I can literally smell the food driving into Piñones as I write this review. That smell is divine! I was in PR on a vacation with my gf in November and we fell so in love with this area that we came back every day to enjoy their food and beaches. It's so awesome that you can just park and walk up and down the road to try so many different foods. Each and every one just as good as the last. It's literally a fried foods and grilled meats paradise. There are so many great places to grab tasty drinks aka Piña Coladas and delicious food and walk over to the beach and enjoy them. FYI: The people here are so nice and very friendly. Definitely one of my favorite areas of PR and I'm looking forward to coming back soon. I miss you Piñones!!!

This may have been one of my favorites places to visit during our vacation in PR! The history of the area alone was amazing and breathtaking. Seeing so many Afro Puerto Ricans really made my day. The community was so nice and the food was so delicious as well! It did rain on us but that didn't stop the show at all. One tip to all new comers, when you go to the shacks for some food cover your self up if you're in a swim suit.

This is one of the funnest spots to visit near San Juan. Part of it is in Carolina and part in Loíza. There are tons of restaurant and stands selling mainly seafood. I've been to several of the stands and they are generally the same. It's hard to wrong, but my favorites are Iguana and Rinconcito Latino. There are a couple beaches down the long stretch of road. They are kid friendly beaches with light waves. Piñones also has a bike trail, a state forest, and a lake.

This beach is a very calm beach and is suitable for families and for children. The good thing is there are a lot of places to eat near by. Piñones es una playa muy tranquila apta para todas las edades. Lo bueno es que tambien hay muchos lugares de comer cerca.

the beaches in Pinones are quite different then famous san Juan beaches- no buoys, no lifeguard- no shower-no parking areas. Some beaches are quite nice, others are rocky. windy and rough waves. so these beaches are not known for swimming. but hey, this area is known for its food. Here you will find the best Alcapurrias, Bacalaito, and other local foods. Piñones is the area that surrounds the PR-187 from Carolina to Loíza -- a sandy road that is replete with restaurants and chinchorros, bordered by the Piñones State Forest on the south and the Atlantic Ocean on the north Sundays are the busiest and most interesting days to go to Piñones since most kiosks are open. Locals prefer this area and tourists prefer San Juan. finding parking can be tough on weekends.

My wife, two teenage sons (16 yrs, 14 yrs), and I drove along Route 187 in early April 2022 to see the beaches of Pinones. While this route is surprisingly close to San Juan, it has a very different vibe from the resort areas of San Juan. Pinones is a natural beach with authentic street food kiosks and provides a window into the life of many Puerto Rican families. On the plus side, it gives you a glimpse of local culture. We especially loved Playa Vacia Talega (the long stretch of beach along Route 187 which is far away from San Juan - closer to Loiza). For a detailed review that I wrote, please go to https://www.yelp.com/biz/playa-vacia-talega-lo%C3%ADza. On the minus side, the roadside of Pinones is filled with trash, which spoils the natural beauty of the area. Also, parking can be hard to find when it gets busy (just find a spot anywhere on the side of the road). Based on our day trip, I can understand why many tourists avoid coming here. First, it's hard to discern the quality of food at kiosks. Second, Spanish must be used when speaking with locals here. Third, there are no clean, public restrooms that are easily accessible from the beaches. Lastly, seeing trash everywhere along the highway was not appealing. That said, I think Playa Vacia Talega is a gem of a beach that is family-friendly and well worth a visit!

Food was seasoned to perfection. This place was really busy but the food came out quick and we had a big party. Definitely recommend checking them out if you're in the area.

This is a must visit area when in PR. The area is vibrant and alive. Lots of eatery establishments, adult beverages, the beach, shopping, etc. The music is awesome from one vendor to the next.

I come here for the beach and alcapurrias. Late night music and a few beers. A cool place to relax and enjoy yourself .

Definitely a "must visit" place to stop for an authentic experience. Good vibes. Good food. Amazing people. We stopped here after a day of exploring Loíza. You really feel culture and community here.

We went to the kiosk to eat street food and it did not disappoint. My fave for Empanadas and bacalaito was which is toward the beginning and the best Pina Coladas was Las Reina de la PC was the best I had during my whole trip.

We ordered the seafood variety, and it had texture and taste that makes us understand why this is the regional specialty. The servers recommended osso bucco, and it was rich, savory perfection. There were many things I wanted to try on the menu and opted for the chefs special of Red Snapper. It was delicious. I got the whole fish which isn't something I usually see so there was some bone manipulation but the fish was tasty and tender. So good. It came with fried plantains which was a nice compliment to the fish. Service was excellent. Our server really helped us through the menu and made good suggestions. I rated it lower because I was frustrated with one thing. Usually when I have to reserve open table spots with my credit card, the charge is temporary and goes away when I show up. For whatever reason, this one said it would apply the $40 to my bill which I forgot to check for. The end result was me paying an extra $40 which is wrong. We left the next day so I could not go back and I tried DMing but no luck. It's unfortunate because we really liked the experience.

We passed several inviting open air restaurants as we neared the beach and my only regret is not having time to stop for a bite! We parked on a grassy area across from the beach, which was convenient and I was thankful it was not full on this pretty Saturday afternoon. We crossed the busy street carefully with our coolers and trekked alongside the pavement until we saw people. This is definitely a family beach. Loud music and conversations emanated from beach blankets all over the sand. There were available spots, but not many. My favorite part of this beach was the small rock outcropping which held back the larger waves and made a shallow swimming area much like a calm swimming pool. Small groups were able to stand and enjoy the water without the need to struggle against the current. The beach was natural, so palm fronds and seaweed were scattered about, but it was also clean. Trash cans were lined up at regular intervals so there was no litter. Due to the proximity to the airport, planes took off frequently nearby. It was loud, but also cool to see the planes fly so close overhead. It was fun to spend an afternoon the same way that so many local residents spent their weekend days. Next time I'm stopping for food!

Honestly, that's a bit pricy in my opinion, but it's worth the money if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself. You are literally paying for someone to drive you to the attractions and that's it though. Our tour guide didn't visit the cave and didn't swim at the waterfall. The cave and waterfall were enjoyable experiences. The two star rating is primarily for the service provided by our tour guide Angel. Angel arrived promptly. He was an affable, young handsome twenty something. He picked us (party of 2) up in a minivan and said there'd be another two people joining us. He picked up another couple at a nearby hotel. The other couple were of Puerto Rican decent and one of them was a native of the island. We sat in the back of the van adjacent to the rear speakers, the male tour guest sat in the middle of the cabin and his girlfriend sat in the passenger seat. Angel and the other couple laughed and talked the entire trip in Spanish. Angel also blared loud Spanish rock/pop music throughout the ride without regard for us (the customers). He made no attempt to include us in the conversation and only talked to us a few times the entire day. Once was while helping us order lunch and another time was while the other couple was swimming at the waterfall. (My sister and I didn't swim) He also talked to us before picking them up and after dropping the off at their hotel. Other than that it was as if we were invisible. Generally speaking, it's not the job of the tour guide to entertain guests so I don't care that he didn't talk to us. It didn't bother me that they were speaking in Spanish either. My problem was that Angel didn't provide the same level of service to ALL of us that day. He seemed to forget that he was working. He wasn't hanging out with his friends for the day. I get that he probably had a cultural connection with the other tourists, but that shouldn't have affected the way he did his job. At one point we got out of the car and all walked towards the waterfall. Angel began to point something out to the other tourists in Spanish. It seemed to be about the location, but he was clearly talking to them since he was well aware of the fact that we did not speak Spanish. I thought that was a bit rude because at that point he was blatantly excluding us from the conversation. Either make an effort to include everyone or don't talk to anyone at all. We were all tourists... we all PAID for the same experience. If the other couple had been white or another nationality (not of Latin/Hispanic decent) then Angel's behavior would've been different. My point is that it shouldn't matter who is on the tour. Everyone should be treated the same. Angel also drove much too fast at times in my opinion. He took curves and turns daringly fast without regard for how we (the paying customers) may have felt. The attractions were far from the city in an extremely mountainous region. The ride was bumpy with a lot of twists and turns. On two occasions I saw him cut drivers off as they were trying to merge on the highway. I don't think that he was purposely being reckless. I just don't think he's even aware of the way his driving may impact the tourists he encounters. In my opinion, he drove the way many young guys drive... fast and fearless. The problem with that was he was WORKING. He wasn't cruising with his buddies. He should be more conscious of his behavior and how it may be impacting his customers. I went on another tour via Tours by Locals and our tour guide provided excellent customer service. He was a careful driver, he asked us if the radio volume was ok and genuinely cared about the quality of the service he was providing. He was older though and had been giving tours for years so he understand that the needs of the customers is the only thing that mattered. I gave him a $20 tip and he earned every penny. I didn't give Angel a tip because I was unhappy with his level of service to us. He drove us to and from the attractions, but we paid for that. The tip isn't mandatory and shouldn't be expected by the service provider. It should be earned. I always tip and believe that people should do so generously or stay home so I felt bad about not tipping Angel, but he failed to earn it from US so I decided not to give him one. I did speak with a young lady from PR tours prior to the tour to confirm and found her pleasant and professional. I don't recall her name. This review isn't a reflection on PR tours or the overall experience I had dealing with them. I'd absolutely book a tour with PR Tours again in the future.
