The…read morefirst time I went to so many doctors visits (one urgent care, two family medicine, two ENT, two neurologists) that did very little to help me understand why I had vertigo and how to treat it which left me with lingering dizziness for almost a year and eventually required medication. Becca heard my history and current issues and immediately identified my current problem as BPPV by using her fancy video eye recording goggles. Based on my eye movements she moved me through a procedure with the goal of moving the crystals back into the proper canal. I was rather dizzy and nauseous after the procedures. Becca was hopeful after my first visit that everything would be back to normal but I had some residual issues and she told me I should come back for more treatment. At our second visit she noted more eye movement with her fancy eye video goggles and we went through a different procedure to treat. I was less dizzy/nauseous after this time and Becca encouraged me that she thought this treatment should do the trick. I had some vertigo again at home and texted Becca feeling very concerned and she quickly replied and reassured me that the crystals were most likely still settling into place. At our final visit Becca tested me again with the fancy goggles and she saw no eye movements, hooray! I did have some lingering issues with my vision and complex visual fields triggering some dizziness and she gave me exercises to do to help reset my brain/vision. After a few weeks of the exercises I felt back to normal. I was slightly nervous about the self pay but comparing the cost to my husbands Pt visits to an in network PT I realized the prices were much lower at Nuero Base Camp. Becca provided me super bills which I submitted to my insurance for partial credit towards my deductible. They even rejected a few for very nit-picky reasons and Becca updated them for me for resubmission. I wish I had been referred to a Physical Therapist like Becca that specialized in dizziness by any of the many doctors I saw during my first bout of vertigo. It would have saved me a lot of time, money, and health anxiety. I would recommend Becca to anyone struggling to understand their dizziness or vertigo.

Before I ever became a patient, I went in in person and made it very clear: check my insurance first. I told them if my insurance covered the visits, I would move forward. After over a week, they contacted me and confidently told me my insurance was verified, that I would only pay $25 per visit, and that I was covered for 10 visits per year. Based on THEIR confirmation, I agreed. Now I am being hit with monthly bills out of nowhere. Here are the facts: I already paid $50 out of pocket My insurance was charged $602.66 I then received an additional bill for $205.56 No clear explanation. No warning. No transparency. I have called multiple times, left voicemails, and tried to resolve this like an adult. No one calls back. No one takes responsibility. No one follows up. The complete lack of professionalism and accountability is shocking. Even worse, their own website lists: New Patient Chiropractic (60 min): $200 Chiropractic (30 min) So how do you justify charging insurance over $600 for a basic visit? This feels misleading at best and unethical at worst. If they had been honest from the beginning, I would have never agreed to treatment. Instead, I trusted them to verify my insurance correctly--and that trust was clearly misplaced. This experience has been stressful, frustrating, and infuriating. Tired of back pain? Call Jake…read more Two years of a recurring back pain that I could not make go away was solved by Jake in the just a few session and couple months of work at home. I tried other PT's over the years that seems to just print out general exercises that did not seem to help and I kept re-injuring it over time. Jake took the time to help explain where my body is not balanced and why. He gave me both regular PT exercises plus specific "quick stretching" exercises to do in-between meetings during the work day. Plus, Jake took the time to review my current workout program and cut out a few items he thought were creating a risk of re-injury. In short: Shine cares more about getting your money than helping you…read more Why: I was in-between insurance and limited on cash and options to treat my chronic back pain. Shine was in my neighborhood and had a "generous" 25% off if you pay in full at the time of your visit. I walked out paying $168 for less than an hour of PT and in much more pain than I arrived in. At first contact, the owner was very friendly & energetic. I gave her a brief history of my pain, current medical treatment and stressed concerns of not getting help beyond a 'first consultation'. She assured me that they would give me additional help to hold me off until I had insurance and could come in regularly. Before my apt when turning in my paperwork and payment we revisited this concern and she once again reassured me. She also provided me paperwork to apply for 'financial hardship'. During the assessment I was told to bend and move in ways that were slightly painful, which I assumed was normal and did so carefully. One twist sent shooting pain through my spine similar to the pain when my back injury first occurred. I mentioned this pain to her and told her I needed to lie down so I didn't pass out. I asked her if she was going to help me "undo" whatever just happened and she assured me I would be fine before I left, and continued on with the assessment while I was sitting/lying. She gave me one muscle strengthening exercise to do. She did not attempt to do any pain release or muscle relaxation or assessing the new pain. When I checked-out with the owner, she was trying to guilt me into making two more immediate appointments and stressed the importance to see me twice a week for almost two months. I reminded her of my insurance/financial situation and the compromise was making two appointments once my insurance went into effect. I told her that I worked 8-5 M-F. She kept trying to get me into consecutive appointments early/mid-day and respond in irritation that it conflicted with my work. I went home and had to lie down and alternate ice & heat on my back all evening. In the morning I had to go in to work late because I was in so much pain I had to see my chiropractor, forking out more money. It took a few days for the pain to subside. Obviously I canceled my appointments. (FYI: They keep your CC on file and charge a $45 cancellation fee if you don't cancel over 24hours in advance. A cancellation fee I understand, but $45!?!?) After three emails and four weeks without any response I finally got their decision that I didn't qualify for 'financial hardship'. (They only look at income vs. medical/CC debt, NOTHING else. (Of course my only medical/CC debt was the $168 from their appointment.) As a "thank you" for my business they offered a free yoga class. This seems like a nice gesture except that anyone who walks in the door gets a free first yoga class. When I was coming in as a new patient they were quick to respond with enthusiasm by phone and email. Once I canceled my appointments their communication near stopped. This communicates to me that their customer service is great as long as they're guaranteed to be making money off you. I have shared my experience in more detail to other people who have gone through PT for similar back issues and they all have had many better/thorough experiences, especially in regards to pain assessment and treatment for pain relief even in their first sessions. During my recent yearly check up my General Practitioner even told me not to return and made a referral for another PT incase I chose to continue in the path of PT. I understand that services cost money and don't want to devalue PT and like services. However, at Shine these "services" are not worth the monetary value. I would be willing to pay twice as much for something that was truly worth the value. All this to say: I wasn't impressed with Shine. I don't like writing such in-depth negative reviews but I'm hoping to save someone else the experience I had. There are plenty of other PT in Portland with great reviews, I should have done more research and not made my decision based on timing and convenience.

I feel like I understand why the things I've done have caused pain and why various stretches and exercises mitigate that pain. It's the old "teach a man to fish" thing. Now that I "know how to fish", I'm well positioned to avoid hurting myself in the future and to make various tweaks to the stretches and exercises to help me get the results I want. I feel a little silly acknowledging this now, but before going to Pedal PT I thought that the various forms of pain I was experiencing while biking or doing computer work were "just part of getting older" and "something I just need to deal with". I understand now that this is not the case. Small adjustments to your bike or to the ergonomics of your computer usage will often make the discomfort go away. And if not, there are usually stretches and exercises you could do to heal. As someone who bikes everywhere and uses a computer 10+ hours a day, I am extremely glad that I took the time to address the issues I was having, and I'm extremely grateful to Pedal PT for their help.
