Pre-COVID: So I actually came here by accident. I was looking for a yoga class through ClassPass and read the following description for the Strength Basics Class with Sara: "Geared towards those new to exercise, resuming after a layoff, or coming back after an injury...you will be working on perfecting your form and your foundation of strength". And I loved the class even though it wasn't yoga. There's some mat work, some barre band work, some light weights. I actually really enjoyed the pace, as much as I love pushing myself till I'm dead the focus on form is so important, especially because I am one of those people who had an injury. The class size was also great - just 5 people! It was easy to get personalized attention in that setting. And the music wasn't blasting. Really, all great things. They have key pad lockers, showers, and mats for you to use - I love that I didn't have to carry anything extra with me. Also a water cooler in case you like to travel so light you didn't even bring a water bottle. This is a gem that works with whatever level your at and offers you personalized oversight to build lasting exercise habits centered around good form. I can't wait to come back! read more

I have been working with Julia for several years now and she is excellent at designing a strength training program that challenges me but takes into account my injuries and limitations. Even virtually Julia notices and tweaks my improper form so I can get stronger and avoid injury. Julia is an awesome trainer who really cares about her clients' well-being and goals! I have also worked with Sarah Currie on my nutrition plan and she is very patient, helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the science of eating to maximize your energy and performance. I always feel so comfortable talking about my issues and concerns with Sarah to create a game plan that will work for me. I tried Yoga classes in the past, and as a beginner I found them to large and never went back. I tried a yoga class, at Physical Equilibrium, with Nicholas and enjoyed it very much. I had never employed a trainer before because I didn't want to be hounded to workout. I am motivated enough but after re-injuring my knee while training for my first Ironman, I realized that I needed help. Sara helped me work back from the injury and got me ready for my race. Just weeks before race day I had a bike accident and separated my shoulder. Because of the training we did before my accident and then some very concentrated training in those last few weeks I was able to not only compete but compete well! I randomly found this place on yelp 2 years back. It was a great find! I interacted with Sarah initially who helped me identify my fitness goals and partnered me with the right trainer. I got partnered with Jessica D and did 12 sessions 2 summers ago, and 15 sessions this past summer.Jessica is a great trainer and really keeps you engaged and educated about working out/fitness. I love this place. I redeemed my Fitness Access pass a few months ago and I can't wait to come back! Unfortunately, while my heart (and hips) say yes, my bank account says no ): (Their prices are by all means fair and comparable to other personal training gyms just FYI) I initially emailed Sara and received a response within 20 minutes. TWENTY. No gym, trainer, family member even, has responded that quickly. And it wasn't some carbon copy response. She was happy to honor my voucher (A+), told me to pick a time and day and gave me three trainers to choose from (A+++) The trainer's name escapes me at the moment but she was great! We worked on my upper body, as requested and at the end, was the most amazing stretching session of my life. The gym was immaculate. There's lockers, showers, towels, water. The two Sara's, the owners are very accommodating and professional. You get a lot of personal attention because the classes are small. Cherry has a really challenging Pilates class. She works you hard but she cares and is very dedicated. Shirley's toning and stretching classes were very beneficial for me. She really knows how to stretch out the body and relieve pain through hands on bodywork.The only waste of time and money was working with this personal trainer. He no longer works there. He thought that his poop didn't stink because he was a bodybuilder and an amateurish actor. I could tell he was very disdainful of me and did not want to be there. read more

I truly love this place and would recommend it to anyone. I have a pretty busy schedule and whenever I bought a gym membership in the past, I found myself canceling about a month later because I wouldn't go. I've never considered myself an active person and felt pretty intimidated whenever I would walk into a gym because I wasn't sure what to do and was too consumed with the thought that people were watching me do everything wrong. I found Physical Equilibrium on Yelp while considering signing up for yet another gym membership. After researching a number of places, I visited in-person one evening and met with Shirley, who is an absolute gem. She answered every question I had, was extremely nice to me, and helped put all of my concerns at ease. At first, I was intimidated by the prices being that my pockets are far from "deep," but that very night, I signed up for my first class and I am so glad that I did. After I took my first few classes, I realized that the price is totally worth it and definitely an investment I was willing to incorporate into my life. The classes are super fun and the instructors I have had a chance to meet with (Shirley, Nick, and Julia) are knowledgeable and very pleasant to work with. I have only participated in the group classes, but I LOVE them. The classes are not cluttered which allows for the instructors to interact more personally with each person. At Physical Equilibrium, it is clear that quality matters most. The classes are just an hour, but I always have so much fun that I wish they were longer. Ever since forever, I have always dreaded anything involving physical activity (ex: gym class...a true nightmare I am glad I never have to revisit). For the first time in my life, I actually feel super excited to be physically active and always look forward to signing up for my next class. If my availability would allow me to, I'd be taking classes every day. Not only am I having fun, but I am also learning workouts and techniques I can do on my own to reach my goal and avoid hurting myself through trial and error. When I realized I had taken over 180 classpass classes, was training with a trainer, and running on my own time seeing little results, sustained an injury, on top of a childhood injury that resulted in tendonitis still pursiing daily bootcamp classes in which did not have teachers who were aware of proper injury modifications, I knew it was time for a change! I was determined to find something that was better suited for me and my fitness routine! I searched diligently for a gym or trainer looking for something so specific you would think it didn't exist. I hoped to find a trainer that was educated in post-rehab, experienced in running and run coaching, personal treatment plans for weight training and just an all around support without all of the glam. Just REAL strengthening, real changes, real knowledge and real people! Sara and Sarah have created something truly amazing! I am pleased to have crossed paths with them and Physical Equilibrium. I genuinely believe they have changed my life, considering I can not only walk with out pain but I can RUN and just ran my first HALF with the support and motivation of Sara! These ladies will challenge you by guiding you through a customized workout in a private gym. They are smart, encouraging and very knowledgeable. They are patient enough to help someone just learning weight training and experienced enough to coach triathletes. They offer nutritional counseling and outdoor workouts as well. I made an appointment with trainer Julia Halpin using my NY Fitness Passbook last week and had a great workout at Lift gym. Julia was down to earth and non-judgmental. She led me through a varied workout that included hills on the treadmill, stairs, core workout circuits, and weight machines all while making sure I was maintaining proper form. The gym was quiet, and fairly basic, but did the job. The locker room was clean and the showers were stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. They even had blow dryers and towels for your use. The process of setting up an appointment was easy and Sara was very communicative via email about what I would need to bring and any other instructions. I'm not looking to start a personal training program right now, but if I was, I would strongly consider working with Julia. read more

I have done personal training with Sara for about 3 years. Sara's approach is inspiring because she is tough AND kind - so I end up feeling great physically and mentally. She expects a lot and works me hard (which I love), but in a way that is relaxed enough that my workouts are fun, too (even better). She has a keen sense of how to challenge me, and she is always changing the workouts, incorporating everything from Pilates to yoga to dance in addition to more traditional fitness exercises like weight training and cardio workouts. She even gave me specific stretches to help my scoliosis. I worked out with her twice a week before my sister's wedding, and I loved how I looked and felt in my strapless dress, having lost 8 pounds and gaining muscle tone! Sara and Physical Equilibrium get my highest recommendation - I actually enjoy working out now, and I've seen the results. I had the good fortune of finding Physical Equilibrium this past January. Sara immediately responded to my email requesting information and thoroughly answered every question I asked. Her attention to detail went above and beyond the norm then and continues to this day. After having a meeting with her, she paired me with Jessica Desmond. I came in a runner with muscular imbalances, old nagging injuries and occasional pain. Over the past 6 months Jessica has realigned my body so I never run in pain anymore. Never. Absolute pros. I have done both the Central Park group training and private training. The trainers at this gym have Master's degrees. They didn't learn how to be trainers a few months ago at your local gym. They know what they are doing and not only will you get a good workout, you'll do it in a way that you won't hurt yourself. The Central Park workouts are fun and safe. You wouldn't catch me with one of those boot camp sergeants who are yelling at you at the top of their lungs but paying absolutely no attention to your form. Our bodies have to last a long time. If you're going to do a strenuous workout with a trainer or coach, you better be with someone who knows what they're doing. I have always worked with Sara D who is amazing. However, I am sure the other trainers are great because Sara is one of the owners and her standards are obviously high. read more

I was referred to Sarah Currie at Physical Equilibrium after a labrum tear in my hip had me limping around the city. It was miserable. I had to stop running for nearly a year. She assessed and put me back together again way better than she originally found me. We focused on healing and core strength and took it slow - before I knew it I was jogging then running again...and a much more confident athlete.
