Got bad vibes for the place as soon as I walked as it was super cold inside and no one seemed to care? Like turn your heater on its 9 am in the morning. Me and my wife ordered the chicken and steak pho. Came out pretty fast. I smelled it (something I normally do because I'm a pho snob) and it checked out. I added all my sauces and took my first sip. It just tasted like lukewarm water? Like barely even seasoned? I tried my wife's to the same affect. Tried adding more sauces and it didn't fix the problem. Worst pho I ever had. I got the pho dac biet. It was very tasteless even after adding nuoc mam, Siracha and hoisin sauce to the broth. I gave it two stars because we did order the salted fried chicken wings and that was really good. BUT the place was called PHO xe lua, and that should be their best thing on the menu. There are a few good pho places in Sac. In my opinion, this place is probably the second best in town. I have not explored too many menu items other than the pho and noodle selections. You will get cheap, delicious Asian food at a typical Asian restaurant with standard Asian service. I don't know what more you need because you can't get good pho in a clean establishment like this everywhere. I don't remember what number pho this is but I get it in small. It has most of the meats with rare steak and no meatballs. I pick out the tripe because it feels funny in my mouth. Add all the side vegetables they give you in your soup and create a mixture of hoisin sauce and sriracha (add to your tongue's discretion) to dip your various meats in. I also order the shrimp spring rolls and appetizer sampler. A small bowl of their oversized pho is more than enough for a person like me but I love the food here so I like to get greedy and eat the leftovers at home. The owner has a sense of humor too. This is a cool place, the name of the restaurant means Pho Train. I don't know why I have not found this place sooner. It's a nice large restaurant, it has more seating located in the rear, and plenty of private lot parking. When you walk in you're going to be greeted by a large open restaurant. It's pretty casual here, just wait for the host to seat you and they'll be back pretty soon after for drinks. The menu is a bit big though, I usually have to ask the waiter to come back in a little because there are many options. My favorite dish is the Shaking Beef dish, which consist of very soft tender chunks of beef, cooked with onions, green bell peppers, vegetables and topped with red rice, the red I asked is some ketchup mixed into the rice to give it a color and a lil bit of flavor, you don't really taste the ketchup if you're concerned. The portions are enormous, I could not finish my meal without having 1/4 to take home, it's probably enough to feed you and share a little of it with a child. The place looks clean, and it's got many larger tables which would be a great place to take families like when there's 6 or more. I think this place has the most authentic Shaking Beef, the beef is soft and tasty, better than some other places I've tried, whenever I am in the mood for beef I know where I'm going! read more

I only came here because I was in the area after snowboarding in Tahoe, and I was sick, so what better to eat than a pho place when you're sick lol. Right when we went in, the decor was mehhh, just tables and chairs. It's what you would expect from a simple restaurant but their front lobby area is interesting. It has a design like the Asian temples, but it was also falling off the walls. You have to see it to believe it. We were seated right away as it's a pretty big (long) restaurant with a ton of seating. I was happy that we were seated by a TV that had the football game on so it was some entertainment. The good thing about this place is that it seems a little more sanitary than what you may think. Their chopsticks and spoons come individual wrapped in paper for you. The one downside is our table didn't have the little sauce dishes that we had to ask for. I personally got a vermicelli plate while my friend got a pho dish. I choose the beef option with egg rolls for my vermicelli. When it came out, it came out as a dish, as opposed to how you would normally get it, in a bowl. The beef was okay, though I wish I got pork instead. The egg rolls are small, almost like lumpia sized but it wasn't bad. The rest is the same, veggies and the noodles. My friend really liked her pho, but then again she was really hungry. I gave this place 4 stars because it's big and you will get seated quickly and the service wasn't too bad, but then again, I'm Asian and was able to speak to them for the most part. One of the better pho places in the area. As a student at UC Davis, it sucks that the only pho place in Davis is pho king which really isn't that spectacular. The broth for standard pho is good with fresh meat that is standard. The menu is also fairly standard and gives you the same options your average pho shop will provide. I love getting the pho on a cold or rainy day as that hot broth warms you up sooo much. Their spring rolls and vermicelli are also quite good. Whenever I order vermicelli, I tend to get pork for fear of the chicken being dry. The environment when you enter isn't anything fancy, but its all you need. Just comfortable chairs and good sized tables that you can enjoy good food with lots of friends. In addition, they have a gorgeous life-sized golden water buffalo that you can take pictures with!! So I live in the area and know a few places that I really like. For instance, Pho Saigon across the street has been a stable for me. I've never really cared to venture out because Saigon has been really consistent, and one particular lady that works there really cracks me up (if you've been there, then you would know who). But being from the neighborhood, and have driven by Pho Xe Lua dozens of time, I've always been curious as to what the place was about. If you are familiar with the area, then you know it's not the prettiest of neighborhoods, and sometimes you would question what's really behind the storefront. I finally looked up Xe Lua on Yelp and it actually looked really nice from the pictures and decided to cheat on Saigon for once. Here are some of my impressions: I ordered Pho as I normally would and everything was very fresh. I noticed that the soup base was a little lighter than Saigon, but lighter was good. Meat-wise, I think they were a little bit stingy, but the price they charge for an XL was fair. So overall, the Pho was taste pretty good. The restaurant was clean and pleasant. Everything was new and freshly painted. So I rather enjoyed the atmosphere. Watching the large Plasma TV was nice too. But now for the disturbing part. As a person, I tend to be a rather observant type. I usually notice the little unusual things around me that no one seems to notice. One of the ladies was cleaning up the table. I started watching her pour the left over food into the trash bin on the cart. She worked pretty fast, pouring out the soup from the Pho bowl, scraping away the food from the plate. But then I noticed that she didn't trash the plate containing the bean sprouts. She removed the squeezed lime and the basil stems from the plate and put the sprout on the bottom container of the cart. Why didn't she trash it? Is this common practice here? It was 3 cent worth of sprouts, but they had to save it? Where would it go after that? In my soup? Not to say that other places don't do similar things, but I saw this after I finished eating, and it just kinda made me sick. If it wasn't for that I would probably go back. read more

You get lettuce, rice noodle that is slightly fried, pickled veg., pork and dried egg roll skins and bowl of hot water (to soften the egg roll skins). Disappointed Let it be known that place serves a variety of Asian cuisines and is definitely not Vietnamese. I was impressed by the size of the joint upon entering. After being seated, I tried to order seafood phô with clear noodles and was told the cellophane noodles would be "too hard". Didn't know if my server meant texture or degree of difficulty so I settled for rice noodles. She also said, "You get large." A statement, not a question but something I'd come to regret. The HUGE, (think a bowl you'd serve a family popcorn to pass around), arrived and it smelled great. I immediately noticed the Chinese influence when I spied the baby bok choy, tiny corn on the cob, crinkle cut carrots and mushrooms. To their credit, the chicken broth actually tasted like chicken rather than salt. The seafood was good, tasted fresh. The condiments plate was WAY to small for a dude staring at a gallon of soup and there was only Chinese style red chili in oil available to spice up my bowl (no Sambal Oelek). I would have asked for some more fresh jalepeños and basil had Miss You Get Large popped by to check on me- but she didn't. Oh well, I only managed to finish half my bowl.
