Piggly Wiggly in Vass is a REAL, hometown, southern grocery store. Piggly Wiggly was the first self serve grocery store - before that, folks didn't have a choice about products, they simply put in orders and a clerk would fill the orders. Piggly Wiggly is an authentic Southern tradition. That said, the Piggly Wiggly in Vass is the best grocery store in Moore County, bar none. No, they don't a lot of imported/gourmet items.... they do carry nice, fresh eggplant (which another reviewer, who obviously doesn't understand or appreciate Southern/rural/country/small town life called "aubergines".... which just isn't what we call eggplants in America...). The produce manager is an older man, named Scott. He doesn't put long expiration dates on the produce, because he visits the farmers market weekly and buys fresh, local items. Older produce goes to the mark down rack (yes, they still have one).... I've shopped there for 10 years and never seen anything "moldy" in the fresh produce section, as that reviewer claimed. Of course, he also claimed that all of the eggs had chicken poop on them.... well, in America, eggs come to stores pre-packed, from farms/processors... they are pre-graded, washed, packaged and shipped.... and heavily regulated. So, I think we can make some obvious assumptions about that reviewer's perceptions... Regardless, yes the store is old... but not dirty. It has been in business for a long time... serving quality groceries at very low prices to a hard working, rural community. They have REAL butchers, who cut beef and pork fresh, daily. They sell Springer Mountain Farm organic, free range chicken. They get fresh seafood in from the coast (limited amounts, but it is NC caught). You can buy whole hogs for barbecue. You can buy fresh produce actually grown locally by real farmers. I drive from Pinehurst each week to shop at Piggly Wiggly in Vass. Even though I'm not from the small town of Vass, the people there are friendly and make me feel welcome - that is very rare in Moore County! Actually, it is about as rare as a southern accent in Pinehurst.... not many native southerners around here... The prices are low enough to make up for the gas spent driving there to shop - check their sale flyer out online if you don't believe me. read more
