Row after row of sheet music take centre stage in this performance with everything from Led Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye in all sorts of instruments. Then toward the back of the shop you can find the real beauties - the saxophones and the drum kits, neatly laid out in this ample store. A column of beautiful harmonicas and flutes adorns one wall and some more percussion in another. As you approach the till expect boxes and pots of plectrums and tuners, straps and clasps. The cashier himself is music personified every part an extra stumbled in from Wayne's World. The Music Room is everything that you would it expect it to be and a little more.

They've got a good range in stock and if what you can't find what you're looking for then they're more than happy to order it in for you. At the back of the store theres a fairly decent selection of brass and woodwind instruments, as well as some digital pianos and drum kits. Certainly worth a look if you're a musician in the area.

This is Hobgoblin Bristol's flagship shop, stocked floor to ceiling with all sorts of weird and wonderful instruments, as well as sheet music, music books and accessories such as metronomes, tuners and music stands. It's a wonderful place to browse around because there are so many unusual and beautiful instruments to look at, from mandolins and banjos to harps and fiddles. Manager Cris Pierssene is clearly passionate about the instruments he stocks, and all the staff are involved in folk music in some way or other. Shoppers can try out and compare acoustic, folk, celtic and world musical instruments before they buy. You can also look at the stock of used musical instruments if you're a beginner on a tighter budget, or if you would rather buy a vintage or antique instruments.

There is a large red sign at the front of the shop saying, rather misleadingly, PIANOS. Whilst they do sell pianos, that's really only scratching the surface. The first floor is mainly for classical instruments, whilst the basement houses the guitars, drum kits and amplifiers. There's a lovely corner full of classical guitars, where I can happily while away half an hour, given the chance. The staff are very friendly and never pressure you to buy. There are finance options available for some instruments, too - useful if you're lusting over that new Martin Acoustic, but haven't quite saved enough pennies yet!

This is a good supplier of both big name brands, and smaller lesser well known models. The best thing, though, are the vintage guitars, which are purely beautiful and worth beholding even if you don't give it a try and play. There's a few superb Gibsons and Rickenbackers in stock at the moment so I strongly advise a browse. Unlike their Bishopston rivals, they do have some of the standard guitars you would expect to see in a guitar shop. The owner is usually in the hop, a fairly friendly guy who's always willing to help out. They also have guitar tuition on offer, but I haven't heard any reports about the standard of teaching - the prices seem quite reasonable though so perhaps worth a go.

I've been having accordion lessons with John since January 2011…read more I first saw John playing the accordion while he was busking in Clifton Village and was truly impressed by his talent and obvious love for the instrument. When I found out that he also taught, I decided to take the plunge and get the lessons I'd wanted for a while. I phoned John (a friend had picked up his business card) and he took me through what I needed to consider and gave me some really helpful, impartial advice on buying my own accordion. John's a really patient and flexible teacher and is happy to work at a pace I'm comfortable with. He's always listened to me, taking the time to understand what kind of music I wanted to play and what I wanted to achieve, and choosing pieces at my level/ shaping the lessons accordingly. I've found him to be a very positive, knowledgeable and encouraging person to learn from.

This shop is the first of its kind and the type of place that makes you proud to live in Bristol. Some of the owners are members of the well known Balkan Gypsy band based in Bristol called La Fuchsia (...or very similar) and they have a direct line to Mostar so they can order all of the incredible instruments directly. The instruments are so beautifully shaped you want to pick them up just to see what sound they make. This shop is new and literally opened today. It was fantastic, they played these beautifully shaped instruments live all day but even if you missed it I would recommend taking a stroll down to this shop in St Nicks Market as, wonderfully, this music has become of real cultural significance to Bristol.
