I bumped into this great little country antique shop on one of my weekend wanderings around Galena…read more Although the mailing address is Elizabeth, the store is actually located in central Schapville, a small village between Elizabeth and Scales Mound. And not to easy to find, I may add. There are lots of unmarked divergent paths out here in the boonies! So just keep an open mind and an adventuresome spirit. Schapville is so small that there are only two "stores," this one and the pop machine next door. When I arrived, I was greeted by a very friendly old dog named Stanley. This is a seasonal business, so you need to come between May and October. The store is a beautifully renovated old grange space used by area farmers. It offers a selection of fine antiques, and a nice array of same on two floors, a cooler with local cheeses (they were featuring one of my favorites that day-Iowa Maytag Bleu.) There is soda, homemade jams and jellies and other condiments, and fresh eggs from the owner's chickens. There is kind of an overall chicken theme going on here, just short of chicken worship, I would stay. The owner, Donna, is a fun and interesting person to chat with. Free fresh popcorn, too. There's a wood stove with a fire near the front and a seating area which is very inviting. Definitely a must-stop in Jo Daviess County if you are looking for a nice little jaunt out of Galena, or doing a day trip in the area east of The Galena Territory. The scenery is superb.

There are pendulums; books introducing one to paganism, or Wicca specifically as well; puzzles; tarot cards; pins; diaries; greeting cards; and so on. Nearly half of the shop features supplies for fiber crafts, so of course you'll find yarn here but also yarn bowls, cross stitch and embroidery kits, and so on. I bought several beautiful rolls of wrapping paper, which I spent a ridiculous amount of money in but it was really gorgeous and I can't wait to give some gifts now! The folks here also run a ghost tour. I overheard the proprietor speaking with some other customers, and he mentioned they do a 90 minute walking tour. I was so bummed that I had plans tonight (even more bummed that those plans didn't really materialize!!). Next time I visit I would like to take a ghost tour. It was especially interesting listening to these folks talk with the owner because they themselves are ghost hunters, and they were asking about haunted places and said they like to take their own equipment out to explore. The store is not really accessible, unfortunately. There is a big step up from the sidewalk to enter. If you have mobility issues but can manage a large step up (probably at least 6-8 inches) it may work, but wheelchair users will not be able to enter. The owners seem to be cultivating a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, so if you need assistance I'm sure they would be happy to help.

Programming is creative and fun, with "Art on the Porch" demos from local artists every Saturday during summer and "Great Draw" sidewalk art competition for charity in early autumn. This building (gift shop is one room; museum is one room) features more than 4000 pieces of glass art, including a piece by Dale Chihuly ( a shelf art type piece, not my favorite here). They start off grouped by color, including varieties of Depression glass. There are some incredible vases and perfume bottles, tiny pieces with incredible detail; at least one Victorian paperweight; a collection of bride baskets (glass-handled ones and glass inserts only; the silver handles required too frequent polishing); a number of Murano Venetian glass pieces; a large selection of beautiful paperweights; a few small statues. Mostly blown glass, thought there is some cut glass in the gift shop. Tour finishes with a UV circuit around the room so the pieces of "uranium" glass are revealed. The gift shop ranges from superaffordable jewelry and smaller bottles to pieces which were obviously de-accessioned. If you like art glass (you know who you are), definitely worth a stop. This started as one woman's collection; our guide was her husband, who is also knowledgeable and will happily tell you about their trips around the world looking for beautiful glass pieces. Admission $5.

I've only seen the brand at one shop in Chicago (though I'm not constantly looking for it), and that shop only had the redwoods scent I think. So now I have even MORE lotion (I have too much; it's a problem) in some really nice, subtle scents. Evan Healy is another brand that they have, which I have never tried but have heard about for years. They also sell scarves, blankets, jewelry, candles, and so on. They had some really delicious salted caramels when I was in so I bought a few of the individual pieces. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in Galena! Shopkeepers are really friendly too. There are a couple of steps to enter the store, so accessibility could be tricky.

For instance, we purchased the incredible Lavender hand soap in a classy brown-glass container and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We brought it back with us for their wonderful $10 refill deal. They refilled the bottle while we shopped and had it ready when we were ready to check out. Such great service. Some other staples include high quality candles, organic soap bars, decadent hand-creams, and luxurious lotions! Galena apothecary introduced me to the Sea Aster hand creme which I now swear by. I always have a travel size in my pocket! Some other amazing purchases have included candles inspired by different scents found in national parks and a Rosebud Apothecary keychain (yay Schitt's Creek references). The staff are always kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. They've helped me get connected with the best products for me. And I've LOVED how they have maintained protective COVID safety protocols throughout all of the pandemic through today. Thanks for keeping us safe! Galena Apothecary is an incredibly classy, high quality, and chic store. Since the products are high quality, do know that its prices are on the higher end. But the products are totally worth it!
