Dropped by during recent visit to Calgary - place is tucked away inside the Madison. Parking was a hot mess during dinner hour - don't know the area so can't recommend where else you can park. Very busy at dinner, so plan ahead and give yourself time, in case you need to wait to be seated. Typical Chinese restaurant service - don't expect any top tier service, they did what was expected. Taste was nice and light - not overwhelming. Chicken was silky smooth and was great with the scallion oil. The clams - was more shell then meat, the meat was somewhere on the plate though, so you just got to look around. I really liked the brisket radish pot - sauce could use some work, as there was bits that seemed a little gloopy - however the food itself tasted great. I'd probably visit again - If I come back to Calgary. read more

Came here to have dim sum with family members and the portion sizes are very generous here. The food is pretty authentic and the staff are super friendly. Parking is limited but fine if you come early in the morning. read more

Phoenix Gate Chinese Cuisine - Chinese Near Me - Calgary, Alberta

Family came here on a Saturday after an action packed day of activities and running errands. This location is in a little strip mall with a very small parking lot so it was a challenge finding parking. Thankfully, a person pulled out when we came. But be prepared to park on the street or in the adjacent gravel lot. It looked like the businesses attached to the gravel lot had closed so not sure if you're allowed to park there. We have been to Phoenix Gate before but only to get frozen Siu Mai to go. We never have eaten there. This location has changed restaurants quite a few times. I remember when it used to be Tropika Malaysian Cuisine and then various Chinese restaurants over the years. We called ahead and they had a table waiting for us when we arrived. Good thing as it was packed. I noticed they were super efficient as well as tables left, they cleared it, and a new group sat. The food was excellent and they family thoroughly enjoyed their meal. We got 1 course Peking Duck - there were more wraps then at other places and the meat was tender. My wife craved for steamed fish so we also got the 1 course Ling Cod. The fish was flaky and came right off the bone. The kids love Fish Maw with Crab Meat soup so we had to get that. It was quite thick and tasty! My daughter wanted the Pork Belly and it was quite tender with good sauce. For veggies we ordered Stir Fry Snow Pea leaves which were also great. It was super busy at this restaurant and quite loud but we could still hold a conversation. Parking is a pain unfortunately. But other than that it was great and we will definitely be back. read more

Great restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. It's a bit crampy and loud at times , but, the food quality (and portion sizes ) and service is very good. I'd recommend it for your Chinese food fix. Just be aware ... they ding you 25cents for every takeout container or bag that you use for leftovers !! Minor issue really ... read more

This place is terrible. The manager at this restaurant is very rude told me to wash dishes if I don't give them big tips. She ruin my father dinner with family. Will not coming back again. Menu Prices not as advertised. read more

This cute little hole in the wall hidden in the basement of a building was a gem. If you need your traditional Chinese food fix in Calgary this is the spot for you. For a group of 4 people, we definitely ordered plenty of food. Got the Peking Duck which included a tofu/cabbage/duck soup and served with the tortilla styled wrapper. The Peking duck itself was cooked nicely and had crispy skin. Also ordered black pepper beef ribs, tong shing tsai and salt pepper squid. Super full by the end of the meal and had plenty of leftovers. The staff was very nice and friendly. Parking - In front of the building or street parking read more

Went for family dinner for 4 and it was very good overall! It was very busy at 6:30 pm, but were seated in 10 minutes. Ordered steamed chicken, fried rice, tofu hot pot, Gai Lan and peking duck. It was clean, good service and prices were fair. Total bill $80 read more

Excellent food, great selection, good portions and good service. One of the better Chinese restaurants in Calgary!

PHOENIX GATE - this is on Centre St N just south of 16 Ave under an apartment building. They do a Peking duck 3 course meal (wraps, fried rice, soup) for $40 which is one of cheapest in town and they give you so much meat. BONUS: they also sell frozen dim sum items that you can steam at home (cash only for these). So delicious! See pics for PKD, DS and the menus. read more

We ordered their Peking duck set meal - $128 that included 6 dishes. The dishes included duck two ways (soup and the wrap), sweet and sour pork, green beans, seafood vegetable medley, halibut and tofu. The sweet and sour pork and the duck dishes were my favourite. The batter used for the pork was very crisp and delicious. One of best I've had. The duck was really good as well. The wrap provided for the duck was thinly made which allowed you to savour the duck skin and the toppings. The portions were also huge for the price. Ground Parking can be difficult to find because this restaurant is also located at the base of a condo and a mini mall. There is underground parking available. This place gets busy so I recommend calling ahead for a reservation. read more

This restaurant is located inside the Madison, an apartment building with shops on the main floor. It replaces Tai Pan at its old location inside the mall. I have been here several times for dim sum and dinner. There is a good selection of dim sum, including the popular shrimp dumplings. This review is on their special set dinner combo with Peking duck. The Peking duck combo is said to be for 4 people. I went there with a bigger group so we ordered a few extra dishes, including the $8.88 daily special, which varies daily. The combo features 3 style of Peking duck: duck meat which you can wrap with cucumber and spring onion in a crepe (see picture), soup, and a stir-fried udon with duck meat. The combo also has other dishes including a stir-fried veggies with beef (see picture), a crispy fish (sole - see picture), and a lobster in ginger and green onion sauce (see picture - noodles extra $4). Overall, all the dishes have good portion sizes and flavour. Would definitely recommend to anyone who likes Peking duck or wants to try out a variety of dishes without much thinking. read more

Took my mother for dim sum, who can be very picky. She loved the food. First dish we received was fried ho fun in XO sauce. Very tasty and well cooked. The other stand out items were the beef rice crepes, decent portion with wonderful crepe and plenty of meat, steamed sponge cake, nice and fluffy and not overly sweet, and the steamed pork ribs, which had a nice chili flavour. The other items were decent but didn't stand out. Service was good and the food came out steaming hot. On the info from a previous review, I ordered some sticky rice wraps and steamed beef balls frozen for take home consumption. These were cash only but very good value. $20 for 12 decent sized sticky rice wraps and $6 for 1 lb of the beef balls. This may be my new go to dim sum place. read more

Came for dinner and had their peking duck course... it was so good, and not to mention, for a cheap price! The duck was juicy and we were provided with lots of meat. The dim sum here is good as well and probably the cheapest in town. Will definitely go back. read more

Plenty of parking in front of the stripmall and the restaurant was not busy on a Tuesday night. Came here with 4 of us tonight and got 4 dishes to share. The seafood fried rice was super fluffy and not greasy at all and was tasty. The snow pea shoots with oysters mushrooms, pineapple and sour pork was yummy and my favourite bass the cream sauce lobster on crispy noodles. Service was good and food was delicious would come back again read more

Tried out Phoenix Gate for the first time today. The menu is quite extensive and we finally ordered the following: Fish Maw with Crab Meat Soup - nicely done. Chef's Special Chicken served cold with a oily & salty ginger and onion sauce - delicious and huge chunks of chicken. Beef and Gai Lan in a garlic sauce - very tender gai lan and the beef was very tender as well Steamed Fish with a ginger and scallion sauce - it was good but the fish they had, had a lot of bones. Was difficult to eat. It was the "Wan Yi". Prawns with Vermicelli Pot - tasty..nice big prawns. Had to peel the prawns though. Steamed rice Dessert was the Red Bean Soup, on the house - nice touch to the end of the meal. Service was quite good. The lady who served us was a pleasant, older lady and she tried to speak some English and mostly Cantonese. We managed to communicate nonetheless. She told us to come back for their dim sum and their Peking Duck 3 course special for $39.99. Well, guess we gotta go back! read more

No different than other Chinese restaurants. Too much MSG! It's ok if you just want to fill your stomach! They also sell frozen dim sum. Poor quality and not very clean. They take cash for frozen food. I guess it's their way to avoid paying taxes! read more

Food is decent, service is appalling. Had family birthday dinner here last night. Place was 2/3 full but dwindled to less than 1/2 after being seated. We've been here many times (at least a dozen), it "was" our go-to Chinese restaurant, after last night I am looking for a new go-to. Waited 25 minutes to order only because we waved down the waitress (who was desperate need of an attitude adjustment). Based on our past experience, if you order all your food at once (including peking duck wraps), you get all your food first then the peking duck wraps arrive at the end. So this time we ordered just the peking duck wraps and waited to order the other items after this arrived. We tried to order our other dishes but the waitress did not understand english so asked for the older waitress who I knew did. Finally get our few dishes ordered - how do you get cauliflower when you order green beans? Sent that back and got a green bean dish but not what we ordered. Oh well, by this time we are quite hungry and we just ate it. If you go, be sure you can just point to the item you want on the menu otherwise you may be in for a surprise! Come on Phoenix Gate ..... you can do better than this! read more
