I had dinner with my mom at La Pitahaya a week or so ago for our last meal together in Mexico City…read more The restaurant is entirely vegan, 100% plant-based. My mom is vegan, and I'm not (technically, I'm a very lapsed vegan), but this menu was one that I was excited to try, too! We shared the al pastor and pineapple dumplings (4 steamed dumplings filled with mushrooms and roasted pineapple puree, served over green salsa and ponzu), which were great. (It was hard to choose between these dumplings and the huitlacoche dumplings!) We also shared the crunchy cucumber salad (with fresh radish, sesame, lime, mint, and guajillo), which was simple and refreshing. Then we had to try some of their tacos - served on their famous pink tortillas. We tried three of their tacos, but the pastor de setas (organic mushrooms al pastor, pineapple, and spring onions) was our hands down favorite. They're an alcohol-free restaurant, but I enjoyed my tepache (fermented pineapple drink with piloncillo), to which I added a hibiscus chamoy rim). They offer other fun N/A drinks: amaranth horchata, hibiscus water, and more. The service was great, and the restaurant was cool - open air, great on a warm day, bright, comfortable. Of all the vegan restaurants we tried in Mexico City, I think La Pitahaya was my favorite. The food was great, and our meal was fun. I'd happily return.
