So knowing it recently snowed and that it hasn't all melted away, I immediately drove down on my first day off. I'm sure it would have been even more beautiful than it was today if I had been here just after a fresh snowfall. But it was a good glimpse of just how beautiful it could be. There were still many patches of white and the landscape was transformed by it. The cold breeze enveloped you as you walked the 3.5 miles was refreshing like chugging a cold beer on a hot summer day. It's an easy stroll even on the "rougher" terrain. Any hiking shoes would easily help you traverse the whole 3.5 miles. You get to see many of the historical and private mansions along the coast. And if you're curious to see more of them, continue onto the main road at the end of the cliff walk and see them from there (lots of information posted along the way too!) Parking during off-season is plentiful and free. Good luck during the rest of the year finding parking when crowds really pack this place...

There are also great views of the Atlantic. On the downside, it can be very crowded and it's fairly narrow in spots. (I was going to put in an offer on the Breakers mansion, which has 70 rooms, 48 bedrooms and 27 fireplaces but thought it might be too drafty!!!). Newport is a great place to visit, and if you arrive on a decent day, it's worthwhile to take a walk on the Cliff Walk!

We drove down Memorial Blvd from where we were staying in Middletown and then found the beach. There a paid parking lot, but - had we known - there's also street parking if you're lucky or go there early enough during a not heavy season. The beach is a three-quarter mile long strip. You get beautiful views of the ocean and coast. I saw some surfers and families enjoying laying out on the sand. Apparently, there's also an aquarium that is run by a non-profit that's goals is to protect and preserve the Narragansett Bay. Tip: If you're doing the Cliff Walk, you'll walk along the boardwalk on an incline from the paid parking lot. You'll then see signs pointing to where the Cliff Walk begins.

There's also huge rocks you can take a seat and relax on, and everyone we passed was so friendly -- but we only passed a few people every once in a while. The best part? It's covered in the coooolest graffiti on the inside and outside of cement tunnels and abandoned structures that you can walk through. I've never seen anything like it! We got all of the details through email and showed up the day of ready to go. Our instructor, Chris, took us through the basics before getting in the water and then we got to have the remainder of the time playing on the waves. He helped us get up on a few and gave us opportunities to do it ourselves too before heading back in. We had a great experience and would recommend anyone looking to give lessons a go to say yes!
