Great service, food, hours of operation and parking! The Genos Special is the Big Brother to the Hani! Don't waste your time at National when you can get the bigger and better tasting chicken pita here! Everything is visibly dirty. I couldn't even eat the hash browns because they were so oily, it was like eating a bite full of oil with some hash browns added in. The eggs almost looked transparent. I don't know what their cooking policy is, but clearly it's to use as much oil as possible. I wouldn't recommend eating here. Ever. I used to like Nicky D's down the street better but now I prefer Phoenix, and I'm really not sure why. In fact, on this date of April 9, 2020 I'm struggling to remember what going out to eat in a restaurant was even like. I think maybe at first the faux-50s styling of Phoenix kind of grated on me, but it wore my resistance down. I do like the goofy cow out front. It's a landmark in an area notably devoid of landmarks. They also have a guy doing the pee-pee dance painted on the men's room door just like the Fun Spot down in Orlando. The little two tops that cut away to the kitchen are my favorite thing about this particular Coney, though. It's the best of both worlds as far as sitting at a booth or the counter. As a veteran late night solo dinner I really like the chillness of this set up. They make a decent burger, the coneys could be crispier on the outside, breakfasts are decent but I've had better and I'd avoid the fish and chips and especially the perch, if it's even in stock. Service is adequate, not too memorable either way. Maybe the styling of this place bugged me cause it's trying too hard to look special and it's just not. My favorite Coney Island. The food is always delicious and the workers are great. Even the cooks ask if you need anything else. The hani (they call it Geno's Special) is the best that I've had. This use to be one of my fav coney islands to go to. I have frequent this place over the last 10 years and the quality has gone down. The burgers, steak, and chicken are charbroiled which makes the flavor amazing. The hash browns are thin and crispy, I do not care for those. The pancakes are bland, but the eggs are good and fluffy. Tonight it totally literally smelled like a pigsty. Like there was a heard of literally pigs near by and the gentleman was mopping. Extreme racism like I've e ever experienced before. I want to preface by saying I'm in my mid 40's. I came here to eat with some friends. Some other friends we know happen to come there too and sat at the booth next to us. We were not together nor did we drive together. The waitress, Ann, began to take our order and we immediately noticed she had a short fuse. After she finishes taking our order she began to take the order of our friends at the other table. I guess one of them asked for a hot dog cut in half and she refused to do it & told them she will not take their order. It was a given that we couldn't leave Michigan without eating at least one Coney Dog, and so we found ourselves at Phoenix Coney Island fairly late on a Saturday night. The inside has a very cool old-school diner vibe, and you can talk to (and see) the kitchen staff no matter where you sit. Obviously I ordered the Phoenix Coney Dog (all-beef hot dog is slit, filled with our tangy cheese sauce, grilled with two strips of bacon and garnished with our famous Phoenix chili with beans, raw onions and bold 'n spicy mustard). It's quite a concoction, this thing. As soon as the plate was set down in front of me, I knew it was going to be a knife-and-fork affair. The presentation may not be much - it's a sloppy mess presented on a bright-red plate - but this concoction sure hit the spot. The only problem I had was that the bread got super soggy and ultimately wasn't necessary. As it ridiculous as it sounds, I would, in the future, order this without any bread. read more

Had this place bookmarked for a while now. Well, now I can check if off....and move forward. Never looking back, lol. Eh it fit the bill. 5 hungry kids. Lots of food. Not a bad price. Was it good. She was quick, efficient, and friendly. I told her "I'll be your easiest customer you will ever meet...." She said "I already like you". I ordered the "Trips to Win", which is 3 biscuits, 3 sausages, 3 eggs (any style) and huge bowl of sausage gravy. Get the "trips" play in the title?? Yah, I didn't at first (mom brain!). The 2 plates of food was $5.50 and a good deal for a ton of food. It all tasted fine. I also ordered a side of fried mushrooms with ranch for $3 and that too tasted fine. Next up is the chicken and chips for $7.50. It was 5 good size tenders and a full plate of fries. It was your typical fired chicken tenders and some good crispy fries. Both served hot so we were good there. Lastly, what I thought, or had built up in my mind to be the star of the - what I've been craving to order from here for quite some time was the "Free for All" special. It's any speciality hot dog from their long list of dogs, a HUGE bowl of chili, either with or without beans, a plate of fries and a 20oz drink (yes- they have Coke products!) with free refills- all this for only $7.75. I'm not gona lie- it was a LOT of food for very little coin. But again, it was all just ...ok. The chili was odd. I got it with beans and was happy I did because between the real beans, real chopped onions and the packaged oyster crackers at least I knew what 3 of the ingredients were in my bowl. It was weird chili to say the least. Let's put it this way, my preteen is a human garbage disposal- he eats any and everything. He took one bite and nonchalantly slid it back across the table to me while I was distracted. My Chicago dog should have been taken out back and buried, never to been seen or spoken of again! It was a crying shame to have even called it a Chicago dog. I want to personally call Chicago and apologize. It was that bad. There was nothing "ok" or "fine" about that dog! The fries that came with my meal were again good. Ok- I'm just Gona said it like it is. The fries were great. Hot and crispy. My waitress Dana was a doll- loved her! The Coke was cold, quenched my thirst and washed down all the sadness that was the rest of the food. My kids kept complaining about the smell of the place, and one actually kept trying to secretly plug her nose. And while the bus boy kept busy cleaning something or other, the place was just had that, well...not so clean feeling. I can see this coney as a place people come, after the bars have closed, to eat greasy food to soak up the liquor and sober up. 20 years ago I might have even been one of those people and gave it a better rating. Phoenix is a modest & unpretentious Coney Island that actually makes Detroit style Coney Island food in the classic, orthodox fashion. The dog was a 1/4 all-beef dog, smothered with cheese, good chili, onions, and even bacon. I love how they just lay it all on the dog, nice and messy, forcing you to eat it with a knife and fork! The bun was steamed. The fries were awesome like fries from a carnival/fair. I had a Detroit Coney Dog which is a more basic wiener, with the chili, mustard and onions. We also got a side of fried mushrooms. I smothered my dog in Frank's Red Hot Sauce - and the fried mushrooms were delectable dipped in ranch! Don't expect fancy decor or any remotely recent renovation. This is an authentic, modest Detroit Coney Island where hard-workin' and hard-eatin' metro-Detroiters go to. You won't find me at National's Coney Island again, ever (unless it's because I have to follow a pack of friends). Which i do not recommend eating. It is a cancer causing material when heated and absorbed. Manufacturers create a polystyrene foam which does not melt when hot meals or hot liquids are added. More than just a typical Coney Island. Service was not bad but I feel like the food is very good here. The kitchen area is right in the middle of the restaurant and its wide open for everyone to see what is going on. I ordered the Geno special. Basically a typical chicken strip gyro. But the difference here is everything is chopped up and tossed in there mayo than placed in the pits with cheese. It's really good! Also ordered chili cheese fries. These are pretty good as well.
