Garden is located at the center of the Torrance Cultural Arts Center

Honestly, I wasn't even planning on writing a review for Pine Wind Garden for two reasons: 1) I was originally planning to visit the Torrance Art Museum, but it was closed when I visited during their normal operating hours, and 2) I wasn't sure I could pen a good enough review of such a small garden that I could circle in a minute. Think of a miniature version of a Japanese Tea Garden, but without the tea, and that's pretty much Pine Wind Garden in a nutshell. I had just completed a volunteer gig and explored a few spots in Torrance, including a long walk around Charles H. Wilson Park. This was on a Saturday when they had the farmers market, and there were soooooo many people there I just needed some alone time. Though an art museum may not be the best place to achieve solitude, I was interested in checking out the art museum, which is adjacent to the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, where this garden is located. From a birds eye view, it may appear as if you'd have to go indoors first before entering the garden, but they actually have a couple of entrances that you can get into from the outside. It's worth mentioning I didn't even know about this garden when I arrived in the parking lot. I was so unhappy about missing out on viewing some modern/contemporary art that I just wanted to explore the area and see what else was nearby. When I saw a directory map, the Pine Wind Garden caught my eye because of its centralized outdoor location, like a courtyard in the middle of a building that you can just look outside if you want to seek even just a brief moment of tranquility. There are a couple of small waterfall fountains, one of which is connected to a stream that flows into the pond where you'll see some koi fish. You'll also see some bamboo trees nearby. Made for such relaxing scenery that I'm sure at least one student in the nearby classroom was jealous they couldn't be out there with me lol. There are a couple of stepping stone paths, and I would strongly recommend watching your step carefully, especially if your shoes or the stones are wet! I was resting on a bench by the koi pond, but it was far from comfortable. In fact, I had to be careful and not fall over while I was enjoying my peace and quiet! I was told several years ago that when one door closes on you, another one opens for you. That was literally the case for me because the doors to the Pine Wind Garden were open, unlike the doors to the art museum that I was originally planning to visit. The price of admission? Zero pennies. The price of parking? Zero pennies as well. What do you have to lose if you're in the area? Nothing! Well except maybe time, but I wouldn't really count that lol

This is a really cute small garden at the Torrance Museum and Cultural arts building. Would I come out of my way here for a Japanese Garden? No, but if I'm in this vicinity going to the Torrance Museum, Torrance Cultural Arts Center, Torrance Theater, Public access station, or the police department definitely Yes! It's more of an office building that has a small walkway garden as opposed to a full-on Japanese Garden but as long as you know that it is quite endearing. It's pleasant to stroll along and enjoy the scenery and koi fish. I'd estimate about 5-10 minutes max. It's great to come here if you live around this block or are trying to find every single Japanese garden you can find. A free small garden. Pretty tranquil spot where a few people were just playing instruments or relaxing on the bench. I enjoyed the fishes and was a cool spot to checkout if you're also checking out the art museum or library nearby.

Pine Wind Garden is such a beautiful place especially to get married at. I had a civil wedding a few days ago and everyone was so kind. It was such a beautiful day and just a amazing place.

The Pine Wind Garden is a small but tranquil. The koi pond had clear flowing water that had many koi fish in different sizes and colors. The fish were beautiful and swimming towards you as if you were going to feed them. The plants were green and lush. The garden was a nice, peaceful get away from the city life. Easy to find parking and free admission.

A great, small little public garden that is free and open to everyone! The Torrance civic area has a bunch of great art and community spaces (this is walking distance to the Torrance Art Museum!). This is in the civic center. Finding it was confusing on Apple Maps, but parking was free so we parked and walked, and once we were on foot it was a lot easier to navigate. The garden is behind the theater and is very small. It has a few benches which would be really nice to sit and read or color at. We had gotten tea and walked around. There is a koi pond with fish (no opportunity to purchase food, and you are not allowed to bring your own). When the weather is nice, this is a great place to relax in the sunshine for free!

The garden is right next to James R Armstrong Theater. The waterfall, the pound with coy fish.... very zen atmosphere! There are a few benches under the trees. Totally a great place to relax before or after the show at the theater. This garden is very well maintained.

[Review #45] After every ballet class, my l'il one refuses to leave without stopping by the garden. There's a stone path encircles the garden, with a small pond to the east that's filled with koi, some turtles, & on some occasions, a mallard or two will visit. H likes the gentle breeze & it's usually cooler in the garden than the rest of TCAC. She regularly makes a couple of rounds with a stop or two at the koi pond before we can have a peaceful departure. I guess the tranquility of this place mellows her for the ride. LOL :-X Since she loves gardens & koi fish, I think we need to visit a couple local favs of mine: Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden (I visited regularly during CSULB midterms & finals week... serenity now... LOL) & South Coast Botanic Garden (free on the 3rd Tuesday each month). Namaste [bowing]... Om...

There are pretty koi fish in the pond to observe. The architecture in the courtyard is beautiful and makes for a great spot to picnic.

They have a nursery here and they have a very wide selection of plants! I'd say they're known for their variety of staghorn ferns and air plants but they also have monsteras and other popular house plants. Everything is priced very reasonably. This is a great place to get gifts for friends and family. They are very professional and helpful. They're very patient and answered all my questions when it came to taking care of my staghorn fern. I loved mine so much that I came back a few weeks later to pick up a second one. One of the best things about this place is their koi ponds! They have two inside! You can buy fish food for $3 and feed them at your leisure. It's perfect for kids. For those who own staghorn ferns, they also help with remounting them when they get too big but you'll need to contact them directly and see if the service is available.

There's a community garden here with free mulch. There's a basketball court as well. I noticed lots of folks doing tai chi here. I also noticed groups of nannies meeting up here with their kids. There's no sand, dirt or wood chips at the playground area. The bad: One of the four swings could've used WD40. It was very squeaky. There was a man on the bench by the playground alone with a book who looked to be video recording the playground. I wasn't sure if it was innocent and he was potentially just video chatting with someone and showing them where he was but I was suspicious that a man would come alone and choose a bench by the loud children's play area to read rather than sit at one of the many other benches further away for a quiet space to read. The interesting: There's plenty of street parking. The playground is flat.

Unfortunately, I need to update my original review after several months of residential gardening…read moreservice from Lona's. The issue is not with the actual work, but rather the business model and lack of communication. We have since moved on to another gardening service. Luis wants guaranteed business by charging a monthly fee to show up 2x/month year round. However, for simple lawn/hedge trimming and leaf clean-up, the amount he charges does not make sense. We struck a deal with him for ad hoc service, because nothing grows in the dry months of summer. However, we had a "no-call, no-show" during the rainy season when he had told us multiple weeks in a row that he would come by. When he finally showed up weeks later, he decided to charge us TWICE for overgrowth. Had he shown up the first time he said he would, that would not have happened. It seems he decided our business was no longer worth his time, so he decided to extract the most cash he could from us before we moved on. Needless to say, I cannot recommend Lona's to anyone after this experience.

He stopped by and asked if I need some services; which I said yes as you can see. (I joked with him that I'm a disgrace to my race; being half Japanese; that I hated gardening.) I asked to haul away a ton of junk that was left in the backyard from when my mother lived here. He gave me a quote for clean up the back your including cutting the forest. It was very reasonable. We went through the stuff to trash and to keep. Fortunately for me he had some time the same week. He is very responsive when texting. On the day of the service, he gave me a heads up that he was running a little late, and adjusted the start time which he did keep. Please don't hold that against him! As a person, he is very polite, attentive to any concerns you may have, and overall seems like a very kind hearted individual. He was working with his Father, and had a couple of gentlemen to stop by to help pick up some of the heavier items. I would highly recommend to reach out to Luis to get a quote on any projects you may have. I know his number will stay in my phone for any future needs. Mahalo Nui Luis, great job.
