Shopping for birthday presents is a toughie, especially when the recipient is your auld Da'. I had no idea what to get him for his 59th birthday, as I have spent the last 20 odd years of my life buying him all the tat a Dad could want; jumpers, ties, socks, mugs, novelty beer glasses, bottles of whisky, golf tees. The usual stuff that gets a bit boring year after year.

As part of the community council, my Dad attends functions a lot, so I thought that a nice shirt might be the perfect prezzie. I didn't want your usual Burtons run of the mill stuff, so I opted for men's shirt boutique Thomas Pink, located in Royal Exchange Square. I left with a nice shirt. Nice, in the way that it was a shirt, and I don't really buy many of them so I wouldn't know what a nice one really looked like. It was a blue, long sleeved linen shirt, which could be worn smartly or casually. It cost me a whopping £89.00! I must have been feeling generous that day, because even typing it makes me go a wee bit funny.
My Dad loved it though, and he said he could tell it was an expensive one. He wears it all the time, which is nice, and it looks really good dressed up or down. My present buying mission was a complete success! Hmm, what could I get him next year....? read more
