We had a very difficult time finding the actual Charco and when we did the only way to access it…read morewas by swimming into muddy water. We opted not to swim and just observed the Charco from a high point on the "trail". There is very little signage in the area directing you to the Charco or any "trails". I use quotation marks because there really are no trails, just the access road used by the water authority. At first, we drove completely past the Charco, despite using the supposedly exact GPS coordinates. We stopped and asked a guy doing yard work around his house for directions and that got us on the right road. We then parked, as suggested by other reviewers, at a private lot at the top of the hill where a local homeowner had small lot parking available for $3. We then walked down the hill to the river. There's a tiny overgrown sign directing you to the Río. We went down the steep hill and saw the water authority's little blue station. Then we wondered how to get to the Charco. There are no signs, nothing. We followed what appeared to be trail along a cliff but had to turn back at an impasse. The "trail" was very overgrown and full of fallen trees and brush. We then ran into some local youth and they directed us to follow the river. We walked then waded down the river for awhile. Note, if you're going to try to check this out, you will want some good water shoes with lots of traction. We reached a small area where the youth appeared to have camped earlier. Here's where you could potentially swim further in and observe the caves. I climbed back up on the "trail" and could see some of the vista I'd seen on YouTube and Instagram. Looks nice but if you don't want to swim in questionable looking water, not the best. The complete lack of trails and appropriate signage seriously detracted from our experience. Unless you're a hard core adventurer willing to both hike and swim with the appropriate gear, I would not recommend visiting this Charco. Also, as there are no actual trails I would not recommend this for kids or anyone with mobility issues. Go the El Yunque instead where the trails are paved and well maintained.

Some more info about this spot/Place- this spot is on Route 187 between Isla Verde and the Rio Grande. means - if you are planning to Visit Playa Flamenco (which is a Must do- cause it is one of the top beaches in the world) and if you are coming back to San Juan to catch a flight then I would suggest taking this route 187. a couple of reasons for this- 1) Pinones area which is famous for its street/roadside small/decent food joint - you don't wanna miss if you are a foodie 2) Scenic Route 3) You wanna save money on toll skipping Route-66 (no sense paying rental company for its transponder and $10/day)

There are also food carts & places to grab a cold drink or a snack if you want to take a break. I grabbed a cherry (it's my fave flavor)piragua & it was refreshing b/c it was so hot outside. If you've never had one,a piragua is a popular cone shaped shaved ice topped w/ your choice of flavored syrup. Kind of like a sno cone but it's a PR classic treat. The Raíces Fountain @ the end of the paseo is a must-see & stunning! It's a gr8 spot for pictures,& the surrounding views of the historic city walls & waterfront are absolutely stunning! Whether you're visiting Old San Juan for the 1st time or returning to explore more of its history & culture, Paseo de la Princesa is a scenic stop that's well worth adding to your itinerary. I have to say that this was my favorite experience of our recent visit to Old San Juan. It's just a…read morebeautiful walk that starts near Calle del Recinto Sur at the end of the fort wall. You'll immediately see a tree and lantern lined street with many local vendors and benches. I'm not sure if they're set up there on a daily basis or not. We saw them on a Saturday morning. You'll eventually get to the promenade called Bastion de la Derecha de San Justo y Pastor. This is where you'll find the American Heritage Plaza, Children's Park, Princess Garden, and the old prison that is now a tourism company. The real draw is the Raices Fountain and the beautiful view of the ocean & fortified walls. But, it doesn't end there. The promenade continues on along the fortress wall that leads you to a very bizarre park with a public artwork by Carmen Inés Blondet called Crecimiento ("Growth"). Honestly, I thought it was some kind of historical spiked barrier to ward off enemies. It's definitely interesting to see. It's a beautiful walk that takes you under the Garita del la Fortaleza which is actually where I snapped a great picture of the San Juan Gate during one of our previous visits. We knew at that point that we were close to the prize. The Puerta de San Juan presented itself to us. It's a beautiful sight to see. There's a small pier as well as a park that is dedicated to Isabella I of Castile. She's a very significant figure in the discovery of Puerto Rico. At this point, you can choose to walk through the gate to connect to the old convent and cathedral or walk along Paseo del Morro. Just keep in mind that there is construction going on right now on the castle path. This means that you'll have to turn back around and exit at the gate. The reopening of this path is something to look forward to in the future. It's a nice way to see El Morro from a different perspective. It was time worth spent on a cool & breezy Saturday morning with lots to see along the way. A great relaxing walk for residents and travelers alike.
