Met some friends there for a celebration of life of a friend who passed in February. It's a bummer when ppl you've known for over 50 yrs go long before you are ready to say goodbye. PJs is a Kirkwood hangout and has been around as long as I can remember. Good place to go for a tavern experience, and we are all Kirkwood people so we went there for that reason. Our server was very attentive. Some folks ordered lunch which looked pretty good. The dinner salads were huge... easily enough for 2! The potatoes skins were tasty (I broke down and had one though I wasn't hungry (we met at 2 and I had a late large breakfast) but the sandwiches looked good. Probably a good bar food place (burgers, etc) but definately a good watering hole! Located in old downtown Kirkwood by the train station. They also have a nice patio and outdoor sidewalk seating. I've been coming to PJs since I was in elementary school, and while it's pretty good bar food and a good spot to watch the game, there's definitely a sense of tradition and consistency. This particular day I came with my mom and we sat in the back room, where they gave their biggest tv. It was football Sunday, so it's a good spot to post up and watch. The manager ended up having to take our order because they were short staffed. We appreciated her transparency for the wait, she was super kind. I ordered a deluxe pizza and my mom ordered the wings. The pizza is good, stl style. The crust is basic but the toppings were good and plentiful! Parking can be tough since it's in downtown Kirkwood, but there is a large lot next door with lots of spaces. read more

I wanted to try this as it's across the street from a different restaurant that I frequently dine. Walking in, it looks like your typical neighborhood bar. Oldies look and feel with a lot of regulars and locals. We came on a Saturday night around 8:45 and they are open late. It was slow due to the holiday weekend and we were seated right away. Our server was friendly and very helpful. I ordered a vodka and soda which I forgot to order a water with it but she came out with water anyway. Great server as with some, you have to ask for everything. My drink had just the right amount of vodka. The food was pretty good. Fries were crispy but plain. My chicken sandwich was good but plain. I used my husband topping from his burger on my sandwich and it taste better. He said his burger was good. That have a good variety of food for everyone. If we are looking for a spot that's open late, we would come back. This just wouldn't be our first choice. Still worth a try it you are in the area she looking for reasonable priced food. read more

This is one of our very favorite joints. The service is always great. I love their salads (large enough to feed a family I swear). but tonight went a different route. We split a bacon cheeseburger with fries and an order of hot wings. They were so nice they split the burger for us. Came here with my husband when we visited St. Louis and we had a pretty good experience. When we walked in, it was pretty busy, so we had high expectations! The place is cute and small inside and everyone working there is super friendly. There was a mix of older adults and young kids working there, and no matter who we came in contact with, they were friendly and helpful. When we were seated by the host, he looked younger than 16. He was nice and asked if we preferred a booth or table and sat us in a booth. Our waitress was an older woman who was also helpful and nice. She checked in on us often, too, and consistently gave us refills on water. The place seemed clean, but our table and menus were sticky, so we asked them to wipe down the table. For dinner, I ordered the taco salad ($15). It included olives, beef, lettuce, tomatoes (which I excluded) and cheese, and came in a shell tortilla bowl, too! It was pretty good but did taste a bit plain and dry. I wish it had a bit more uniqueness to it because it was pretty bland outside of the spicy beef and wasn't anything special. It came with salsa, which helped make it a bit wetter, but it still needed additions like possibly beans, avocado or guac, or cilantro to add more flavor. Again, it wasn't bad, but it could be improved. I probably would order something different if I ever returned. My husband ordered a grilled chicken salad ($14), and he felt that was a bit plain, too. The chicken was seasoned well, but it bland ingredients were in it, such as only tomatoes, eggs, onions, and bacon. He asked for Caesar salad dressing on the side, but it didn't look or taste like it, so he asked our waitress, and she claimed it was right. To us, it looked and tasted more like a vinaigrette. Overall, it was a fine dining experience, but compared to all the other great food we ate in St. Louis, this place was just okay. I probably wouldn't go back. read more

Showed up at Mike Duffy's on St. Patrick's Day. They had a very limited menu and very few of the items were Irish. They didn't have Irish nachos, but they had queso toasted raviolis and a pretzel... very disappointing. They also had a few other things that weren't Irish. If you're gonna have a limited St. Patrick's Day menu, you think you should have all Irish food. And then our waitress informed us that ran out of corned beef so three of the four items they had that were Irish we're not available. So all they really had was shepherds pie. Awful awful planning on them. Will never show up again for St. Patrick's Day here and may never show up again. Horrible management decisions. read more

The food was really good and was prepared well, and served at a good temperature. The service was on point. Our server checked on is several times during our visit and kept our drinks full. It definitely has a bar/grill ambiance that os slightly dated. There is carpet in the dining area is worn and it looks like it has not been cleaned in some time. Cleanliness is important. Just had the worst experience here. Kaitlin was rude. Lost our ticket . We left without food after waiting 45 minutes. Also super hot inside the back dining room and could not help but notice the obvious mold growing on the water damage on the ceiling. read more

So the four of us gathered for lunch. Guys got Bison burgers. Ladies got a club and a burger. Fries were crispy. My Cole slaw was great. We had a soft pretzel for an app. The cheese sauce was melted yellow cheese. Delicious and perfect to start our meal. They were busy but not too much. They had Killian's Red Irish beer so I had to get that!! Burgers were cooked as ordered and great. Looking for a pub atmosphere with traditional foods. A solid American Pub in Downtown Kirkwood. The food is better than Mike Duffy's across the street. Try the Burgers, Wings, or Fish Sandwich. The layout is kind of disjointed - hostess stand is right in the middle of a high traffic area, but plenty of bar seats and different sections of table service. Not as upscale as Billy G's or open layout like Duffy's but all of the servers are nice and prices are reasonable. Overall, PJ's is a neighborhood joint with great food that earns my business regularly. Give them a go! read more

Visited PJ'S twice during a week long work trip. This neighborhood Tavern is in downtown Kirkwood, just outside the busy and congested areas of STL. First visit was just for happy hour drinks. I had perhaps the strongest Old Fashioned I've ever had, but I'm not complaining. The bartender was pleasant to talk to, as were the regulars at the bar, offering suggestions and making conversation. She suggested we come back for the food while we were here. We came back for lunch the next day and she was right. I had the Smokehouse Chicken Sandwich and asked for the French Onion Soup as a substitute side for an uncharge. They said that was just fine. Hubs got the Fried Chicken Sandwich and fries. Everything came out hot and delicious. Possibly one of the best onion soups I've had in a long while. My only complaint, which really isn't a complaint because we were not in a hurry, is that service on the food side is a bit slow. It's not that our server didn't want to get back to us; I could tell she had a lot of other things she was attending to that we couldn't see because she never slowed down. My wife and I were just out and about and wanted to stop somewhere for a glass of wine and a beer. I recalled a EV charging station just outside of this place so we parked, plugged in, and went inside. It wasn't too crowded when we came by. The bar was full and maybe 1 other table. We could sit where we wanted and the hostess and waitress came right over. My wife got her wine and I got my beer. Since it wasn't too crowded we could actually talk. MANY places, exp when crowded, are too loud for conversation. We also order pretzels and cheese. The drinks came back to the table quickly and shortly after the food. The pretzels were a bit hard for 'bar' ones and the cheese was, well, off a bit. It looked like something that came out of a dispenser. It is was mostly liquid with thicker parts mixed in. We decided that this would NOT be a food item we would get again. We were checked on enough to keep the beers flowing for me. My wife tends to take her time and enjoy the wine. The staff was friendly and attentive. I think we will be going back but trying something else for food. read more

We also got wings and were asked if we wanted ranch or blue cheese. Nice, considering most places bring whatever they choose for you. We had Elizabeth for our server and she was great! *Pepsi products *No noted vegan or gluten free options. But, a huge menu for your personal preference. I have lived in Kirkwood on and off 47 years and have visited PJ's Tavern just once or twice. We decided to visit today for a late lunch and we're greeted and sat quickly. The Server was attentive but not overly so. We enjoyed the potato skins for an appetizer. They were nice and crisp without being overly cooked. Some of the best anywhere. I ordered the buffalo wings with bleu cheese. They were perfectly prepared. My wife ordered a Rueben sandwich which she enjoyed. Great prices and we will return. read more

This is one of my favorite spots to get good bar food. The fries are amazing. Their sauces are the best around. Honey mustard, house Italian and avocado ranch are our favorites. Smokehouse burger, chef salad, chicken strips, potato skins, homemade soups (French onion and loaded potato are awesome), Rueben, bacon cheeseburger! I've had these all and never been disappointed. Family loves the quesadillas and the beef and brick. Overall, we've been about 30 times dine-in/takeout and had one issue (that they made right). The pretzel is just okay, bc there are so many other amazing pretzels out there it doesn't offer much. The other reviews talk about the atmosphere and the paint... who cares. Good food, and the atmosphere is what you make of it. The staff is always friendly and the people in kirkwood are the nicest. If you haven't been, go try it! read more

What is happening with service at PJs??? Tonight I saw a customer spill her drink on the booth bench and the girl cleaning swept all the ice on the carpet under booth, I hope no one sits there . PJ's is your basic tavern/sports bar. The service is friendly and the menu has everything you want in bar food. The portions are pretty generous, but the food itself is just ok. Toasted ravioli is a little light on meat filling and overall flavor. The potato skins are pretty good with a ton of cheese and bacon but would benefit from more scallions. The fries are good, even if they are a bit too salted. But the burger is average at best, dry and bland. PJ's has a bunch of TVs with sports everywhere you look. If you want some apps, a beer, and some football, it will do the trick. But if you're looking for a great meal, keep looking. read more

I had a grilled chicken salad and even though I always feel like ordering salad at a bar is risky, this one was good! It was fresh and had plenty of chicken to go with the greens. They were even able to offer romaine lettuce instead of iceberg when I asked about the type of lettuce used... Hubby had the fish sandwich with a cup of potato soup and thought it was solid. We actually only went to this place only because we tried going to Mike Duffy's but found out when we got there they were closed on Sundays. PJ's was across the street so we thought we would go ahead and try it. We are so glad we did. The hostess greeted us at the door. Service was great! We didn't have to wait long for our waitress to take our food or drink order. Food was good, and the waitress made sure to check up on us from time to time. We noticed the staff members were on the ball...plates were taken away when food was done, tables were quickly cleaned when people left, asked if you needed a refill if your soda was low, etc. , which we seem to rarely see these days when we go out to eat. Other restaurants could take lessons on how their staff could be. Prices were comparable to other similar places we have gone to eat.
