I recently had my 2006 Mariah SX/19 worked on by these guys. They came with a recommendation from someone that had work done there prior to this. I trust that individuals judgment and went with it. I dropped the boat off, discussed with the owner what I wanted done, tune-up, oil change, timing checked etc., basic stuff. I also had a leaking carburetor and asked to have it rebuilt as well. After two weeks of waiting, I finally contacted Pit Stop Marine and asked if the boat was done. I was told the carburetor was rebuilt and he was waiting for an ignition switch as that was the problem with most issue with performance. I picked the boat up the next morning and was billed $360 for a carburetor kit install and an ignition switch...uuh what about the rest of the work...never completed. I then took the boat and the family went to the beach for a week. Day 1 on the water: Started out and boat ran like s***. I thought it was just in need of running some so I idled away from dock and rode the waterways near Snow's Cut Carolina Beach. 30 minutes later I was drifting with the current and fortunately forced ashore by the water. Two hours later I got the boat cranked and abruptly put it on the trailer. I took the boat back to our beach villa and hooked a hose to it and ran it for at least an hour. Day 2 on the water: Lets keep it short here...same issue but this time I stayed near the dock. Once we returned to home to Dunn NC, I called and asked for it to be looked at again. I finally got it in and they spent a astonishing 15 minutes with it hooked to a hose pipe and told me I needed a BRAND NEW CARBURETOR....WTF! They would not even entertain my request to look at the carburetor again for perhaps an issue with rebuild kit or float adjustment. The mechanic just stated "Yep you got a carb issue for sure" I asked if the carb was soaked in carb cleaner as it should be when rebuilt and the answer was no. Why not? Apparently it was in good shape if it didn't need the soaking. If it wasn't...why rebuild it with a $40 rebuild kit and replace my marine ignition switch with one from NAPA for a car and charge me $360. Owner stated that he cannot have his mechanics tied up for two or three hours on it and possibly have the same issue. Problem is this...you got my money and you don't want to waste time on a job that you will not make ANY MORE money on. When asked if the carburetor was completely rebuilt, he didn't remember. Stated "I think we only replaced the top gasket where the leak was, but maybe we did...I don't remember." I looked at him in amazement and asked why so much if he only replaced the top gasket? He then proceeded to tell me that "it must have been rebuilt...I'm pretty sure it was." So now the owner recommends purchasing a new carburetor at only $750-$800 from him and that would end my issues. He did at least tell me he would knock off the $40 charge for the rebuild kit that he didn't use and maybe some of the labor charges. Listen folks....you can do what you want with what you have I understand that. I am not looking for free boat repair...I am looking for quality workmanship for my money. This guy just lost a good customer that would have brought him all his work in the future, he lost the customer that recommended him who is my brother with a 23' Sea Ox Center Console, and he will not get any recommendation from me to any of my boater friends and every chance I get I will spread the word on his workmanship. I feel so strong about this that I would not let him touch my boat now if he contacted me. Hell he even told me to send him the part # and model # of the carburetor and boat that he just worked on...didn't you just work on the boat and order parts? Yes but I will have to go through all my invoices to locate yours, easier if you email the info to me. That was, in my mind, his way of telling me "I got your money, I don't have time to mess with it now." If you have read all this I hope you take your water craft somewhere else to get it serviced.
