Bland, bland, bland. I've lived in the BX, been to Puerto Rico, and had homemade Spanish food, and the dish I had here pales in comparison. I ordered the ropas viejas ($8.50+ tax weekly special), since you can't really go wrong with that. But they proved my wrong. The steak was bland, the beans were bland, and the white rice was decent. Also, the servings were smaller than expected. It's like they forgot to add the Adobo and sazon! Clearly, abuela is not in this kitchen. I'm quite surprised at the lack of flavor since it's run by Latinas in the front at least. Whoever is in the kitchen definitely isn't putting any Latin love in these meals. The specials are generally under $10, while most other normal menu items are over $11. Which, for the quality and serving size, makes them over priced. You get a whole lot of rice, and little of everything else. (Check the image of my to go meal to see). So I'm not sure how they get a lot of 5 stars reviews, unless it's from Americans who haven't had the real thing or perhaps other dishes are better. But I'm hesitant to try anything else after this disappointment. If you just want a simple breakfast that may be safer. For me, this was 2-star Spanish cuisine at best.

A sorry looking steak sandwich .

This is what you get for $11.60 at Pio Pio. Over cooked flavorless streak strips, frozen French fries that taste like they just came out the freezer . Don't go here if your in the mood for a steak sandwich.

Delicious food, and great service. I usually do take out but the ambience seems nice also.

Good flavor. Quick counter service food but there are also seats. You absolutely cannot beat the prices either.

We came on a Friday evening and were pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too crowded. The…read morerestaurant easily accommodated to a large group, making it a great choice for group dinners. The atmosphere was cozy with dim lighting, and although the restaurant was lively, the noise level was just right for conversation. Service was friendly and attentive, and all of our dishes arrived quickly and at the perfect temperature. The octopus and seafood paella were the standout of the night--perfectly cooked, tender, and packed with flavor. The sangria was also refreshing and paired well with the meal. It was nice that they gave out a shot of drink on the house at the end. Overall, it was a great dining experience with good food, great service, and a comfortable atmosphere. Definitely a spot I'd visit again.

A Decent Backup Plan When Brunch Plans Fall Through…read more A friend and I had planned to go somewhere else for brunch, but brunch service had already ended by the time we arrived. Since it was pouring rain and we didn't want to give up our parking spot, we looked for somewhere within walking distance and ended up at Lola Tapas Bar. It turned out to be a decent spontaneous find! We ordered empanadas with chimichurri sauce to start. My friend had the paella, while I ordered the steak and eggs with avocado. Overall, it was a perfectly okay experience. The food did what it needed to do, and we enjoyed having somewhere to go when our original plans fell through. However, nothing about the meal or the location really stuck with me afterward. It's not that anything was particularly horrible; it just wasn't the kind of place that makes you want to plan another visit. I'd consider it a convenient option if you're nearby, but I personally wouldn't go out of my way to return. Sometimes a restaurant is simply a place you try once, enjoy well enough, and move on from. That's how I feel about Lola Tapas Bar.

The rice was also very delicious. Beans were very good and perfect consistency! The fruit juices were very good. My whole party each got a different flavor and we all very much liked them. Staff were friendly and quick to seat us. We unfortunately did have an issue with one of the original meals (the ropa vieja), and the server was quick to switch the meal for another and help us with this. Place is cute but crowded inside, so we opted to sit outside. Very cute seating with shade on the side tables. Prices were moderate for the food, nothing to complain about. Parking in the area is hard. It's an overpopulated town with street parking that is always full. If you do find street parking, walk down the whole block and read signs, they have odd street cleaning hours and signs are typically posted at the beginning of the street so you could miss it. I'd highly recommend this place!

It's located right across the street from a large park and the area is very lively and family oriented. The service is consistently outstanding, the food is also fresh every time. The menu is so expensive there's a little something for everyone. And the drinks are always great. Reservation can be made, but we almost always get a table when walking in. They sing happy birthday to you with instruments, making it a great place for a birthday celebrations. My favorite dishes: - empanadas (chicken or guava/cheese), the hot sauce on the side is SO good - pork tamale - garlic shrimp (comes with soft bread for dipping) - pitcher of white passion fruit sangria (way better than getting individual glasses) - skirt steak/churrasco - chicharron de pollo (crispy, juicy chicken bites)

3.5 stars I was in…read morethe mood for a new dinner destination, so we decided to make a reservation at Rumba Cubana's Jersey City location. I had walked by the place in the past and noticed that they had a really nice patio, and I had hoped to sit out there on the beautiful evening, but it was simply too packed when we arrived. Instead, we were taken to a spacious table inside, which still had a great atmosphere with fun music and a general buzz in the air. Our server was nice, but approached us way too quickly to take our order. We rushed to put in our beverage requests, but noted that we would need much more time to study the vast food menu. I ordered some sort of mezcal and passion fruit cocktail, which was very good and not nearly as sweet and full of juice as it looked. I also tried a sip of my companion's Old Fashioned, which used quite a few bourbons, making it very strong. It had a nice cherry sweetness to it, though. When we were finally ready to select our food items, we decided to start with bowls of their "Mama Fela's Chicken Soup". For $4, we were expecting small cups of broth, but the portion was much more generous. The soup was very flavorful and included chunks of spiced chicken on its bone, small cobs of corn, and riced noodles. Though it was enjoyable, it was also very greasy, and you could see the dots of oil throughout the broth. When our server came to clear the plates to make room for our main courses, she did a doubletake to inspect the knife that had been at my place-setting. I had initially thought that the blade had some sort of pattern on it, but she caught the fact that it was actually dirty. When I looked closer, I noticed a shoe print on it, which was so gross. Thankfully, she went to replace it, though I made her also bring me a new fork and napkin, as the two pieces of silverware had been wrapped together in the sheet of cloth. In terms of the entrees, my partner had only positive things to say about his Ropa Vieja, and I concurred that my simply grilled Seabass with olive oil, white wine, and garlic was fantastic. Though the fish was prepared in a very simple manner, it was seasoned and executed with perfection. Both of our meals came with our choice of a single side dish. While my companion liked his rice and black beans, I found my seasoned vegetables to be way to greasy. The medley of cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, peppers, onions, and zucchini were swimming in a heavy garlic butter. Despite a few mishaps, we liked our meal at Rumba Cubana for the most part. I would go back, but I would definitely avoid the vegetables next time.
