The game had just started when we arrived. It was a playoff game, so it was packed. We got tickets at the gate for $15 each for left field, the only option available. There isn't a great way to get around the stadium. We walked in front of everyone in the stands and happened to run into Rawhide, their mascot! After a quick selfie, we found ourselves in the grass/dirt to get to our seats. I regretted my flat sandals. We sat in the bleachers out in left field. We could see and hear everything. The game was low scoring but entertaining. The announcer had events between innings for the kids etc and plenty of fun songs and sound effects. Players were hitting foul balls into the stands and parking lot. No one got hurt but I bet some cars were dented. They had chosen the designated beer hitter - a player on the opposite team. When he was up to bat, if he struck out, beers were half off for the rest of the inning! It happened at least twice. Food looked pretty good. They had a local restaurant set up under an easy up, cooking. It was called Jacob's and they have a restaurant one mile south of the stadium (Jacob's Restaurant). We left after the kids raced the players through the field which was about the 7/8th inning. I think the stompers lost as they were trailing for awhile. Bathrooms were in an elevated trailer, clean, air conditioned, separate men/women. I can see why the locals enjoy the games. It was fun. I just wish they had a better sidewalk around the field. And Rawhide's costume needs a good cleaning. Poor guy smells like several summers. Overall great value and a good time.

No outside food or drinks are allowed so you're kinda stuck. I don't even know how to rate this place so let's keep the 4 stars going simply because I love baseball. HP Pavilion (7:30 p.m.): My dad and I went to the game on Saturday (San Jose played the Utah Blaze). It was at least the 6th SaberCats game that I've been to. As usual, we saved money by parking nearby (it's interesting how many houses are just across the street from HP Pavilion- a house a block away is now up for sale). When we arrived, my dad let himself be frisked. It was comical (he just walked over to one of the guys and raised his arms- I briefly wondered if he had done something in the past that I was unaware of). I had about as many items on me, but just walked right up to the doors. The edges of the main stairs currently feature some cool images of the San Jose Sharks (it's sad that they just got eliminated from the playoffs). We had great seats (we were 10 rows back, and were only blocked off from seeing kicks go through the left uprights), and our tickets were just $9 each (my dad took advantage of a promotion). The guy to my left was annoying (he went to the game with his dad too, and I wish his dad had been sitting next to me). He had some booming claps (he almost made me go deaf), and he was too wound up early on (he clapped over every little thing). Only 2 vendors were around (I'm glad that we weren't hungry- only a few kiosks were open too). One sold cotton candy, and the other sold Dippin' Dots (Banana; Chocolate; Rainbow). I was tempted to buy some, but didn't. The woman who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" was pretty fine. She also had a beautiful voice (I actually noticed). T&A: "Stop teasing me!" (what a guy behind us kept saying to the young woman who goes out on the field to signal the beginning and end of commercial breaks). The woman is "too skinny" for my dad's taste, and I think the woman the current one replaced was hotter. It's cute, though, the way the new woman dances. You can tell that she has a lot of fun during games (the other woman was more serious). The SaberKittens were also standing very close to us, but I didn't actually look at them much. With a few exceptions, the women aren't that hot this year. The Kiss Cam action kind of sucked. Too many old couples were featured, and this one guy was clueless as to what he was supposed to do until the camera started to cut away. A ton of penalties were called. This guy and his sons couldn't make up their minds: "Hey refs! You suck!" "Hey refs! You're great!" o_O A Utah wide receiver made a "flying catch over the boards," and another one went over the boards a few minutes later. It was also memorable when San Jose defensive back Clevan Thomas made a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. The SaberCats normally draw over 10,000 fans (the attendance on Saturday was 8,438). Still, it often got very loud inside. Some fans also did some crazy dances. A few guys even took off their shirts ("No, no. Put your shirts back on. Please."). I kind of agree with another reviewer ("no more cowbell!"). I'm used to it, but some fans bring cowbells and ring them too fuc---- much. You might think that you're at a farm. Free!: The SaberCats have always treated their fans well. This is what was given away during the game: -3 footballs (fans get to keep balls that wind up in the stands). A guy at the end of our row caught the ball that was thrown away at the end of the game. -A whole row got Lillie Mae's "famous" BBQ sauce. -Another row got Buffalo Wild Wings (I think this occurred when a guy threw a football between the uprights- he had 2 tries, but was good in his 1st attempt). -Another row got Round Table Pizza. -Yet another got In-N-Out food (in most cases, vouchers are given out only). The crowd went crazy, by the way, when the logo was flashed. -As usual, some T-shirts were shot or launched into the stands. -5,000 fans got a Program/Green Night Reusable Shopping Bag (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-jose-sabercats-san-jose?select=1VBDoLhLt0EYFkHTGFJitQ#yAaOuPNkLRMGMNuEwLf6oQ). The action was hard to follow (the announcer had to keep turning his attention from one side of the field to the other), but kind of exciting. What is different is that the general manager and head coach are both women. The team took their maiden voyage last week and was treated to rousing support by locals. The demographics are a bit different from NBA team but the enthusiasm reminds me of those Warrior fans from the mid to late 2000's who stuck with the home team through thick and thin... and there was a lot of thin, trust me. There were over 18,000 in attendance for the regular season home opener on a Tuesday night. Many of my seat neighbors are also Warrior season ticket holders from varying locations in the arena. It is great to see this fanbase rewarded with its own team, only the 2nd in California now (the Sacramento team folded several years ago). The WNBA with its roster of star power with Caitlyn Clark, Paige Bueckers fresh out of college, the stars from the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty, which include Sabrina Ionescu, an East Bay native has raised its popularity exponentially. Looking forward to seeing how they gel this season and it'll fun to see the local fanbase support them. The crowd is very similar to the We Believe fanbase in Oakland except the cheers are an octave higher. The ticket prices are prohibitively less expensive than Warrior tickets so you'll definitely see a more diverse audience at games. We were fortunate to experience the 1st win for this team that's making history with every achievement. Go catch a game and you'll know what the buzz is about... who knows, if you're a hoops fan like me, you might be hooked too.

Then theres the coaching.. yikes, talk about not caring and just throwing the kids out there, no positions are given to these kids. "Find a guy" and guard them status. The practices are way too short to help the not so good players get better. If your child isn't too good then they will ride the bench every other quarter when its gametime. The attention to helping these kids get better just isnt there. If you're the coaches kid you get full time to play. Most coaches let their own kid pretty much run the show. They seem to always be the ball hogs, taking way too many shots! Missing enough to pull them out but that rarely ever happens. Guy running the league is as smug and cocky as they come. Its obvious a side hustle to supplement his income. 250$ per kid @ about 100 kids per session the guy is winning for sure! A new organization headed by the folks at Leonhardt Vineyards, putting together twelve teams from…read morecities and towns in Sonoma and Napa counties in a professional/semi-pro old fashioned, wood bat baseball league. It is starting off as a collection of college players, former minor league players, and older players continuing their baseball playing, this league will probably/hopefully evolve into a summer league/training ground format for future major leaguers. From what I saw at the games, it looks like there are some very talented pitchers in the league this year, as well as some sluggers. The first games were yesterday at Cardinal Newman High School, which is a very nice new field with some bleacher seats and plenty of room to bring your own picnic chairs, blankets, etc. On a hot day there is not much shade, so bring some shade if you'll need it. Other games will be on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings at different fields around the area, with triple headers at C.N. High School each Saturday. Since it is new, some things are still in development, but it looks like it is sure to be a fun time, and for very reasonable prices. Most of the proceeds from the very reasonable ticket, food, and drink prices will be donated to charities. Let's Go Healdsburg Owls!
