I love the history of this historic building, it is very important for people to understand history to know what sacrifices where made so that we could enjoy the lives that we have today. To learn of what this building meant to the local people and to know of the culture that it created into todays world is amazing, one of the historians shared the history of how the term rolling out the red carpet was originated here.

Father daugher dance is always fun for the whole family! The girls hangout with their dad and the boy and I spend the day walking the town.

First let me tell you all the reasons this charming place lost a star: uncomfortable chairs, poor sound. Now let me tell you all the reasons you must go and support this historical gem: you truly step back in time; you pass the exact location where tickets were sold and sidearms were turned in over a hundred years ago; you feel as if you are at the "Horse Shoe Review" Disneland; you can get a drink at the bar downstaris and walk upstairs with your beverage; the bathrooms are clean; the show had some great actors, terrific costume and set and the funds go toward reviving this sweet location. Oh yes, and let's not forget...you get to walk the street of Virgina City!

In reading the other reviews on the Piper's Opera House, I have come to figure out that each review is based on each individual experience (one was a wedding, the other a concert of sorts, etc...thus reflecting how was the staff, what did the chairs look like, how were the accoustics, etc). My sole reason for specifically seeking out the Piper's Opera House was to take witness of the building that is a historical piece of Nevada history resurected in 1885. And even more specific than that, take witness to one of only three original opera house curtains that remain in our state from before the turn of the century. So for my reasons of going, this place was a historical gem. Patrick (the local historian, caretaker of the opera house and general great Nevadan who appreciates the history of this part of our state) was kind enough to meet us at a predetermined time in January to open up the Pipers Opera House so we couuld take a peak. Did you know that there are only three opera houses that remain in the state...one in Eureka, one in Pioche and one in Virginia City. The Pipers Opera House served as one of the centers of cultural activity in the Comstock and the West. Though several of the theatres that came before this one in 1885 burned in either the Great Fire of 1875 or after, this one remains. If you have some understanding of these historic buildings, you will know what to expect. In addtion to the orgininal ticket window remaining intack and the large theatre with balcony seats in the back, there are lots of photos, journals, books and such displayed on the walls and in cases about the property. Pot belly stoves, box seating sections of years gone by, an old Heintzman & Co piano and really great Maude Adams photos and such (a stage star of 100+ years ago). Although the opera curtain we were seeking is in troubling disrepair and could not be unfolded for us to see, there is a great picture of it near the entrance of the theatre to observe what it looks like. The place is old...because it is! Advance about 130 years from when it was built and this is why I say it is old. As for having an event there, just know this. 130 years with some renovation, restoration and rehabilitation continue here and there, things are going to have that feel and are not going to feel or sound like Rockefeller Center. But if you are a history buff, do yourself a favor and take a pop in if you can to discover this little gem.

I remember taking the mine tour and being amazed that it is a part of our local history. I met some friends on a chilly Friday evening for drinks and karaoke. There was quite the crowd already at 8pm and I could tell it was a popular local watering hole. All the patrons were singing along with each karaoke guest and having a great time. The bartender was a very nice guy that was doing a great job keeping up with everyone despite being the only one behind the bar that night. We made sure to tip him well. He was slinging fresh cocktails, fresh draft pours, and some ready to drink cocktails. A couple of us put our names and song choices in for karaoke, the DJ had pretty much everything available to him. The songs ranged from classic rock, classic country, modern rock, modern country, 80's chart toppers, and some obscure songs that a number of locals got pumped up to hear! I got up to belt out my raspy rendition of The Promise, it was fun to get to 'perform' in front of a crowd again. A couple others in my group sang their hearts out as well. We will be back soon!

We asked for a refund and the person we spoke to said we would be refunded the next day and that the owner would call, so we drove all the way back down the mountain and went home. The next day we called and they said the fridge making noise was not a good enough reason for a refund. It was so loud and we were told we were getting refunded. We asked why the cleaning staff didn't let them know that there was an issue, and she said the housekeeper hadn't been there for a week. Shouldn't they check the place before renting it out if it's been locked up in the winter for a whole week? If we knew we weren't going to get a refund, we would have tried something else but I think we were told this to get us to leave. So disappointing and sad. We were very respectful and told them immediately that there was a problem. Listen to this video! You can barely hear us talk. It was impossible to stay there.

When we arrived for our reservation, we noticed that the parking lot was almost completely empty. The empty parking lot matched the buffet when we walked inside. Unfortunately, the staff said that was the last of the food and they were not putting any more out. What they did have left, was warm at best and was mediocre flavor. The so-called sweet potato casserole was an abomination to put it nicely. I lived in Alabama for five years, and my husband was born and raised in Alabama. Neither one of us could swallow one bite. They tasted like they were made with chunky peanut butter. The staff was the best part of the evening. They were bubbly and friendly. We will definitely give Gold Hill another shot but we will definitely pass on any of the buffet style dinners in the future.

Our group booked months in advance and responsibly kept the restaurant updated as our party size changed, which the staff appreciated. We were eager to attend and had been looking forward to the evening, especially once the special holiday menu was released. Unfortunately, the prix fixe menu was not published until just days before New Year's Eve. It was a six-course, classic French-style menu with wine pairings at $150 per person. While the menu sounded interesting, nearly every course was meat-based, with the exception of the salad and dessert. We had one vegetarian in our group, so I immediately called to ask about accommodations. I left multiple messages (including on the private number provided for event coordination), but never received a callback prior to the holiday. Given the cost and formality of the meal, this lack of communication felt unprofessional and disappointing. On the night of dinner, our table was ready, and we were seated promptly. Service overall was attentive and friendly, though not without flaws. Despite asking for water multiple times throughout the evening, I never received any and ultimately had to get my own from the Delta Saloon bar next door. As for the food, the quality was mixed and the portions were extremely large--so much so that most of us could not finish courses four through six and took food home. While generous portions aren't a bad thing, the overall heaviness of the meal made it difficult to enjoy the full experience. Highlights included the Niçoise salad, which was beautifully plated and delicious, and the bone marrow, which was rich and well-served as a shared dish. The foie gras was tasty but overwhelmed by an excessive amount of fig jam, throwing off the balance and making an already rich dish even heavier. The sole with hollandaise was a major disappointment. The fish was mushy and completely drowned in an unusually spicy hollandaise that overpowered the dish. I barely touched it. By the time the beef bourguignon arrived, I was already uncomfortably full, though what I did taste was good. Dessert was crêpes suzette, which I had never had before. While interesting, it was extremely sweet and saturated in butter--two bites were more than enough. One particularly baffling moment was the bread service: butter was served with olive oil poured directly over it. This combination was unnecessary and unappealing--one or the other would have sufficed. Financial transparency was another major issue. During wine service, our server continued refilling glasses. When one of the paired wines ran out, she casually replaced it with another Sauvignon Blanc without mentioning that it would be an additional charge. When the bill arrived, we were shocked to see $20 per glass added for this wine. This was never communicated, and given the menu advertised the dinner as "all inclusive," this felt inappropriate. Additionally, gratuity was added automatically, which is fine--but should have been clearly stated upfront. To make matters worse, a 3% credit card processing fee was added without any prior notice. For a table of 20 at this price point, it's unreasonable to expect guests to pay in cash or be surprised by hidden fees. By the end of the night, each guest paid $210 or more, depending on extra wine charges. Our vegetarian guest was charged $75 for three simple dishes and unlimited beer (since she doesn't drink wine), plus gratuity--an amount that felt excessive for what was provided. Ultimately, while some dishes were enjoyable, the meal was overwhelmingly rich, poorly communicated, and riddled with unexpected charges. I ended up with a stomachache severe enough to leave the New Year's Eve festivities early. Our group visits Virginia City every New Year's Eve. Last year we dined at the Gold Hill Hotel and had a wonderful meal with clear pricing and no surprises. Next year, we'll be returning there--or opting for a more casual, reliable spot like Red Dog or the Palace. I would strongly recommend The Sawdust Corner improve transparency around pricing and fees, publish special menus earlier, and consider offering a regular menu alongside prix fixe options. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not return.

The decor definitely fit the name, and the staff passed the vibe check. Greeted immediately and sat at a sizable table, I noticed plenty of seating availability; however, space was rather tight with regard to table placement. We found the menu to be extensive and combed through the plethora of choices before landing on our final decisions. Always eager to try new things, I noticed there were quite a few specialty cocktails, including spiked milkshakes. I opted for the Vanilla Kahlua, and I would do it all over again! The milkshake was blended to perfection, smooth with a little razzle-dazzle you didn't know you needed. The kids opted for chocolate milkshakes they loved and rated 10/10. Very much like our other dining experiences, the kids settled on chicken tenders and fries while we, on the other hand, chose to explore our options. We started off with chilli cheese fries along with spinach and artichoke dip served with house-made tortilla chips. The portions for both appetizers were well-sized and delicious. We managed to get quite the cheese pull with the chilli cheese fries, and the house-made tortilla chips were most definitely worth writing home about; they were perfectly sized, light, and airy with an excellent amount of crisp that added texture to the flavorsome spinach and artichoke dip. For our entrees, he ordered the bacon egg and cheese burger with fries; there was an option for a turkey Reuben; however, I'm not a fan of sauerkraut, so I politely requested a turkey Rachel, and although it wasn't an option on the menu, they obliged much to my heart's delight! It's the little things Of course, the food did not disappoint! My sandwich was toasted impeccably with the right amount of butter melted, offering a decadent crisp that merged nicely with fillings making up my sandwich. Truthfully, I was beyond impressed with the aesthetic of the establishment, the services provided, and how flavorful the food was. The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable, and engaging, which made our experience even more memorable, so much so that we eagerly anticipate our next visit.
