Whilst travelling through Ecuador recently I picked up a guitar and ever since haven't been able to…read moreput it down. I've been welcomed into a world that isn't just about guitars but seems to be intrinsically about the life. This shop is a classic example of people living the guitar playing life. Most well known for their selection of vintage guitars this is a fine place to hold onto some truly beautiful pieces of work and utter "she will be mine" straight out of Wayne's World. For those serious on buying a guitar these guys have a wide choice and a clearly high level of expertise to guide you through the process. With lessons to boot this seems to be a very good guitar one stop.

This is a good supplier of both big name brands, and smaller lesser well known models. The best thing, though, are the vintage guitars, which are purely beautiful and worth beholding even if you don't give it a try and play. There's a few superb Gibsons and Rickenbackers in stock at the moment so I strongly advise a browse. Unlike their Bishopston rivals, they do have some of the standard guitars you would expect to see in a guitar shop. The owner is usually in the hop, a fairly friendly guy who's always willing to help out. They also have guitar tuition on offer, but I haven't heard any reports about the standard of teaching - the prices seem quite reasonable though so perhaps worth a go.

This shop is quite bizarre. First of all the front window is a quite a hodgepodge, from from plain…read morestupid, pink, oversized, curly Fender rip-offs that no one will ever buy (think of Salvador Dali painting a guitar or someone going crazy with the stretch tool in Photoshop) to the most gorgeous, full-on, aluminium grilled, expensive Mesa/Boogie stacks that will cripple anyone's hearing on 2, never mind 10. Then there's the maddening buzzer system, where you have to press a bell and wait to be buzzed in by a member of staff (something that would drive me crazy if I worked there). Furthermore, on this last bit, I've never seen anyone get refused entry, so what's the point of it? When you finally get inside, there's a fairly decent range of guitars, but they're all priced highly, even if they're second-hand models (and I know the mark up is huge, because the boss offers pitiful payments for goods coming in, whilst spouting some bull about electric safety certificates and the like). The counter has a poor selection of strings and pedals (although there is the odd Electro-Harmix number that's been fleeced off someone if you're lucky), whilst it also operates as a workshop for repairs of all kinds. I've never been in for repairs before, but I'm guessing it'll be just as highly priced as the stock. There are better places to go for all things axe-related.

I have dealings with Rikaxxe and found them to be nothing but helpful, well informed and friendly. If you want to go to a massive, impersonal shop and be served by surly, unhelpful teenagers who just want to sell you something and get you out of the shop as quick as they can then there are plenty of places you can go. But if you want to go somewhere where the staff, and particularly the owner himself, care about helping you find the right guitar or bit of kit for you with a good deal, then go to Rikaxxe. And by the way Craig, the buzzer system is in place for when the staff are out back in the workshop, obviously.

I can make a guitar sound alright and I'm sure if I leant on a piano it'd make a noise but it's never been my obsession. For those whom it is, this shop is for you. Row after row of sheet music take centre stage in this performance with everything from Led Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye in all sorts of instruments. Then toward the back of the shop you can find the real beauties - the saxophones and the drum kits, neatly laid out in this ample store. A column of beautiful harmonicas and flutes adorns one wall and some more percussion in another. As you approach the till expect boxes and pots of plectrums and tuners, straps and clasps. The cashier himself is music personified every part an extra stumbled in from Wayne's World. The Music Room is everything that you would it expect it to be and a little more.

They've got a good range in stock and if what you can't find what you're looking for then they're more than happy to order it in for you. It's a great place to go if you're looking for something in particular, but it's also got such a good range that it's worth going in to have a browse. At the back of the store theres a fairly decent selection of brass and woodwind instruments, as well as some digital pianos and drum kits. Certainly worth a look if you're a musician in the area.
