She is a remarkable teacher, with the ability to fine tune each movement within each exercise to every student lucky enough to have her as an instructor. Petie is extremely knowledgeable about the human body. She can explain each exercise and relate it to its benefits, both musculoskeletal and neurological. Petie can break down very complex movements and exercises so her students can understand exactly how to perform them with the most benefit and without injury. Petie does this by giving many, concrete analogies to her students so they can truly visualize what even minute movements should look and feel like. I have been a student of this amazing teacher for over a decade for both Pilates, Gyrokinesis, and Gyrotonic. I recently started taking Barre Class there, as well. In addition to helping with the usual achey, stuck, injured and injury prone parts of my body, Petie has helped me wake up parts of my body that I didn't even know existed or could feel or move. After 3 years, I continue to be awestruck by Petie's knowledge of the workings of the body, how she is able to modify movement to so many different bodies, how she seems to know just where all of my edges are and how to challenge me there, resulting in awareness and connection and more freedom of movement instead of injury, and how much she knows about how our bodies are interwoven with so many other dimensions of how we perceive and experience and live. Physique has been a life changing practice ever since my first Pilates session with Petie. After childbirth (an emergency csection) I was left with a weakened core and an abdomen that resembled jello. Before moving upstate, I had taken several Pilates classes in NYC and was never able to find an instructor that could reengage my mind-body connection in the way that Petie could in just my first session with her. Her attention to detail - such as catching the slightest curl of a toe and her knowledge of the anatomy was what I was looking for in my training sessions. She has since introduced me to Gyrotonic as well and I have a newfound obsession. I feel stronger, more balanced and aware. Physique has been an amazing experience for me. I've studied Pilates, Gyrotonic and Gyrokensis in NYC and other locations for 30 years, and have never had the experience that I have had with Petie. I have studied with Petie since her opening in Kingston in 2004, and would never study anywhere else. It's one thing to teach Pilates and Gyrotonic, but it's another to care about what you're doing, being sincere, insightful about anatomy (like no one I have ever known!) and helping each individual involved and knowing how to work with them.
