I was a 35 minute drive away and was SO grateful that Dr. Chris Dutton came in after hours. He was very professional and helpful and clearly cared about animals. It's that kind of service to the community that makes River Road Veterinary Clinic an excellent place to bring your pets.

I've owned dogs for the past 35 years. I have experienced all manner of veterinary situations,…read moreemergencies, surgeries. I have been a client at veterinary practices in 3 different states. Since Covid my primary veterinary practice lost 4 vets and were unable to offer emergency services. That is why, when I had an emergency with a Borzoi puppy I wound up taking him to River Road. River Road charged me $3500 for keeping my puppy in the hospital for 3 weeks and keeping him sick. When I told them I was out of money they released to me a puppy who, after being IN THE HOSPITAL FOR THREE WEEKS, could not even stand up on his own and was so emaciated the bones of his face were jutting out. His condition was shocking. River Road never provided a diagnosis, just one thing after another after another. What should have been the big red flag was that no one from the hospital ever called me for an update. I had to call them and try to track down updates. No veterinarian I have ever visited before had such completely inadequate communication. On top of the lack of communication, the support staff at River Road was, in a word, terrible. Their attitude, demeanor towards and treatment of my family members every time we were in the building was aggressive, nasty, demeaning and utterly unprofessional. We were gaslit for 3 weeks. And then, after I said I could not afford to keep paying they blamed me for the condition of my puppy that they created. I was, in effect, kept in the dark about the reality of my dog's condition and treatment. Presumably because they really had no idea what they were doing, but they just kept following a course that weakened him further and further. I returned my puppy to them the day after taking him home, thinking, mistakenly, that they would provide care for him that I could't afford. Because at that time I still didn't know RIVER ROAD WERE THE ONES keeping him sick and weak and starved. Luckily, they turned Nigel over to Borzoi Rescue, who was also SHOCKED at the horrible condition of a puppy who had been in the hospital for 3 weeks and was released with no ongoing meds, no nothing and weighed 8lbs when he should have been closer to 20lbs (!!!). They transported Nigel out of state to a veterinarian who treated him for sterile gut (River Road had killed off all the flora in his gut and kept him in a persistent state of starvation). His condition turned around overnight. In one night of adequate veterinary care Nigel was able to rally and begin to recover and no longer needed the IV fluids River Rd had just kept him on while they tortured him. Please do not take your pet to River Road Veterinary Hospital. I am ashamed to have subjected Nigel to the horrendous torture they perpetrated on him. I am ashamed that I allowed myself to be gaslit by these people and my family to be treated with disdain and nastiness by a staff who don't know the first thing about the practice of veterinary medicine. After putting the pieces together about what River Road did to me, my family and my puppy I put a stop payment on a check because I refuse to pay for Veterinary Medical Malpractice. I am 55 years old. I have not lived a single year of my life without pets. LOTS of pets. This was the worst veterinary experience of my life. By a long, long, long shot. Worst of all River Road cost my puppy his health and his growth has likely been permanently stunted. Thank God for Borzoi Rescue.

The staff / owner doesn't seem to understand science very well as their "policy" is to require all visitors to the office wear a mask, even though they don't prevent transmission or acquisition of respiratory illnesses like Covid (maybe they should read the Cochrane Review report) and wouldn't let me pick up my two kittens without wearing one. When I waited outside one of the staff members came out and took her mask off, saying she liked to get a break to breathe the fresh air. Won't be back.

My dog was having an issue with her foot that I had hoped would clear up on its own, but she got a little testy about, so I decided to bring her in. I called in the morning and they had a couple of slots open for the same afternoon, which was great. We arrived to a construction site, lots of power tools and men stomping through in their boots. My dog was not particularly disturbed by this, but going to the vet is already not her favorite thing, so it might have been nice to get a heads up. Especially knowing that she was feeling a little protective of her foot, I'm not sure if I would have chosen to bring her to an additionally stressful space with a bunch of strange extra people. The staff was accommodating enough and apologetic of the chaos in their space. We were moved into an exam room pretty quickly. One of the techs came in and asked a bunch of questions and entered everything into the computer. Eventually the vet came in and asked a lot of the same questions, which is fine for verifying everything, but I wondered if she had checked in on the computer info at all. She did an exam. She noticed one growth on my dog, but missed the other, and didn't note her couple of chipped teeth or the spot in her eye that most vets ask about, so I'm not sure how thorough this was. She took some samples from the paw without much explanation of what they were trying to do or learn or what the cost would be. They disappeared to check them out for a while and came back still not really knowing what was causing it. She did give some options while deciding on prescriptions, which was helpful. My dog has had a very similar issue in the past, which we went to another vet for, and it cost about $40 less for the same exam, procedures, and prescriptions ($145 vs $187), so this place seemed a little on the expensive side to me, and I'm not convinced that the care was better. I also asked both the tech and the vet about heartworm meds; neither seemed to run with this and offer to do the test, so I guess we will update them later. They've already done her exam, so we will probably go there to update vaccinations, but I'm not sure that I would stick with them otherwise. Seemed fine, not great.

From the moment we walked through the door we noted how clean and professional and calming and welcoming the space was. We were given a private, comfortable room while we waited. Dr Kelly was extremely thorough in describing the procedure, taking the time to answer all of our questions in a compassionate and truly patient-centered way. He was clearly passionate about the work and incredibly knowledgeable. We were treated with respect and he was open and honest about his recommendations and projected outcomes. The technicians were also caring and went the extra mile to make Daphne (and us) feel comfortable. I received a call with updates from the doctor himself as soon as the surgery was completed, and then another extensive conversation when we returned to pick her up to ensure we understood everything with her discharge and what to expect in the coming days and months. It was clear Dr Kelly and his team are the best of the best when it comes to this type of ortho procedure and we would 10/10 recommend Stonecliff to anyone needing this type of care. We travelled 2.5 hours to get there and it was well worth the trip to know she was in good hands and to reduce the fears we had going into it. We hope to never have to go back but are so thankful to have received the care we did when we needed it!

They have a huge number of vets on hand but they have adjusted the schedule so that there's never more than one available within two or three weeks so it's very difficult to get an appointment there unless you have an emergency and that's questionable too like what happened to me so this time I want to get some medication for my dog that has a skin irritation this is a constantly going on condition that she experiences every year around this time this is all documented in her file every year she has a skin irritation dry skin so are quiet about possibly obtaining some medications for this they refuse to help me so you need to see the dog when it's quite obvious that it's the same problem on a yearly basis they are just trying to get more money from me I just spent close to $2,000 on her at this place due to her ingesting something toxic you would think all you have to do is look at the past history and know what you're dealing with and deal with it accordingly no they are just trying to scrape more money out of me. My dog was there just 3 weeks ago . I feel it Country Animal Hospital has gotten just too big and two corporate at this time when they were a small little office down the road they were great but since then a lot of things with this place has gone down the hill.
