Union Rack and Roll - Bowling at night!

This is a hidden gem at Purdue. It is a nice cute bowling place with many lanes under the Purdue…read morememorial union building. I really like the ambiance at night, when they turn on the neon lights and turn off the regular day lights. Prices aren't that bad at all too, compared to when I went bowling in California in my hometown. The workers there are nice, mostly college students. I didn't try any of the food there so I can't speak for that but overall a great place to have fun!

The fact that the name of Purdue's student-run bowling alley is itself a 'double-meaning' is a good…read moresign. Wait, what? The Memorial Union's "Rack and Roll" is a play on the phrase 'rock & roll' (which they have playing through speakers), as well as describing exactly what you can do there: shoot billiards ('rack' the pool balls) and go bowling ('roll' the.....well, duh). So the name is (perhaps unintentionally) clever, big deal. But is it still worthy of a 5-star rating? Absolutely. Their pool tables are either in good or great condition, depending on which one you choose, but the lighting is perfectly appropriate for the nature of the sport. The arcade games are excellent as well--they have 2 pinballs, 'Family Guy' and 'Iron Man' (both newer Stern tables in fine shape), in addition to a Guitar Hero Arcade version, high-definition Terminator shoot-em-up, and several others. The bowling area is just as well-maintained, as I've never experienced an issue with balls getting stuck in the gutter, needing a pin reset, etc. The animations that are displayed after a throw (e.g. spare, strike, 7-10 split) are cute, sometimes funny even, and I'm fairly certain that they're student-made on behalf of the college of computery-people. I recall the price to bowl being very reasonable, and often times students can do so for free during special events. I loved coming here as a student to roll (just NOT on Shomer Shabbos), and I'm looking forward to many happy returns as an Alumni. The Union's Rack and Roll is a terrific place to relax in between classes or decompress after a 2-hour differential equations final. "Well, that's like, your opinion, man."

The girl at the front checked the kids in and was very friendly. I found the prices to be higher than expected and paid a little over $37 for two kids to play... Upon entering the play area, There is a sweaty gym smell in the air and the floors were filthy! Two areas of play. One is for toddlers, though I saw bigger kids in that area so I'm guessing it's not enforced well. Then a second area for older kids with trampolines. I don't think I'll be returning for the price that was paid...

They have free wifi and a very friendly staff, but I did not see them very much. Save yourself some time and complete your waiver at home, before you get to the venue. They have a sized moderate arcade and a play area. They are priced separately. I took my little there only for play area. You can purchase time on a card to play the arcade games. You win virtual tickets, that are stored on your card, that can be redeemed for prizes....Chuck E Cheese style. In order to play in the play area, you must purchase their non-slip socks. You only have to purchase them once as long as you bring them with you. You pay for 2-hour blocks of time, but they do not really harass people about their times. 2 hours was more than enough for me. The play area has seating along the wall and bar style seating along the play area rail. They had hand sanitizer positioned in a few spots on the bar. The play area has an area for smaller children that has a small ball pit, rocking horses and other equipment. Then to the left of that area is the area for the bigger kids. That area is a HUGE 4-level Jungle gym with some awesome slides, a trampoline, a pit filled with foam blocks, a ball pit with ball cannons. As I parent, I recommend bringing some headphone to listen to music, or a laptop/iPad to play games or do some work while your little(s) are playing. You may also want to bring a phone charger and/or make sure you have a full charge. Upstairs you will find a small snack bar with tables to eat at and a couple of areas sectioned off for birthday parties. It was not a very impressive party area, but would do if you really wanted to hold your party there. The snack bar has cookies, pretzels, candy, chips, water, soft drinks and pizza to name a few of the items. There is no outside food allowed here. The two hours flew by for my little. She had a great time and cannot wait to come back. I do like that accompanying parents do not have to pay to get in. Parents are not allowed to go past the first level of the jungle gym and are required to purchase socks if they do go in the play area. The venue may not be as flashy as other similar places like Smiley's or Skyzone but it is much more economical.

When you walk in, it takes just a second for your eyes to adjust as the whole place is dark and lit by blacklights. As you enter the door, you are greeted with a few arcade game machines. The mini golf course is towards the back and was relatively reasonable for pricing. It was $26.00 for three adults to play a round. The course was decent with many right angle banking and some shots where you need to hit it into an obstacle. There is no elevation to the holes unless it is a ramp so the holes are almost all flat. The final hole is a large clown face where you hit the ball into his mouth. The arcade consisted of quite a few games to play: skee ball, crane games, deal or no deal, a big wheel to spin and a few other fan favorites as well. The games cost anywhere from $1.10 to $1.75 for a play so it isn't completely outrageous. There were 't too many options to choose from at the arcade redemption center so I would suggest expanding more items here for people to earn. This is a fun place to spend a couple hours with the kids or a fun date. They even have birthday packages available for children with a designated room.
