The pork belly was a large portion (enough for at least two people). You could eat the pork belly with your fork it was so tender. Didn't have good experience. Prices are steep. Then my ordered food (brisket fries) wasn't really good. It's basically poutine. Most of the plate is soggy thick fries which are hard to digest. Next, service is terrible. There really weren't many people yet waiter never came to take our order. Finally ordered at the bar. But the tipping point was that we asked for ketchup because there were just so many fries. We have NOT been told this would be extra yet got charged 2$ for ketchup. The first time I had to pay for ketchup with fries and that with fairly steep prices. Can absolutely not recommend. read more

Luckily Pig and Whistle's kitchen stays open until 10, or even later according to the friendly staff. Is the best food in New Zealand? No, but its pretty darn good, and with the proper prices to match. $24 Lamb Burger w/Salad...a giant burger with two lamb meats patties with some sort of secret sweet relish sauce that made it magic. Side salad was huge too! $24 Moroccan Lamb Sandwich...roasted lamb slices with a light seasoning of Moroccan spices, not as good as the burger, but still delicious. After a long day and drive, we headed out for dinner and stopped by Pig & Whistle for a drink. This place was popular! The bar is in an old building, with the taps along the left wall and high top seating around. They also have a back and side seating area that's outside but covered and heated. You order drinks and food at the bar and they bring it to you. Pig & Whistle serves all Moa beers. I had a dark lager, which went well with the cold wet weather. We enjoyed watching all the families and large groups eat and drink together. The staff and bartenders were all friendly; beer was cheap. I came in because they're an Untappd Verified Venue and have their own local badge. It's a fun place to have a drink! read more

This was my favorite restaurant while in New Zealand. Prices are around $10-$20 USD. The portions are HUUUUGE. (Insert GIF of Trump's Hands extending outwards). One of the top items here is the lamb salad. I had a few bites of it and definitely hits the travelers diet as it's a large salad and plenty of juicy lamb pieces. Another item that a friend ordered was fish and chips. There plate was very generous to the point it was a battle to finish. The lamb burger is a decent burger, but nothing to call home about. I got the lamb rump steak, and it was extremely tasty. The lamb is cooked perfectly medium rare (or to your liking) and served with roasted veg and tasty sauce. We enjoyed this place much better than restaurant down the way, but that's for another review. It's an interesting concept where the customers need to order food and drinks at the bar. It increases efficiency, but it also requires customers to leave their party and stand in line to order more drinks. Hence, we did not give it 5 stars. The food was great. I had the lamb salad. There was a very good amount of lamb on the salad. The lamb burger was also tasty. Their serving sizes are large and may even be shareable depending on how hungry you are. Came here on a Wed night and there was barely a crowd. Staff was friendly and young. Met a waiter who was brand new so he kept asking his coworker questions which didn't bother me since he was kind. We got the Crispy Chicken Wings, none of which were crispy at all, but rather overcooked and dry. Disappointing since it didn't do the one thing it was supposed to do, and this was only our appetizer. The spicy sauce that came with it made it more edible. My husband liked his burger, which had a grass-fed beef patty, a Portobello mushroom and strips of streaky bacon on it. The pigtail fries (which Americans call "curly fries") that came with my husband's burger were the best part of the entire meal. My salmon was cooked well, for the most part, except one section that was overcooked. It was underseasoned, but the overly sweet carrots balanced it out in the end. The best part was probably the shrimp, which had the most seasoning out of everything on that plate, and was surprisingly not overcooked despite it being grilled. Service was friendly, but the policy of having customers order at the bar--even food--is kind of annoying. What if we wanted to get more food? That's only better for the owner and management, since they don't have to hire as many people. Overall, the restaurant (ok, bar) is probably better than similarly priced restaurants like Applebee's and TGIFriday's in the States, but I had higher expectations, for some reason. We came to Pig and Whistle as we arrived in Rotorua, rather late, and because it was one of the few places still open. We ordered the Lamb Burger with Pigtail Fries, and a beer, to share. Thank goodness we shared because the portion was massive. The burger was good but a mess to eat. And the fries was fried and seasoned perfectly. I wished I had more room in my stomach so I could finish them! We got one of the Monteith's beers, and it was a refreshing accompaniment, especially after the long day of adventures. This seems to be quite common in New Zealand, but we were a little confused by the service setup at restaurants that have bars. You order and pay ahead of time at the bar, then grab a table, and a server will bring the food out to you. We grew to actually really enjoy this process as it meant we didn't need to wait for the attention of a server to pay and then wait again at the conclusion of the meal. A worthy stop while in Rotorua, for sure. But there is a surprising number of good restaurants in this little town. read more

We had an awesome time here! I ordered the Moroccan lamb sandwich which was excellent and my friend ordered the vegetarian nachos. She had specified no cheese as she's allergic to dairy but when our food arrived there was cheese on it. The waitress apologized more than once and offered my friend a free drink. Later on when they removed our plates they noticed that my friend hadn't eaten her nachos. She said that they were a bit stale but she didn't make a big deal out of it. Once again the waitress offered her a free drink and later arrived with tequila shots for all of us! What incredible service! The old cop shop this very tastefully modern pub is equal parts Rotorua history, kiwiana and the in place to grab a drink and some bar fries. A massive covered out door area great for kids and big families. We sat near the front door close to one of the many fireplaces. I ordered a hot toddy which got a puzzled look, I explained what it was she left to check with the bar staff and can back to ask if I would like it alcoholic or virgin. It came with a cinnamon stick. Nice touch. We ordered some to share nibbles which was excellent. We read about the history and soaked in the atmosphere. Walked around and marvelled at the interesting décor and wall hangings. We came here on a recommendation from a couple that stayed in the same B&B with us. The atmosphere is nice with ample seating when we went there. The price of the food is reasonable for the amount of food they give you. I had ordered the ribs and I roughly counted 16 or so in my plate. The quality however was alright. There wasn't too much meat on the ribs but then again when you have 16 or so ribs to go through, too much meat would be too much for most people. The lamb salad was good as well. This place was a quite nice find in Rotorua! Wandered in on a Sunday evening after a visit to the Government Gardens. My mates and I got 3 plates to share: the pork belly dish was quite yummy, very tender and a nice flavour. The pork medallion dish was also delish, though I feel the pork could have been cooked a bit longer, as it was just a tad chewy.
