This is a huge bookstore, with front side of it mainly has gift items and accessories. Middle and back side of the store have all kinds of books, including children's books, greeting cards, toys and board games. Each book section was clearly marked with its category. The store is very clean and tidy. There were plenty of staff in the store keeping things in place, helping customers with questions and also do the checkouts. We bought some greeting cards, stickers and a kid's story book from the store. Prices were decent for all the items. The checkout process was quick and easy. read more

Cute local bookstore in Burlington downtown. In the front is regular book sections. Mid and back sections are mostly kids, stationary, toys and cards. The staff were very friendly. I asked some questions regarding a certain merchandise but they didn't have. Readable pricing at the area. They do have state tax and city tax. I got a fun birthday card from the store. I highly recommend Phoenix Books, at this, their Burlington location. (I've separately reviewed their Essex Junction location, for what it's worth, which I also recommend.) Whoever is doing their acquisitions really knows books, and has an eye for authors that might not be so well known or widely popular but who are worthy of a thoughtful reader's attention (e.g. Percival Everett). They seem to be known for the staff recommendations taped to the shelf edges, and the reputation is well deserved. They also stock a large number of cards for all occasions, including some very attractive ones from locals. Note that they have sale items shelved in the basement area. read more

Went here with my parents as part of our Vermont Vacation on Sunday August 27th 2023. This was our first stop after parking in the Church marketplace. The bookstore has an amazing selection and setup. There was many books located in the shop from childrens, to history, to romance, to young adults, to horror. found a few history books that seemed interesting and horror books, but settled with The Sun and The Sky, which is a continuation of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the olympanian series (plus hero of olympus). Immediately purchased the book, paid with cash, and went on my merry way. Hope to read the book in its entirety soon! Cashier was very nice. Not sure if we will ever be back in Vermont, but this is definetely a must stop! read more

Been here a few times and I always leave wanting to get more books than I can read because they have a great selection of new reads up front, great non-fiction up stairs, some Vermont specific books, and my kids always find something in their big kids section. Staff is super friendly and put out a good vibe that's welcoming and feels like a community even I only make it there a couple times a summer. read more

Cute little bookshop with a nice layout! I think my favorite thing about this place has to be a toss up between the fact that they sell fountain pens and ink, or the fact that they have little note cards in front of their books giving a brief description of the book along with the recommending employees opinion of it. It's just such a nice touch and something I haven't seen before that I wish was more frequent in bookstores. read more

We always pick small business over mega corporate run businesses. We stumbled upon this charming store in the quaint shopping district in downtown Burlington. We were looking for souvenirs for the kids to bring back from our holiday. The man running the store was very helpful and didn't hesitate to steer us in the right direction toward a store that carries some of the kitchy stuff they didn't have. We bought some stickers and some organic Vermont mints and went along our way. The store itself has a fantastic selection of books, activity books such as adult coloring books and calendars. Excellent collection of current and topically relevant books, great SFF section, great staff. Book displays and little cards taped on the shelves noting book recommendations are thoughtfully created, and I've found them to be great ways to find new reads. This bookstore is proof you don't need to go off the beaten path to find treasure. They have a unique collection of old and new, work and pleasure, fact and fiction, as well as an incredibly knowledgeable staff to help you find exactly what you are looking for. I was on a quest for the perfect gift for a 3 year old when I happened to stop in the Burlington location. I didn't know precisely what I was looking for, but as luck would have it, they did. After a totally engaging conversation with a member of the staff about how I ended up there, she pulled out a few options of children's books and totally nailed it. I got all three. They not only appealed to what she had gathered about me in that short conversation, but also to the little kid I had told her about. I absolutely love going in there to peruse their most recent offerings or to find more 'perfect gifts'. Not to mention that I feel great about buying books from a locally owned business. I visited the Phoenix Books in Rutland, VT after Thanksgiving and had such a great experience. I loved the feeling of the store and the selection was carefully chosen and really good. This is the place to go when you are looking for an obscure book that you found on Amazon, but is not stocked by Barnes and Nobles. I have always found the staff to be very customer focused, without seeming pushy. One of our favorite bookshops. Phoenix has always been well curated and browsing here is always pleasant. It's hard to get out with just one book per person. Great staff. The mark down this year comes because they seemed to have change layout a bit and some of the stock that used to really grab us has been mixed fully in the other bookshelves - not a bad thing, just not quite a easy to hit a certain publisher as easily.
