Great selection of tools and anything else you may need including sugaring supplies! Little bit of improvement needed on the welcoming side of customer service. Once you have someone to help you're all set. They become your personal Shopper. Only area that needs improvement is the cashiers up front to be a bit more welcoming. This place is amazing! They always have what we need and the employees seem happy to help you find what you need. The place is HUGE! It's a super cool hardware store, but has clothing, shoes, hats, houseware items, home decor, gifts and a wicked cool snack & candy selection. It's worth a trip just for the experience! If you need it, you'll probably find it here. The pet store upstairs is a must visit if you're here with children or just love pets. This store reminds me of the old general stores where they carried a little bit of everything, except this one carries a lot of everything. They have free popcorn for you to munch on while you shop, or kettle corn bagged up for you to buy. I don't even know where to start when it comes to the remaining items that they sell here, but if you don't visit while in Newport, you're doing yourself a disservice. read more

One stop shopping in old downtown Newport. The Pick & Shovel is a hidden gem, as you can get it all here from an ice cream cone to nuts, bolts, sheet rock, lumber, raw local honey and maple syrup, hunting gear, pet supplies, curtains, plumbing supplies, and more. The old building is an entire city block and rambles on and on, you can really get lost inside. One of the last good shopping destinations in downtown, I hope they can continue with the good service and prices in this challenging in the Northeast Kingdom. read more

7/21/09 - Just made my annual visit and found out that this ice cream stand is named Tim & Doug's. Still the best place to get ice cream in Newport. I'm sure I will hit it again before going home. When I want ice cream in Newport, I think of the Pick & Shovel Hardware store. This is a gem of an ice cream stand that you must hit if you are in town. It's a walk up window attached to the hardware store but the quality and creations of the ice cream are the best. Go there and enjoy! read more

I always celebrate my return to Newport by stopping by the Pick & Shovel for a gigantic chocolate/vanilla twist with rainbow sprinkles. Where else in America can you find an ice cream stand attached to the town hardware store? The ice cream business is actually called "Tim & Doug's," but I haven't cottoned to that name so far. I call it "Pick & Shovel," which is more like an essential summer experience than just an ice cream or hardware store. I returned for a second time this trip to try their Maine Walnut Maple on a sugar cone--also delightful. Another benefit to this wonderful little enterprise is it's terribly cheap. An enormous soft serve with sprinkles, a double scoop of ice cream on a waffle cone and a healthy serving of rainbow sherbet only put us back $6. Hooray! The Pick & Shovel proper has also really expanded its wares over the years. You can buy everything from lawn furniture to actual picks and shovels to winter coats to tropical fish here. read more

i sold rats to pick and shovel pet store i bought 2 in they didnt tell me anything was wrong with my rats until 2 weeks after supposeingly they had mites . my rats are clean have nothing wrong with them they have been giving me the run around since ive started back up with them raiseing there rats . they wanted me to take all my rats thats over 20+ to the vets that would have been over 600 and my vet told me they dont do rats so she told me to wash them all in dawn soap and that she supposeingly clear up anything and since i dont work i have no money coming dont trust pick and shovel to raise any of there animals they will tell u good things then start trouble and find issues with them read more

A great little summer stand with ridiculously low prices. I'm from Burlington but have a lake house in Newport. We frequently visit the Pick & Shovel for ice cream. We like it enough to go when it is just me, my wife and kids and also as a common stop when we have guests. About 8/10 visitors comments how low the prices are relative to the size of the goodies. P.S. The Pick & Shovel itself is a place to behold. It is a weird blend of hardware store, appliance store, lumber yard, clothing store, and more. It should be a tourist stop. It is hard to find things and easy to get lost in the maze of attached buildings but they are almost sure to have just about anything available except for groceries. read more

Everytime we visit to the North Country, we have to stop in at Tim and Dougs, for the VERY BEST ICE CREAM!, no doubt hands down absolutely finger licking! We live in GA, so we don't get there as often as I would like too, but for everyone who may consider it, it is well worth the drive! The ice cream is not premium Ben and Jerry's variety but is an airier lighter variety and is cheaply priced and sold in large sized portions no matter which size you chose. I bought for 5 people and paid less than $10. It was one of those moments when you know you are in a remote area. The ice cream is a loss leader for the wonderful Hardware shop. Check out the clothing, gifts, and full scale pet and supplies shop on the second floor. We always spend a couple of hours there. Take a walk through the downtown. Walk on the lakefront. Newport is a relaxing nontouristy humble modest town for locals to run errands in Not glitzy like Stowe. read more

Actually I would give the hardware store five stars but the ice cream tastes like cold whipped Crisco to me. I tried it a second time because there are not many places to get ice cream in Newport, but both times it landed in the trash. It might be good enough to serve as a base for lots of toppings but not to eat straight as I tried to do. There are better options on the road to Derby, iin Derby, and (in the opposite direction) in Troy. read more
