Garden is located at the center of the Torrance Cultural Arts Center

Honestly, I wasn't even planning on writing a review for Pine Wind Garden for two reasons: 1) I was originally planning to visit the Torrance Art Museum, but it was closed when I visited during their normal operating hours, and 2) I wasn't sure I could pen a good enough review of such a small garden that I could circle in a minute. Think of a miniature version of a Japanese Tea Garden, but without the tea, and that's pretty much Pine Wind Garden in a nutshell. I had just completed a volunteer gig and explored a few spots in Torrance, including a long walk around Charles H. Wilson Park. This was on a Saturday when they had the farmers market, and there were soooooo many people there I just needed some alone time. Though an art museum may not be the best place to achieve solitude, I was interested in checking out the art museum, which is adjacent to the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, where this garden is located. From a birds eye view, it may appear as if you'd have to go indoors first before entering the garden, but they actually have a couple of entrances that you can get into from the outside. It's worth mentioning I didn't even know about this garden when I arrived in the parking lot. I was so unhappy about missing out on viewing some modern/contemporary art that I just wanted to explore the area and see what else was nearby. When I saw a directory map, the Pine Wind Garden caught my eye because of its centralized outdoor location, like a courtyard in the middle of a building that you can just look outside if you want to seek even just a brief moment of tranquility. There are a couple of small waterfall fountains, one of which is connected to a stream that flows into the pond where you'll see some koi fish. You'll also see some bamboo trees nearby. Made for such relaxing scenery that I'm sure at least one student in the nearby classroom was jealous they couldn't be out there with me lol. There are a couple of stepping stone paths, and I would strongly recommend watching your step carefully, especially if your shoes or the stones are wet! I was resting on a bench by the koi pond, but it was far from comfortable. In fact, I had to be careful and not fall over while I was enjoying my peace and quiet! I was told several years ago that when one door closes on you, another one opens for you. That was literally the case for me because the doors to the Pine Wind Garden were open, unlike the doors to the art museum that I was originally planning to visit. The price of admission? Zero pennies. The price of parking? Zero pennies as well. What do you have to lose if you're in the area? Nothing! Well except maybe time, but I wouldn't really count that lol

This is a really cute small garden at the Torrance Museum and Cultural arts building. Would I come out of my way here for a Japanese Garden? No, but if I'm in this vicinity going to the Torrance Museum, Torrance Cultural Arts Center, Torrance Theater, Public access station, or the police department definitely Yes! It's more of an office building that has a small walkway garden as opposed to a full-on Japanese Garden but as long as you know that it is quite endearing. It's pleasant to stroll along and enjoy the scenery and koi fish. I'd estimate about 5-10 minutes max. It's great to come here if you live around this block or are trying to find every single Japanese garden you can find. Pine Wind Garden is such a beautiful place especially to get married at. I had a civil wedding a few days ago and everyone was so kind. It was such a beautiful day and just a amazing place.

A free small garden. Pretty tranquil spot where a few people were just playing instruments or relaxing on the bench. I enjoyed the fishes and was a cool spot to checkout if you're also checking out the art museum or library nearby.

The Pine Wind Garden is a small but tranquil. The koi pond had clear flowing water that had many koi fish in different sizes and colors. The fish were beautiful and swimming towards you as if you were going to feed them. The plants were green and lush. The garden was a nice, peaceful get away from the city life. Easy to find parking and free admission.

A great, small little public garden that is free and open to everyone! The Torrance civic area has a bunch of great art and community spaces (this is walking distance to the Torrance Art Museum!). This is in the civic center. Finding it was confusing on Apple Maps, but parking was free so we parked and walked, and once we were on foot it was a lot easier to navigate. The garden is behind the theater and is very small. It has a few benches which would be really nice to sit and read or color at. We had gotten tea and walked around. There is a koi pond with fish (no opportunity to purchase food, and you are not allowed to bring your own). When the weather is nice, this is a great place to relax in the sunshine for free!

The garden is right next to James R Armstrong Theater. The waterfall, the pound with coy fish.... very zen atmosphere! There are a few benches under the trees. Totally a great place to relax before or after the show at the theater. This garden is very well maintained.

[Review #45] After every ballet class, my l'il one refuses to leave without stopping by the garden. There's a stone path encircles the garden, with a small pond to the east that's filled with koi, some turtles, & on some occasions, a mallard or two will visit. H likes the gentle breeze & it's usually cooler in the garden than the rest of TCAC. She regularly makes a couple of rounds with a stop or two at the koi pond before we can have a peaceful departure. I guess the tranquility of this place mellows her for the ride. LOL :-X Since she loves gardens & koi fish, I think we need to visit a couple local favs of mine: Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden (I visited regularly during CSULB midterms & finals week... serenity now... LOL) & South Coast Botanic Garden (free on the 3rd Tuesday each month). Namaste [bowing]... Om...

There are pretty koi fish in the pond to observe. The architecture in the courtyard is beautiful and makes for a great spot to picnic.

The only issue we ran into was with the guests that had special food requests (gluten free, allergies, etc.)---there was a slight mix-up and some of them didn't get their food until much much later on in the night. The food though, was great overall! People kept talking about the chicken and the salmon. I remember the guests commenting on how delicious the food was. I remember that my husband and my sister (she went to the food tasting, since I couldn't make it from Northern California), said that they weren't too impressed during the tasting, but they really blew it out of the water for the day of! Kathy: Kathy is so sweet, friendly, and professional--very extroverted! She made sure that all the details were taken care of and the night went rather smoothly. We were a bit scared because I was checking the weather and it read: sunny, sunny, sunny, sunny, BLUSTERY, sunny, sunny. That blustery day? Wedding day. Ugh, right? But fear not, Kathy made sure it all worked out, and we were still able to do the ceremony outside! DJ Lance: GREAT guy. Super sweet, friendly, and he played such great songs. We gave him a list of songs we'd like, and he rolled with the punches and went for it. He also led our guests in a jeopardy game about my husband and me, in order to dismiss the tables for the buffet food. He projected a powerpoint of us as a couple, growing up, in our respective towns. The guests absolutely LOVED him, as did we. We are quite happy that we chose RBH. After about 10 in-person interviews of other locations, we do not regret our decision.

They even have a small area to do a small arts and crafts paper lantern for the kids! You can even go further in and see the small koi pond and peaceful garden (PINE WIND GARDEN). The mayor was there along with other community and local city members. They sure pulled some strings to make that small event happen. It was so fun and memorable.

Our guests couldn't stop raving about the appetizers and dinner, and there was more than enough food for everyone. We received so many compliments on the menu, and our guests left full and happy. A special thank you to Kaycie, who went above and beyond to make sure everything came together perfectly. I truly debated whether or not to leave this review because our wedding day itself still had some…read morebeautiful moments. However, after reflecting on the entire planning process, I feel future couples deserve transparency before making such a large investment. To start with the positives: the venue itself created a beautiful atmosphere for our wedding, Critic's Choice Catering was loved by our guests, and several setup details, including the welcome table and cake tables, were set up as planned. Many guests complimented the food throughout the evening. Unfortunately, the planning process behind the scenes was extremely stressful and, at times, disappointing due to repeated communication issues, inconsistencies, and preventable mistakes. From the beginning, Kaycie (the founder and coordinator) sold us on the venue by emphasizing that it was "all-inclusive" and offered things other venues did not. During our initial meetings, I specifically asked for an overall quote that included a dinner package so we could determine whether the venue fit within our budget. I trusted her expertise and guidance when she provided us with pricing, and because it fell within our budget, we decided to move forward. Several months later, we discovered that we had actually been quoted for an appetizer package rather than a dinner package. Kaycie stated that we had mentioned possibly bringing in our own catering company, but that was simply a question we asked while exploring options. It was never confirmed that we would be using outside catering. The difference in pricing was substantial, and we felt misled. When we raised our concerns, we were told that we should have noticed the pricing difference and asked more questions before submitting our deposit. As first-time wedding planners, we relied on the expertise we were paying for and expected accurate information from the start. Another concern involved what was actually included with the venue. During our tour, Kaycie proudly showed us a large book of linen options and explained that they offered far more choices than other venues we had visited. Later, we learned that glassware, china, silverware, tables, chairs, linens, and other essentials were not included as we had believed. As people who had never planned a wedding before, we did not know these items would need to be rented separately. We often felt like information presented in person did not align with information later provided through email. For larger weddings, I would strongly encourage couples to get every detail in writing and verify exactly what is and is not included. At one point, we were told, "We have no control over how you read and interpret our literature." As clients relying on the venue's expertise and documentation, that response felt dismissive rather than helpful. One of the biggest disappointments was the seating chart. Kaycie sent me another bride's seating chart as a template and instructed me to follow that format. I did exactly that and even asked her to review it beforehand to make sure everything looked correct. She confirmed it was fine. On the wedding day, however, families were split apart, couples were separated, parents were seated at different tables, and children were not seated with their families. We later learned that she had told some of our guests she could not fully read the chart. Had that concern been communicated beforehand, I would have gladly clarified it or come in myself to ensure it was set up correctly. Instead, one of the most important organizational pieces of the reception was mishandled despite us paying for coordination services and setup assistance. There was also a serious issue involving one of the bartenders, who we later learned was terminated. Multiple guests informed us that he refused to serve drinks unless they tipped him, despite the fact that we paid for bartending services and supplied all of the alcohol ourselves. Guests reported feeling pressured to tip, and one guest was even told, "I have rent to pay," before being asked to send money directly to him. Another guest was left in tears after an uncomfortable interaction. We were also told he attempted to charge for premium tequila shots using tequila that we had personally provided. Several guests commented that drinks were inconsistent and tasted different throughout the evening. I do want to recognize Brendon, the operations manager, who was kind, professional, and genuinely apologetic. He listened to our concerns, acknowledged that these issues should not have happened, and took accountability for the areas where they fell short. His response was the first time we truly felt heard during this process. I understand that no wedding is perfect and that unexpected issues can arise. However, communication, accountability, and professionalism are critical when couples are investing significant time, trust, and money into one of the most important days of their lives.
