    Figs for desert
    Alice W.

This place is a GEM! Really good affordable vegetarian food and very friendly staff. Looks like a humble but popular place where the locals eat. I'd come here every day. No English menu and staff don't speak English. I tried to use google translate with the menu (which took a while) and still couldn't decide what to get, so I looked at my neighbors table. My neighbor was so nice they couldn't speak English but they pointed out the dishes they ordered and offered me to try their food! Waiter saw this and brought me a big plate full of samples so I could try them all! I ended up getting the same dish my neighbor got, a package with original soup, a big plate of fruits, rice and a variety of vegetables, and figs for desert, all for under $100 + tip! 5 stars for service, 5 stars for food, 5 stars for neighbour eating next table! :)

A good section of fresh baked goods.

Yug is an institution in the Mexico City veggie scene. No, it is not the newest. It is not the fanciest. But it was there decades ago when finding vegetarian or vegan food was challenging in Mexico City. It continues to offer decent vegetarian options at nearly unbeatable prices. There is a lot of variety. The staff has been around and is helpful. If you are looking to show off, this is not for you. But if you want to experience some local heritage, then welcome....

We'd made a reservation in advance and were seated right away when we arrived on a Friday afternoon. The space itself was surprisingly plain and industrial - grey walls, almost no decor. For a place with a menu with so much personality, I was surprised that the interior had almost none. For drinks, I ordered a glass of natural white wine, which was very good. The 3 of us ordered a bunch of items to share family-style, starting with the Samosas, Paratha Quesadilla, Ceviche, and Camarones Pa'pelar. These were by far the most impressive items of the night! The texture of the Samosas was absolutely perfect, and it was hard to decide if the beef or potato ones were more delicious. The Paratha Quesadilla was such satisfying comfort food and the Ceviche was incredibly fresh and tasty. The Camarones Pa'pelar were super flavorful and the dipping sauce truly blew my mind. However after this, things went a little downhill for me. The Kuku Poussin was tasty but not as innovative as the appetizer dishes. And unfortunately I just wasn't a fan of the Whole Red Snapper. We also tried two desserts - the Tamal de Chocolate and Chai Tres Leches - but neither one blew me away. The concept of a Chai Tres Leches sounded so good but although the texture was nice, I felt like it was missing some sweetness. Overall though, we still enjoyed our meal and highly recommend trying the small plates!

Especially since the fusion restaurant near me is mediocre. Boy was I stand corrected? We had a rather later reservation at 2:30pm for lunch. It was the only reservation I could get with the amount of people I had. We were running late, but luckily still made it just in time even with the 15 minute grace period. The ambiance is gray concrete and it just seemed very modern and structure. There was also an upstairs for extra dining room. The bathroom was so neat! The music was a mix of Bollywood with a Mexican twist. Although, there were so much chatter could barely hear it unless in the bathroom. It was kind of an open kitchen layout so could see the food being made, but our table was tucked away in a little corner. Our server asked if he should just pick out the dishes for us and my party agreed. Not only did he manage to pick out the dishes that were top notch, he also explained the history behind each dish. Some surprising shoutouts- Samosas 5/5 - I really thought it would be a basic potato samosa with chutney on the side. We ordered 2 vegetarian samosas and 3 beef samosas. First of all, presentation points! The chutney drizzled on top of the samosa looked so chic. This samosa was probably one of the best samosas I've ever had in my life. And trust me, I've had plenty! Paratha quesadilla 10/5 - I legit wouldn't stop raving about this. This was probably the best dish I had the whole trip. I really did underestimate this place, because whatever paratha they used and cheese, just wow! Along with the salsa and salad. This dish was amazing! The drinks were okay. The Rooh- Afza was not potent enough for our liking. Same with the Chaas Colada. Chai borracha was also okay. Definitely a must go to place!

The food is alright, but massively overpriced and lacking flavour depth. We stopped in for dinner and were greeted by a very friendly, English-speaking server. I ordered the lentil soup (110 pesos) to start -- pretty tasty, but overpriced given what you get. My wife & I also shared the huitlacoche dumplings (150 pesos), which comes with 4 dumplings filled with a sort of corn-like filling and topped with a peanuty sauce -- tasty, but a rip-off for 4 pieces. For our mains, I got the protein bowl (280 pesos) and added some chickpea chorizon (25 pesos). Fairly boring but healthy bowl. Nothing really stood out. The tofu was not plentiful enough, nor prepared all that well. Satisyfing enough, but again, overpriced. My wife got the Enfrijoladas (265 pesos), a dish with pink tortillas filled with plantains, coconut cheese and almonds, all sitting in a black bean sauce. The tastes I had were pretty solid, but lacked flavour depth and needed some spices to amp it up. All in all, not worth the hype, especially if you're looking for authentic vegan Mexican. There are many other places worth prioritizing in town.

One note: if charging USA prices you really have to try to reach USA service expectations. 45 minute wait for tacos. I had to go find my own napkins and flatware. Again, the food is worth it but this was the most expensive meal we ate in Mexico.
