I can't say that I was originally excited to eat pizza in France, but because of time constraints on a particular day and the location of our Airbnb, it was a choice of convenience. However, it was really good! The pizze were both extremely fresh and has amazing combinations of ingredients. The ricotta was so good.. I could have eaten that on its own ( I think i may have ). Amazing pizza in the shadows of the ethereal Sacre Coeur. It's tucked into a row of quaint restaurants on a quiet side street right next to the Basilica. So whilst Montmarte, a short 10 minutes away, is a bustling town with all types of restaurants and cafes, this pizzeria feels like a nice reprise from the maddening hordes. It's an extension of the peace and calm you'd just experienced inside Sacre Coeur. While waiting for a friend, I decided to satiate cravings I've been having for more Western fare. I went with a whole 10" pie, which I thought would be too much, but it was the perfect size for a solo diner. The Margherita pie was a classic, with toppings made up of a slightly sweet tomato sauce, mozzarella and sprinkling of fresh basil. The crust was thin and well-done, reminiscent of a good NYC slice. I had no qualms about downing the whole thing myself. The herbs-infused olive oil was also fragrant and a great add-on to the pizza. Do yourself a favor and seek out this gem! read more

A tiny place that has lots of charm. The tables are small and some of the chairs too hard (no cushioning) but the staff are really friendly and take care of you well. They need to carry butter for the bread and speed up the making of the pizza--but boy is it a good pizza. The crust was perfect and the one I had with sausage and mushrooms had excellent flavor. Such a quaint little wonder. Probably no bigger than a bedroom, with seating for about 26 chairs. We stumbled upon this restaurant in 2018 while walking around Mont Marte and Sacre Coeur... and we are so glad that we did! We are planning a trip back to Paris in July 2021, and this was the very first restaurant we talked about revisiting. It's almost magical, sitting outside, and the food is outstanding. I had the pizza with scallops and pepperoni (in the US we call it pepperoni, but I cant remember if it is called the same in French). So delish! My husband had the carbonara which was also excellent. Lovely little restaurant. Only about 7 tables inside and some outside. My son (12) and I ate early for French standards (7pm) so I needn't have bothered to reserve a table in my mediocre French! We shared a small plate of delicious truffle salami as an appetizer, I had a glass of the merlot housewine which was quite good for the price. The younger waiter spoke English so my son could understand when he explained that we could choose a whole pizza or a half pizza with salad on the side. The pizzas are the traditional italian kind, with a thin crust, so if you're hungry and/or don't want any antipasti (starters), get a whole one! For me, half a pizza with a simple salad was enough since I had half a starter and also dessert! We asked for a simple margherita for my son, which was no issue. Service was pretty quick (no doubt they were happy to free up our tiny table for the real dinner run) and very friendly. The lemon dessert (top of the menu) was delicious - tart and sweet, but not too sweet. Very good value for money, and kid-friendly, esp at such an early hour. We paid €50 for two softdrinks, a glass of wine, one starter, two pizzas/salads, two desserts and a hot tea. And this, right at the foot of the Sacre-Cœur! Highly recommend. read more

Making the decision to dine near major tourist destinations can be fraught with hazards. As such, I never would have expected to find a thoroughly excellent Italian restaurant sited in the shadow of Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Pizzeria Babalou is located amongst a handful of other restaurants and shops, and at first glance there isn't a lot from the sidewalk that would set it apart from the various other restaurants in the area. Upon opening the door though, I knew that me and my friends were in for a treat. Bric-a-brac are tastefully adorned along the walls and on shelves. Seating is close and personal, just like the best true Italian restaurants. My group started our lunch off right with a superb bottle of Montepulciano from Abruzzo while we perused the menu. There are the requisite pizzas, a no-brainer of course, but Babalou also excels in pastas, which included two different raviolis of the day. Everything is hand-made with love, and the results really show. While my dining companions opted for pizza, I ordered the pesto ravioli with spinach and goat cheese. Homemade pesto is usually the best pesto, and from the bursting-at-the-seams level of flavour present in the dish, I knew it was the real deal. I also took nibbles off of my wife's order, a special pizza of the day that included a base of black truffle paste. Best pizza ever? Babalou is easily a contender for the crown. Normally a smorgasbord at this level would make dessert a distance possibility. Fortunately the hills and steps of Montmartre had made our appetites substantial, further necessitating the Nutella calzone. Yes, it's a homemade, hand-crafted calzone oozing with Nutella. The crust was cooked slightly beyond golden brown, adding a wonderful crunch to the dessert. When the cheque came, there was no need to worry, as the total for both entrees was a measly €27, a small sum for a pizza made of black truffles! The service came with a genuine smile, and for all you tourists out there, the staff is multi-lingual. While Pizzeria Babalou is a wonderful retreat from the crowds of Sacré-Cœur, the stand-out food makes it worth a visit on its own. read more

I cannot understand how this place has so many good reviews - the service was TERRIBLE and the food was mediocre at best. We ordered wine to start - no problems there. When we tried to order a pizza and salad to share, we were told we each had to order something. The explanation made no sense, but we went with the waitress' recommendation we each get a "small pizza with salad." Mistake #1. From there, we were completely ignored for 45 minutes. We finally received a bread basket after everyone else had gotten their pizza and paid their bill. No explanation, just a "sorry for the delay." When I tried to order a glass of champagne, I was told they only do bottles, despite the fact that a glass of champagne was listed as a special on the chalkboard. I was told the menu changes a lot. When I said that I didn't want anything else, all of a sudden they were alright with serving me a glass (and made a huge show of doing so). 25 minutes later and our pathetic excuses for pizzas and salads showed up. The salad was 10 pieces of arugula. The pizza was undercooked and average at best. The staff attempted to offer us coffee to make up for "the delay" but by then we were ready to be done. The ridiculous attitude from both the server and the owner was enough to put anyone off spending another minute in this place. Do NOT bother with this place. read more

The gentleman did not speak much English and my French is very basic. The woman spoke perfect English and was absolutely lovely. We ordered the Capretta Pizza and the woman suggested we order the 1/2 and get a salad on the side because it was just me and my 6 year old son, which we did and it was PERFECT. The best pizza I have ever had in my life. It was so good we went back a second time and the woman remembered us. I recommended it to everyone that asked me for restaurant suggestions. Saw reviews for this place so I had to try it out for myself. It was FANTASTIC! The walk getting there from our hotel was really nice and there are some great views of he city nearby. The restaurant was small and quaint. Staff was friendly and gave us blankets to sit outside with until our table opened up ( less than 5 min as we made a reservation online). The waitress told us the specials and explained most items in English for us. My boyfriend got the spicy sausage pizza and I got half of the ricotta pizza with the caprese salad. Everything was EXCELLENT. We both also enjoyed the spicy oil the waitress brought and we put on our pizza. For dessert we shared the tiramisu and lemon ice cream. Both were so delicious. If you are staying in Montmartre district, there are 2 restaurants you must try - Soul Kitchen and Pizzeria Babalou. Both are well priced, but more importantly, 2 of the best meals we had in Paris. You would think you were in Italy, the food at Pizzeria Babalou is so good. The trek up the Montmartre steps is worth it - we had 2 deserts to makeup for the walk. The waitress was charming, but allowed us to enjoy our meal as a couple. 50 euro bought us quite a bit - 2 1/2 pizzas with salad, 2 glasses of wine, 3 beers, and 2 deserts. The food and experience were so good, I would have paid double. Coffee and chocolate deserts are so ample throughout Paris, this restaurant has some magnificent lemon specialties - lemon meringue pie and lemon ice cream w/ limoncello. Wow! Didn't think our meal could get any better, but definitely did with these deserts. Highly recommend, truly amazing. read more

This place was a great find. We didn't have a booking on a Friday night, and so many places around Sacre Coeur were absolutely mobbed. However, our guidebook recommend this pizza place, and we managed to walk right in and get a table outside. It was very hot inside, no air con maybe, so on a warm day you'll want to sit outside. Actually, sit outside no matter what, because you will have a view of the Sacre Coeur unlike any other. As the sun set, we sat in the dark and watched the gorgeous church become illuminated, and its shimmering white presence was a perfect accompaniment to our meal. It's crazy, how big the crowds were on the steps in front of the church, and how quiet and peaceful it was at this restaurant around the side. They don't seem to have an online menu, so I can't recall what we had. But I know we found it fresh and delicious, with great toppings and a good crust. Anybody in the neighborhood should come here for a quiet meal with a gorgeous view. You can't French food every day!! read more

Exploring Sacre Coeur can really take your breath away; from those extraordinary views of the rest of the Paris below, views of the church's architecture and from the physical exhaustion of climbing up in an effort to actually see and enjoy these views. We headed to Sacre Coeur fresh off the train from London with having had maybe 30 minutes of sleep the previous night. By the time we concluded our tour of the area we were running on empty and nourishment was needed - stat. Once we spotted this restaurant right at the foot of Sacre Coeur, it was almost like seeing an oasis in the desert. Food. Please. Now. We both went for their lunch special - half of a size-able pizza and a generous serving of rocket (what they call arugula outside of the States) salad each. The pizza is eaten with a fork and knife here and it was a decent size. Pizza itself was average in taste in my opinion. The salad had that slightly bitter taste that I love about arugula with a few shavings of cheese and barely any dressing, which is how I prefer it. Complimentary bread is also served but with a spray bottle of both olive oil and balsamic vinegar requiring no extra dishes on your table when you have limited surface space. But what sticks out in my mind about this place is not the pizza but the friendly and sweet owner. She remained polite and composed despite the rude lady who sat at a nearby table (who also happened to be American) that complained her pasta didn't have enough sauce. She unabashedly made a show of running her fork through the noodles with a bulgy-eyed "seriously?!" look on her face which soon morphed to that of a pouting 6 year old child who does not want to finish up her greens at dinner. Her fork and knife ended up on her husband's (who was clearly embarrassed by her behavior and was red-faced) pizza and later asked for a to-go box to take her pasta back. She had to mention aloud that she thought she can "improve" the dish later that night meaning she probably planned to inundate the pasta with lots of salt, cheese and whatever sauce that she likes. Our encounter with the owner was more pleasant than that. She is an older lady and we found her charming and pleasant to talk to despite her limited English and our French. Although in a touristy area the restaurant wasn't as touristy as one would think. It had that slightly rustic and locals-only feel that you'd imagine in a town outside and away from the "16 million visitors per year" city that is Paris. I'd highly recommend coming by when in the area. read more

We ate at Babalou our last night in Paris mostly because our Louvre tour guide told us that we had to see the city at night from Sacre Coeur. So onto Yelp we went in search of some comfort food near the church. Babalou exceeded our expectations in many ways. First, there was a wonderfully charming, helpful American young woman who was the sole waitress. She made us feel extremely welcome, and - as lame as it sounds - it was nice to hear a friendly language for the first time in a while. Second, the pizza was not terrible. We found the crust a bit tough (which is the only thing keeping this from 5 stars) but the taste was on pointe and everything seemed very fresh. Finally, to say this place is close to Sacre Coeur is a sever understatement. From Margret Ann's seat, she could see the lit facade shining down from the top of the imposing hill. All we had to do to see the best view in Paris was climb about 50-60 steps and we were right there. It was unreal. We'd definitely recommend Babalou to friends. read more
