Why you should bring a towel with you...
    Sara A.

I take our dog Willie to the Pitner Dog Park frequently. There are two gated dog play areas that are adjacent to each other. The big dog (or little dogs with big attitudes) park has about two acres of land and the small dog side has about one acre. Both sides have plenty of space for the dogs to play and shady wooded areas for you or your pet to keep cool as well as benches for the dog owners. There is a dog water fountain and hose to rinse off your dog if they get overheated and dirty. Each area has "poop-mit" stations providing bags for owners to pick up after their pets. However, I recommend bringing your own bags because they run out frequenly. Next to the dog park is a small playground, picnic shelter, and restroom facilities. Even though Pitner is farther from our house I have found that the dog owners and dogs who frequent Pitner Park to be more laid back and friendly than the people who go to Swift Cantrell. My dog loves to Play! Play! Play! and the dogs at Swift Cantrell just seem to be too sedate and the owners are too uptight about letting the dogs play...Pitner seems to attract a wide variety of dogs - Yorkies and other teacup sized pups, to mid size mutts, to larger dogs like Greyhounds and Labs. As many times as I have been there I have never seen a full out dog fight. The dogs are well behaved and I have met some very nice dog lovers there. NOTE: The water fountain/hose tends to encourage a muddy spot in the big dog park so I highly recommend bringing a towel with you so you can dry off your pup! (See pics!)

Safe place to let the dogs run. Lots of shade and seating areas and all the dog owners are respectful of the others

And the wooded area with trails INSIDE the dog park is a HUGE plus for us.

To my understanding, this park connects to another one, but we didn't check the other side out. It seemed to be well maintained overall. The bathrooms were clean and kept up, the park and pavilions were in good condition overall, and there was no major construction or anything going on which was nice. Someone was setting up for a birthday party or function of some sort, so we left a little earlier than planned, but you could definitely spend a decent amount of time here and just relax and enjoy the quiet. There are views of the river over the bridge and a bunch of different trails one could take. My clients enjoyed the little free library that many of the parks around here have. It's to the left, right off the main parking lot when you drive in. We borrowed a few books and now we can return some one day to this location and others. Overall, everyone had a great time and we would definitely come back here for book club or just to walk around in the fresh air again.

The grass and area are very well taken care of. When I went, the grass was low and I didn't see one single piece of trash anywhere. The trail was great and expanded into other areas I wasn't so sure about. All in all it's a clean and safe park that I would highly recommend and go to more.

I will be honest, this will not be a good dog park for everyone because... The Pro's: *Plenty of space for the dogs to run and get their zoomies out. *Trash cans, Benches for seating, and A doggy water fountain to drink from are available. *Very clean for the most part. You're not stepping over a bunch of poop piles pet parents didn't get up! The Con's: *There's no "Small dog/Large dog" separation. So if your tiny dogs can't hang with the big dogs, this won't be a great place to come! *There were a TON of dogs... when we visited there were at least 20-30 dogs easily. So if you're dog doesn't like being in a big "dog crowd" this won't be a great place for you in the peak times... you may have to beat the crowd by coming early or something but after noon 5ish was super crowded. *There are some imperfections in the landscaping. There are areas where there's a little rocky and just watching the dogs run I was really holding my breath that none of them pulled anything, slid, or stepped too hard on a rock of some sort! It could get ugly real quick! So if the owners out there please patch the area by the sitting stone wall up with grass. Other than those few things it was a great time. The entire park is beautifully kept and a great addition to Smyrna area! We will be back!

There are fairly large patches of dirt/mud where the seated areas (3 benches in the park) are. You can see areas where they have tried putting fake grass down to spark growth but it may take a while (I'm not an expert on this). I can see where this can be muddy if you go after it rained so beware of that. They do have a water fountain and it appears as if other owners have left water bowls there for regular visitors. Some of the owners know each other so that's always a plus which has a true dog lover 'community' feel to it. Deducted a star because the mosquitos were RAMPANT!! (Not sure if anything can be done but sheesh!) the other star was for the fake grass patches. Decent dog park with potential...
