The Pickin' Patch is a pick your own (fruits and veggies) farm established in 1666; it used to be a dairy and tobacco farm. Yes, I love historic places and farms! I read reviews and gathered that it was a great place to visit, especially during the autumn time. The parking lot was spacious right off the busy road. They offer hayrides and there was a pumpkin patch; you can pick your own in the field or in the store. There was a garden center and farm store. The farm store had jams, jellies, apples, gourds, cookies, veggies, pumpkins, mums, hot sauces, etc. They had wheelbarrows for you to use, if you're planning to buy a few big pumpkins. They also had an apple fritter/donut/cider stand. I purchased half a dozen of apple fritters for $8; you can add extra cinnamon sugar. Those apple fritters looked like donut holes but tasted like apple donuts, it was very splendid! Overall, a great spot to stop by if you're into the small town farm vibes. There was a beautiful view of the Heublein tower on the hill and the fall foliage. It's the perfect fall activity! read more

Apparently they close at 4 so I wished they would advertise that that's all. Very cute selection of pumpkins. The farm stand had several apples and other products but we mainly came for the fritters. This is that local good feeling place for pumpkins, apple cider, fresh apples, and so much more. Visiting Connecticut and I appreciate such places. My son and I had a blast here. On the weekends more things are available like apple fritters. But if you want a quiet visit, weekdays are great. We took some amazing photos and enjoyed the chilly weather. The Pickin' Patch is a seasonal farm stand and country store that opened in Avon, Connecticut in 1666. Historically it is known as Woodford Farm and it was founded by Joseph Woodford. It is one of the 10 oldest family farms in Connecticut. The farm has essentially been in the Woodford Family throughout its 350+ year existence. The current owner for the past 20+ years is Christopher Carville, whose mother was Janet Woodford Carville. At one time the farm was 350 acres, but today it is a much more manageable 77 acres. The farm used to raise animals and was once an award-winning dairy farm. Today the Pickin' Patch earns a living from its fruits and vegetables. Pumpkins are the farm's biggest crop, but the farm also offers squash, gourds, mums, tomatoes, and other various types of fresh produce. My family and I have visited the Pickin' Patch a couple of times over the years. It's a great place to visit in the Autumn. If you need pumpkins then you will find a huge selection here. You can pick out a pumpkin right outside the country store or you can grab a wheelbarrow and head straight to the Pumpkin Patch to find the most perfect pumpkin. My wife and I had a nice "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"-themed photo shoot in the pumpkin patch with our son who was dressed as Linus. Afterwards we explored the store where you can find plenty of fresh produce, apple cider, pies, fresh honey, and various jellies, jams and sauces. Bakery Boys food stand is parked at The Pickin' Patch during the Autumn. Customers can get fried dough, deep-fried oreos, apple fritters, donuts, hot chocolate, hot or cold cider, coffee, lemonade, and other tasty treats. Pickin Patch is currently not a place for PYO but it is still a cute picturesque farmstand great for simple family activities. They have food stands with apple cider donuts and apple cider. The donuts aren't overly sweet which I loved! There are lots of pumpkins prepicked and placed around the farm stand and in the empty field to the side. They also have a variety of local apples and other produce. Farmstand cashiers are not the most friendly, but it's a small enough part to not ruin the whole experience. read more

Always interesting to see people criticize a farm for not having vegetables when it is NOT IN SEASON. This place is a very solid family farm in the heart of Avon. We come here for years. Sure, it's nothing fancy but they have great fruit and vegetables IN SEASON. And even better, you can PYO. Strawberry season is about 2-3 weeks here and while they are in season, they are AWESOME. Picked 6 pounds today for about $16 or so. So, go to this place from June through September. You won't be disappointed then. read more

Got there and no hay rides. Pumpkins were already off the vine and couldn't actually pick your own. Decided to treat our grandson to apple fritters. What a waste of money. The fritters were deeply fried and the oil they were fried in needed changing. Basically they were blobs of grossness. We threw them away. A very disappointing day. We've been going there for 30+ years. Time to look for a new place. read more

My husband and I had gone to Lyman's and were disappointed so we came here then right after and it was like a night and day experience. The hay ride was super fun and then our hunt began to try and find our perfect pumpkins. $40 for two pumpkins because they're charged by weight is a bit outrageous, but I guess that's how it's done our here (my family are pumpkin farmers in Indiana, I'm biased). Still, it was a super enjoyable day and the pumpkins looked great for Halloween, so we will probably be back next year for some more. read more

Great spot for family fun! We went on a crowded October weekend two weeks before Halloween. They had beautiful and fairly priced pumpkins, white pumpkins, gorgeous gourds of all sizes, mums, tons of treats (donuts, cider, honey, jam, etc), vegetables, apples and much more. They do hayrides out to the patch for picking, the kids really love it. The little store is great and although the lines look long sometimes, everything moves quickly. They take cash and cards. My boyfriend and I swung by this place last week specifically to satisfy a powerful craving for apple cider donuts after a long hike. Sadly, they were out of apple cider donuts when we got there (5PM on a Sunday), but they did have apple fritters, thank the lord! We bought half a dozen fritters for about $4.50, and I happily went to town with the bowl of cinnamon sugar offered on the side. The fritters were excellent. Perfectly crispy on the outside, full of apple flavor on the inside, and heavenly with the cinnamon sugar on top. We actually got 7 fritters in our bag of half a dozen and it was the perfect amount for 2 people to share. The only thing that would have made it better is if they were hot. Given how late in the day it was, the fritters had gotten cold, but they were still plenty crispy. Hot, freshly fried fritters would take it to a whole new level. In addition to fritters, they sell apple cider, fried dough, and other classic festival junk food. They also offer pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, free tractor rides, and a little store selling other fresh vegetables and apple products. We ventured into the store and though we didn't buy anything, I loved how friendly the staff were. Even at 5PM on Saturday this place was packed, so they must be onto something good! We'll definitely be back before fall ends to pick up a pumpkin or two and indulge in more apple fritters. read more

Was driving by and stopped here because we saw the amount of cars parked outside and line for food and figured this place must be good. We were not disappointed. We had the apple fritters and cold cider. Both were phenomenal! While we we weren't in the market for pumpkins, we saw the selection and they looked great. There was also a wide selection of gourds, which you don't see everywhere. The pies looked yummy as well. Definitely worth a stop! They always have a wide variety of fresh fruit and veg, a huge pick your own offering and loads a jams, hot sauces and dressings. We recently went in looking for okra, but because of the massive flooding CT has had this summer, they had to replant most of their crop and okra should be ready in about 3 weeks. What I say about this farm.....We first visited since my daughter was few month old. 14 years later, I am still going there. Just picked so much cucumbers, beans..... so much fun to pick your fresh vegetables.
