Students won an award for their science work. Northern is a fascinating example of STEAM--science, technology, arts, music. Northern offers ballet, classical music, and classical Chinese dance, along with the humanities and science programs. We visited an arts studio on campus, too, with student's skillful work displayed. A parent spoke of how flexibly the faculty designed course work for his sons--one was extremely good at math, and they let him advance into a much higher grade to do challenging work. Another was extremely poor at Chinese, and the school found two others who were novices and created an ultra-beginner class just for them. If only all schools could do such things! It's good to see a school restoring and using the abandoned Beaux Arts buildings that had become so blighted. Glad they preserved the graceful proportions and aged brick of the old buildings, while making it modern and bright inside.

Storm King is NOT such a place. Set on manicured grounds in the shadow of Storm King Mountain and just down the road from West Point, SKS is an educational community with an impressive 150 year history (see: https://sks.org). My nephew teaches here. He lives here, with his charges and family. He is an extraordinary educator and reflects the sensibilities of this place. His colleagues are just like him. SKS is exclusive in the sense of expense and rigor (hence not for everyone) but it is not your stereotypical UK snobatorium -- flush with secret handshakes and trust fund teens. It is elite, sure -- but in a good way -- like Yelp; with a Bohemian vibe. Were I in the market for a prep school that boards their students, SKS would be high on my list.

I was scrolling past and I saw the review about the kids who were expelled from Burke and the nasty…read morereview. I think Burke should get high marks for ditching pot smokers! A parent who says their kid is a " good kid" while the kid is using drugs is not a desirable parent. They have rules they enforce. That's awesome. As for moving on to another private school, isn't it appropriate to ask why these students aren't in public school? They are going to encounter competitive acceptance at highly rated universities and their smoking etc isn't going to get them a space. Sadly, pot smoking is associated with a lack of ambition. As for Burke students, a friends daughter did extremely well at Burke recently and was accepted at the university which was her first choice and is doing exceptionally well there also. Her friend we met also is attending a top school. So, pot smokers aren't that welcome in that peer group. I'd say the time to be parenting that issue is gone. You might have the " failure to launch" problem in another few years as many can't pass the drug testing to get a job even now despite legal pot.

Now that my ten year is nearly upon me I am feeling nostalgic. I'm remembering why I want to see everyone again. This was a small school. Everyone knew everyone. We loved each other even if we did not show it all the time. Well at least my class was good to each other. I'm glad I got to go to this school. My other option was the public high school a town over. It was huge. I would have been lost in that crowd. I think I would not have done as well as I did. Over all a pleasant but typical high school experience. Just with uniforms and a small campus.

A hair salon, museum, antiques, home wares and finally a Dunkin' Donuts! From the local goods to Stewart's this small NY town is quite quaint and charming. They've also got quite a few restaurants as well. A local winery about 15 minutes and beautiful scenery. I highly recommend coming here 10/10.

Your child will not recover, they will only get worse an pick up worse habits like drugs, stealing, or not even going to class since nobody is actually monitoring these kids.

PHS is a wonder filled environment for children to blossom. Their Waldorf inspired learning…read moresupports the whole child, mind, body, and soul. They learn through immersion with their specials teachers guiding the children in the same way. Our children spend most of their days in school, so it is important they are able to connect with Nature during this time and at PHS they surely do. Their farm and garden staff is fantastic and children learn compassion and responsibility, while strengthening their will power, through caring for their beloved farm animals. Their verses teach them reverence. Bird counting encourages observation. Planting seeds, growing flowers, and food shows them how to care for themselves and the Earth. All learning is age appropriate and really looks at where children are developmentally and how they can be fully nourished, body, soul, and spirit. My son is currently in first grade and has truly found happiness here. Everyday he wakes up dawn's first light, dresses himself, and is eager to go to school. When I ask him if there was anything not so great about his day, he replies "No, the whole day was GREAT!" We have had superb communication with his teacher and the whole faculty. Our son is truly seen and cared for individually in this beautiful, nurturing community.
