    Elephant Rock Bch Club

Private beach club that hosts a short stretch of beach in front of an immense rock that…read moreresembles...you guessed it, an elephant. Like some other beach clubs that I have visited, the general public is not allowed entry through the front gate unless someone sponsors you as a guest. I actually think that it keeps the atmosphere peaceful and relaxed with that type of guest control. Up until last summer, my father's family owned a house on the beach here, had a family membership that we all could enjoy and we strolled our guests beachside into the exclusive private club beach area. However, there is a small parking lot about a quarter mile up that has about five parking spots. Follow Acoaxet Road as if you were going to drive into the ocean. If you snag a spot, you can clamber over some rocks, walk to the right a few yards down to the beach club area and be treated to some truly unspoiled beach-going. The sand is unreal, sea glass amazing and the waters are crystal clear. The body surfing (or body boarding) here rocks!! If you go to the left of the parking lot, you can find the ruins of some of the mansions that were swept away in the 1938 hurricane. Only the staircases remain. Very cool. The beach club has the only restroom facilities. You can totally saunter up to use the lav (women to the left and men to the right) if you make it look like you know what you're doing. Phone service (all carriers) and GPS is spotty, at best, down here. One of the few times you might actually want to print a map. Great roads for road biking. It is truly pristine here.

Love this place! Great beach. Never crowded. Public isnt allowed on until after 6pm. Lifeguard…read morestaff is second to none. Super clean! Became an unleashed dog park once the public was allowed which fortified my love of the "private" aspect of it during the prime hours.

    Prudence Island Hiking Trails

Peaceful trails on a…read more very quiet island Prudence Island is an island in the middle of Narragansett Bay that's about 7 miles long and only about a mile wide. No fancy restaurants, no B&B's, no places to buy crummy t-shirts and not even a public bathroom. It doesn't care about or even wants tourists and about two thirds of the island is conservation land. There are some houses on the island but not many people go to visit. That's part of what makes it so special. There is a ferry from the town of Bristol that goes out there or you can just kayak or sail a few miles across the bay. Lots of places to land and nobody really cares what you do on Prudence as long as you are quiet about it. It's a cool place to bike ride but it also has some nice hiking. Most of the trials are in the middle of the island and are extremely well taken care of by the people that live here. They trails are short but most of them connect so you can jump from one path to another and keep hiking for a while. The whole island has ticks and proper precautions are absolutely necessary because Lyme's Disease is a real danger here. Not vigorous or difficult hiking by any means but the scenery and isolation is stunning. Absolutely quiet except for the numerous birds. No car noise, cell phones or people talking. It's very unlikely you will ever see another person even during the "crowded" summer months. During the winter the trails are beautiful and hiking through the quiescent snow is a great and ethereal experience. The ocean is never far away and the smell and sound of the salt water is your constant companion. The trails have rather mundane names like The Army Road, School House Trail, Crow's Nest and Bob Clachrie Trail. Nothing really special about any particular trail except for the fact they are on a very peaceful and isolated island. With all the noise and chaos in the world that alone is very special. Peaceful trails on a very quiet island
