Bring a wagon or good walking shoes as you will make a lot of "to the car" walks as you gather the variety of offered items. There is excellent signage on Farmington Avenue that leads you to a big lot behind the market. We saw a smallish number of eclectic vendors - a Jamaican food stand, a bakery, a few produce stands, a jewelry stand, an artwork stand, a Hartford Library on Wheels truck, and more. We made two purchases - a Nutella babka from Manchester's Wicked Good Bakes and a Jerk Barbecue Mushroom Patty Panada from Hartford's The Ital Juicery Company. I had an absolute blast at the Ital Juicery stand. They had three generations of charming and delightful women behind the counter. That Patty Panda (sort of a cross between an Empanada and a Jamaican Patty) was a good-sized portion, somewhat justifying the hefty $10 price tag, but the flavor was amazing. Smoky, savory, and spicy, I mean sneaky spicy. Not sure what kind of peppers were in there, but if you told me they were Jamaican Scotch Bonnets I would not be surprised. That afterburn lasted over half an hour. I'll definitely be on the lookout for The Ital Juicery Company when I make the rounds of upcoming Farmer's Markets. As for the West End Farmer's Market, they're open on Tuesdays between June and September from 4pm-7pm. The hours change slightly to 3pm-6pm in October. PRO TIP Five stars for their community service vibe. "The West End Farmers' Market of Hartford believes that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy and delicious food". When you first walk in, to the left is where you can get prepared foods, Peking duck, boba tea, Vietnamese coffee, juice, etc. The ladies working the counter were friendly and helpful. In the back is where you would find the meats and seafood. There's a produce section selling regular fruit and veggies as well as exotic ones. In the middle, you can find all the snacks, sauces, anything you would need to cook Asian Cusine. They also have frozen food items. On this visit, I purchased a persimmon fruit and some snacks. Wonderful setup, wonderful vendors and quality local products…read more I went to the farmers' market last week to pick up some produce (fresh peaches for the grill!) and left with my fill of fruits, veggies, vegan goodies, handmade soaps and a renewed appreciation for the farmers and artisans in this fabulous community. If you have time, get your tush over to the market on Thurs afternoons. You'll find tents of live music, tons of local goodies (grass fed meats, cheeses, baked goods, etc), and representation from great organizations (even the Community Farm of Simsbury was there!) Such a nice late morning/early afternoon break!

There were only two savory food trucks, NoRA, N2 coffee, and River Hog brewery with a limited number of samples this opening Thursday. I guess I would have liked more food variety. It was neat touring River Hog's space, though it sounds like it'll be a few months until they're up and running. But at least we can say, "We saw it when...!" There were some interesting tables with accessories and clothes to buy, but the selection was a bit limited. Worth checking out for sure, though I'll probably wait until deeper in the summer when there may be more vendors around.
