely beautiful and worth beholding even if you don't give it a try and play. There's a few superb Gibsons and Rickenbackers in stock at the moment so I strongly advise a browse. Unlike their Bishopston rivals, they do have some of the standard guitars you would expect to see in a guitar shop. The owner is usually in the hop, a fairly friendly guy who's always willing to help out. They also have guitar tuition on offer, but I haven't heard any reports about the standard of teaching - the prices seem quite reasonable though so perhaps worth a go.

I can make a guitar sound alright and I'm sure if I leant on a piano it'd make a noise but it's never been my obsession. For those whom it is, this shop is for you. Row after row of sheet music take centre stage in this performance with everything from Led Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye in all sorts of instruments. Then toward the back of the shop you can find the real beauties - the saxophones and the drum kits, neatly laid out in this ample store. A column of beautiful harmonicas and flutes adorns one wall and some more percussion in another. As you approach the till expect boxes and pots of plectrums and tuners, straps and clasps. The cashier himself is music personified every part an extra stumbled in from Wayne's World. The Music Room is everything that you would it expect it to be and a little more.

They've got a good range in stock and if what you can't find what you're looking for then they're more than happy to order it in for you. It's a great place to go if you're looking for something in particular, but it's also got such a good range that it's worth going in to have a browse. At the back of the store theres a fairly decent selection of brass and woodwind instruments, as well as some digital pianos and drum kits. Certainly worth a look if you're a musician in the area.

This is Hobgoblin Bristol's flagship shop, stocked floor to ceiling with all sorts of weird and wonderful instruments, as well as sheet music, music books and accessories such as metronomes, tuners and music stands. It's a wonderful place to browse around because there are so many unusual and beautiful instruments to look at, from mandolins and banjos to harps and fiddles. Manager Cris Pierssene is clearly passionate about the instruments he stocks, and all the staff are involved in folk music in some way or other. Shoppers can try out and compare acoustic, folk, celtic and world musical instruments before they buy. When I visited as a student - buying something really dull like extension cables and something to do with a modem - I felt like the only bit of colour in an otherwise white, grey and black world. I flounced in and had no idea where to go and what to ask for, and felt immediately ridiculous! I asked the nearest assistant for help, and felt that he, too, probably thought I was ridiculous! They are very, very helpful in here, and luckily very patient when faced with absurd people like me who think it's somehow kooky and endearingly old-fashioned not to have a clue about extension leads! All I know is that I have always managed to get what I need in here, even if I don't entirely understand exactly what I'm buying.

They've got a good range of item categories, with things like car accessories, networking, lighting, sound etc. It's a perfect shop to pick up those annoying extra parts you need for so many electrical things - connection adapters, for example. They've constantly got some kind of deal on the go, which is widely advertised on their large front window looking out onto the road. The staff, who do seem to be new everytime I go in there, are nonetheless very helpful, and always have good knowledge of technology to help you out. Its only let down is the slight feeling they're a jack of all trades and a master of none - their sound section, for example, houses only the most basic kind of microphones and P.As. If you're after quality then you might be better going to a specialist shop for the product required. All in all, though, Maplins is a pretty useful shop to have in this good position on Gloucester Road.
