What we found instead was a restaurant apparently operating under the assumption that customers were a rumor. We waited. And waited. Somewhere in the back, a young woman was cooking, which initially seemed promising. After all, the presence of an actual human being preparing food is usually a positive indicator that a restaurant is open for business. But then she disappeared into the back, never to be seen again. No greeting. No acknowledgment. No reassuring eye contact. Nothing. For all we knew, she had escaped through a tunnel to a neighboring Panda Express. At one point, I considered shouting, "Is there anyone here?" but feared I might disturb whatever important government experiment was taking place in the kitchen. As the minutes stretched on, I began to suspect the problem was geopolitical. Perhaps an escalating diplomatic crisis with China had brought the Port of Los Angeles to a standstill, leaving thousands of containers of General Tso's chicken stranded offshore. Maybe negotiations had collapsed over a disputed shipment of crab rangoon. Perhaps the young woman in the kitchen had been summoned to Beijing for emergency trade talks.
