Pitt Street Pharmacy is a historic pharmacy that opened in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina in 1937. It was founded by Washington "Wattie" Zeigler, RPh. More than just a place to get medicine, the pharmacy became a local gathering spot. Pitt Street is the center of Mount Pleasant's "old village" district, and the pharmacy became the heart. A soda fountain was added in the 1950s, and the pharmacy soon became a hangout known for serving up ice cream treats and their famous grilled cheese sandwiches. Pitt Street Pharmacy is also one of the oldest pharmacies in the Charleston area to practice compounding: creating customized medications to meet the specific needs of each customer. Today, in the era of mass-produced medications, only a handful of pharmacies still practice compounding. Kim "Kimbo" Richardson, RPh purchased the pharmacy in 1996. Upon his retirement in 2022, the pharmacy was taken over by Brandi Sherbert, who has worked there since her final year in pharmacy school. My family and I visited Pitt Street Pharmacy this past summer while we were visiting family in town. We had checked out Guerin's Pharmacy, which is the oldest pharmacy in South Carolina. We liked it there, but our cousins told us about Pitt Street and said it was even better than Guerin's. They weren't wrong. The place was like one of the old-fashioned pharmacies that you see in an old movie or a movie set in a bygone era. In fact, a scene was even filmed here for the 2004 film "The Notebook". The old soda fountain was beautiful, complete with classic red stools. We decided to sit at a booth. For lunch, my wife ordered a "Chicken Salad Sandwich" (chicken and chopped celery), our older son had a "Hot Dog" (beef frank with ketchup), and I had the "Linda's Club" (3 Layer sandwich with egg salad, lettuce, tomato, ham, cheese, mayo). We couldn't say no to some ice cream treats made with locally-produced Wholly Cow Ice Cream. I had a "Mint Chocolate Chip" shake, our older son had a "Double Oreo" shake, and my wife had a "Root Beer Float". It was so cool to step back in time at Pitt Street Pharmacy! We'll definitely visit again on a future trip to Charleston!

M A D D Y prepared us simple sandwiches (1 chicken salad! and 1 ham) while my grands sat on vinyl red 50s stools spooning Superman ice cream from kiddie cups love an establishment doing double-duty Pitts is a real pharmacy M A D D Y kindly redirected some kids from 'watch me get one of those (toy capsules) for free' ...they courteously redirected and ordered their lunches Great l'l pop-in ...probably wouldn't seat more than 20ish ppl. I believe 6 stools. We took 1 sandwich to-go. air-conditioned.

We went in this business to get out of the horrendous heat( 113 w/humidity). But to my surprise this turned out to be a quaint really cute soda fountain and/or an old fashioned pharmacy straight out of the 1950-1960's. They serve egg salad sandwiches, hamburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs , milk shakes, malted milkshakes, and had a large assortment of ice cream. You can sit at the counter on the old round leather top stools that swivel around in circles or you can sit at one of the wooden booths The lady with the mermaid green & blue hair was a complete angel and knows everything about Mount Pleasant and Charleston. Ask her anything and she will direct you to the right place. K had a delicious chocolate milkshake and I just had a coke and a few bottles of water. Apparently this cute place has quite a large local following and is pretty busy on BBC a regular basis. The food that I saw them prepare looked & smelled delicious.?The next time we're in Charleston, Im definitely going here for lunch

I was over in Old Mt P and recalled that I always heard about the old-school pharmacy with a sod fountain etc... I figured I'd go check it out. I love the old neon sign out front and it really does feel like stepping back in time when you go inside. I didn't particularly need anything so I was just stopping by to check it out. Everyone seemed very friendly and I found it interesting to walk around and check out the old artifacts and nostalgia items in the cases around the store. Before leaving, I figured I had to check out the soda fountain. I walked over and sat at the counter. Turns out they have a whole menu of lunch options too. I wasn't sure what to get and asked the server what the better house made soda's were and she kind of had an attitude of indifference like she had never been asked before. I settled on a coke float to which she replied that they were out of vanilla ice cream... Is that even possible? She let me know that the Superman Ice Cream was vanilla just with colors added. She mentioned while she was putting it together that it's made with their premium vanilla and it was actually delicious as long as you can get past the mind tricks or red, yellow, and blue ice cream not tasting like red, yellow, and blue flavors. Although the waitress was a bit off-putting at first, she warmed up to chatting with us. We were only there for our float and then they were about to close so we headed out. I'd like to come back and try the diner food too.

In search of nostalgia? Look no further. This blast-from-the-past pharmacy gives you all the good feels. Belly up to the counter, take a seat on a rotating stool and enjoy the simplicity of a hot dog. Or grilled cheese. Or hamburger (although I'm not quite sure where they grill these burgers because I think they just re-heat them when ordered.) Oh, yes, ice cream too!!! We needed lunch and thought it would be fun to check out this spot in the quaint and beyond charming area of Old Village in Mt P. If you love good architecture, the surrounding homes will not disappoint. And if you love a taste of history, the Pitt St Pharmacy is fantastic. After we noshed on our hot dogs and bags of chips, we wandered around the actual store. Its small. And they do have pharmacy items, as well as some touristy/local garb and fun little toys. Along the side walls in the pharmacy area, you'll find museum-like display cases with vintage medical and pharmaceutical items. If you are in the area, say, taking a stroll down the Pitt St bridge, do yourself a favor and duck into this shop for a moment and check it out.
