It is always problematical when you make the decision to go out for tea but cannot decide where you would like to eat. Such a situation I found myself in earlier this week, when catching up with the bride to be.
There is only one that place that I know, when I am unsure of where to go, Pizza Express! (I wrote that with the theme tune to Barny in my head if people hadn't gathered - anyone remember that? 'Do you know where to go when you're feeling all alone? Barney! Barney!'). It could be my age.
Anyway, enough of the crazy reminiscing talk. Yes, we decided upon the old staple that is Pizza Express, which offers good food, comfortable surroundings and value for money. The best thing about Pizza Express is the fact I know I can safely dine here, share a bottle of wine and enjoy a well portioned main meal and not have to withdraw more than £20.00. This is good because I am a student and poverty is my natural state of being. Because the main always fills me, no additional cost has to be invested in starters, side orders or dessert unless you're feeling glutinous. The only exception to the rule being the healthy option of a pizza with a hole in - I don't recommend this. I am all for nutrition and healthiness but I felt beyond dissatisfied when my pizza with the hole had been gobbled up and there was still a hollow feeling in my belly. We also drank a fair share of wine that night and we suffered the more for not having eaten properly beforehand. By the time midnight munchies (or rather early morning raiding of fridge) occurred it was all but to late. The next day when we awoke, the hangover from hell ensued. I lost a whole week I think recovering from that. I have never ordered pizza with a hole again. I implore you not to do the same.
Another tick in the box is the fact you can see into the kitchen and the chefs working. One often wonders what happens behind closed kitchen doors. Visibility is definitely a plus for me.
Personally I find the decor a little bland if not sometimes stark looking. I think the look that is trying to be achieved is clean/ contemporary/ practical for a chain restaurant and it is not an unpleasant ambiance. Perhaps I am biased, I would always veer towards a dining interior that had warmer shades on the wall and an open fire, maybe even carpet but not chintzy.
The place always has a good few people in, not so many you feel crowded but enough so that you don't feel conspicuous which adds to an atmosphere and, I guess, makes it a bit more cosy. My only heed, be aware of children and birthday parties. This leads to a dining experience consisting of noise and screaming.
The building is on the corner of Lord Street and is completely glass fronted. This is nice for looking out onto the street and the space is filled with light and it does feel very airy. It is also nice to dine and see the onset of dark and gaze out at passers by on the street. However, the flip side of this is that everyone can look in and watch you dine.
My overall experiences of Pizza Express have, on the whole, been positive. I would advise anyone unsure of where to eat to go and give the place a visit. Its a social place not a romantic place (if you intend to wine and dine, celebrate an anniversary or its a first date - don't go) and the staff are attentive, competent and pleasant. I cannot help but leave a small tip they are so nice. Pizza Express ticks a lot of boxes and I don't think you could ask more from a quick fix and relatively inexpensive meal out. Oh, I would add here that I have known them to do promotional offers and I would look out for these. I think they advertise in the paper - deals such as buy one meal and get the second free. read more
