    Handmade latte. Good!

Hiding in the shadow of the bright lights of neighboring Starbucks, Picnic does has coffee (and latte etc) which is way better. None of the burned or overcooked flavor. The focus here is organic and fairtrade, with lots of unique salads and sandwiches. The cooler is overstuffed with choices like Brie Cranberry Apple, Pate Brie, Vegetable Samosas and Thai Green Chicken. Crisps ("chips" in American) are also interesting - Worcester Sauce and Sundried Tomato, Bloody Mary and Mature Cheddar with Red Onion. I spotted a smattering of pastries as well, as I enjoyed my coffee. Would I return? An unqualified yes!

    Espresso and macaroon!

One of the hidden treats in Reading town centre: a small, independent coffee shop with better caffeine than Costa across the street (no need even to mention the Starbucks next door), decent food, and people with a genuine smile behind the counter. The salads are very good, as are some sandwiches. But there are no toilets (you have to send your kids to the Starbucks...) There's no WiFi, which is probably wise on their part, as people wouldn't leave.

This place is seriously delightful for a light and inexpensive lunch. If chorizo and sun dried tomatoes and other things yuppy but oh so good are your style then let's go here and get a picnic lunch box- you can pick and choose what you wish to indulge in or you can give in to one of their ready prepared concotions- some of the lentil salads have felt terrifically healthy. Not guilty feelings there. The place is very small but your lunch will be packed in a very handy take away box. However, if you do want to sit then there are two little tables and a window bench, or in nicer weather they put out a table or two. They have a lovely tea selection too, and homemade flapjacks. You do need to watch out here though, that you don't go way over lunch budget- it does become rather tempting. It is a refreshing little place to have in the centre of Reading.

We had to wait 20 minutes for a slightly cramped communal table, and it was all worth it. My…read morePhilly cheesesteak inspired sandwich was truly excellent, with warm, juicy flavorful beef and rich cheese curds, nicely balanced by green bell peppers and onions and bound together by a mild garlic aioli on perfect sandwich bread. Also got a slightly spicy and crisp coleslaw for a cool contrast and a minor dose of vitamins. My tablemates were also really pleased with their orders (a vaguely East Asian glazed chicken with pickled Banh Mi-style veggies and a cold roast beef with arugula--must try those next). Wow. Another reason to visit Cambridge.

Nice, high quality sandwiches. I actually went here two…read moredays in a row while staying in Cambridge. The first day I ordered two sandwiches, the Porchetta and the Jerk Chicken. The Porchetta sandwich has nice roasted pork and a crispy strip of pork skin to top it off. The description says it has a salsa verde sauce. To me, it was more like a pesto-style sauce. The pork was all meat and didn't have any globs of fat that you sometimes find in American pulled pork barbecue. The Jerk Chicken Sandwich was the weekly special. It consisted of several pieces of skin-on mostly dark meat chicken, house made slaw and I think a little mayo. I took off the chicken skin. It wasn't crispy and I don't care for much chicken skin. Even doing that, it had good flavor. A nice blend of spices and a little spiciness. I didn't eat it right away but it was still good. Like I said, I ordered this sandwich the next day. This time I ate it soon after ordering. The roll was still warm and slightly crunchy. I liked even more when eating it "fresh." I removed the skin on this one too. I used the take out window on the side and they were pretty quick, even though there were about four or five people in front of me. I'll definitely go back when in town and craving a sandwich.

Without a doubt, one of the best cups of coffee I've had since arriving in Reading (other than my…read moreown at home, of course), Workhorse is truly all about the coffee. Technically a chain (because there are now two of them), this is a very small independent player, competing on Reading's "coffee corner" with six other shops within 100 yards (Starbucks, Costa, Coffee Republic, West Cornwall Pasty, Pret and the one-off independent Picnic). This location of Workhorse (the other is in West Reading) is in the historic King George Hotel, believed to be one of the very oldest buildings in Reading and dates back to 1423. The shop is a completely unique split-level and since they only opened recently, is still quaintly hand finished. Certainly a nicer character than the cookie cutter Starbucks. If the competition is only about the coffee and the service, Workhorse wins hands down. Choosing my beans (eight little tubs of Guatemalan, Ethiopian, Kenyan and more I can't recall), they were ground right then and there, put into a one-off drip filter and hand watered into my coffee cup. Talk about fresh! And the food choices are all local, which made my ham, chorizo and cheese ciabatta completely guilt-free. The guy serving me was happy to talk coffee. He was particularly engaging regarding their style of coffee making as well as my thoughts on french press. He didn't get drawn into comparisons with "the other guys" across the street. (Literally, across the street - you can see their bright green banner in the window in my picture!) All of that would be worth five stars, but I have to take one back because sadly, there is no free wireless available in the shop. As I read online, that's not the demographic of customer they want to reach. That's okay. Since that's the market I'm in, I'll pop in for great coffee but it won't be my hangout.
